Topic 1: School/ University Thing about the following topic. In your mind, you should have a general outline of this topic; you should know clearly how to begin your statement, how to talk it at length, and how to end it. In this way, your statement will be logical and clear. Look at the following outline, and make your own statement according to the outline. Topic: School or University Describe your school or university You should say: Where it is or was When you study or studied there What you remember about it And explain why you remember it more than other schools. INSTRUCTIONS Please read the topic carefully, you will be asked to talk about it for 1 to 2 minutes. you have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish. Outline To begin the statement Which school or university are you going to describe? Ok, what I'd like to describe is my former middle school, which is located in Wuhan. ) I am in university now, and I have experienced

primary school, junior middle school and high school. Among them, what I liked best was primary school. Comparatively, I like the life in university much better. To develop your statement 1. When did you go to this school or university? It was about seven or eight years ago when I was about eleven years old so I am not sure if I can describe everything exactly. I have been in this university for two years, and now I like this university very much. I was only a young kid when I went to this primary school. 2. Where it is located? My university is located beside a quite busy street, and it is very convenient to go shopping, It was located in the center of the city. The school was just beside the main street, and you could hear the noise from the street on the campus. 3. What are the buildings on campus? Describe them generally. The teaching building was fairly large. And the entrance was typically wide with some pictures of important/figures in history. The two buildings were connected together as a letter "L". In front of the teaching buildings was a very small playground. It took only two or three minutes to walk through it, because its length was only 50 meters.

4. What do or did you usually do in the school or universities? When the bell rang, hundreds of children rushed into the playground, playing various games, such as rope skipping or kicking shuttlecock. For we boys at that age, playing chess was our favorite game. I usually played together with my friends on the playground, where we played basketball, table-tennis, and other sports and games, and at that time, we did not have much interest in studying. 5. How did you study in that school or university? Did you like your teachers? We always have classes in a very big classroom, which can contain more than two hundred students. The information from the teacher lecturing is so much that most of us have to read more books in order to understand it better. We had 80 students in a classroom, and it was even very noisy when we had class. The teachers were extremely strict with us, and they often talked that if we worked hard right now, we would have bright future one day. 6. What were special features of it that leaves the deep impression on you? I enjoyed the free atmosphere there, because we did not need to face the severe competition there, and our work was just playing and being happy. However, I still like the life here, because it is a life of my own. I can deal with everything by myself.

I remember this school more than other places because the teachers and the classmates were so friendly to me, and offered me much help from many aspects. It was my second home for me To end the statement What is your general impression of school or university? It was the time of happiness in my memory. In this way, I think that the life in primary school is the one I liked best, and the school is the happiest place I had ever enjoyed. I think the life in university will be an important stage during my whole life. Imitation: Follow the outline above and make a speech of your own. Make sure that you have answered all the questions that are required on the card. Suggested answers to the topic Example 1 OK, what I'd like to describe is my former middle school, which is located in Wuhan. It was about seven or eight years ago when I was about eleven years old so I am not sure if I can describe everything exactly. It has a big campus with a quite big gate separating the campus from the street and the little shops across the street. The gate was opened and closed at regular times, and when we got into the campus, the gate was always closed because we are not allowed to go outside the school till the time we had all the classes. The teaching building was fairly large. And the entrance was typically wide with some pictures of important

figures in history. It was from those pictures that I knew Einstein and George Washington, and other famous figures and from the passages below, I knew something about what they did and why they were famous all over the world. The playground was the place we liked most during that time. We played basketball, table tennis, and other sports and games. I remember this school more than other places because the teachers and the classmates were 50 friendly to me, and offered me much help from many aspects. It was my second home for me. It was in this school I began to know something, such as the importance of knowledge and why I should come to school. I was not a naive child anymore. I felt I grew up at that time. I worked ^d in order to be one of the best students in the class. In order to be the Number One in the area of history, I read history books from day to night, and at last, I was called the expert of history. I formed most of my characteristics then. Right now, I miss the life in my former n^j school a lot, because it was the time I did not have any pressure from society, and I was naive j that time but wanted to pretend to be an adult with sophisticated thoughts. It was the time J happiness in my memory.
