Faith United Methodist Church 1616 Blue Avenue Zanesville, Ohio July 2016 Faith In Action PASTOR JOY S NOTES Dear Friends, A few weeks ago, our District held an event for clergy about keeping Sabbath rest. Perhaps you are like some of my friends who tease me that I only work two hours a week! But the reality is that many clergy struggle to find Sabbath time. By Sabbath time, we do not mean free time or time to catch up on our to do list. Sabbath is time set aside for being with God and feeding ones soul. Eugene Peterson (writer of The Message) says, Sabbath is that uncluttered time and space in which we can distance ourselves from our own activities enough to see what God is doing. Some days, life comes at us fast. When it doesn t, many of us keep ourselves moving at a quick pace anyway, filling free time with hobbies or sports and the noise of radio or TV, making it more than a little challenging to hear anything God might be trying to communicate. We need to regularly hit the pause button on our lives: to take quiet time away from the rush of daily living and our to do lists, and focus on being with and even listening to God. When we don t do this, we can lose track of where God is and what God is doing. As Wayne Muller says, Like a path through the forest, Sabbath creates a marker for ourselves so, if we are lost, we can find our way back to our center. When God is not kept at the center of our live, everything begins to get out of balance. We can lose track of what is truly important and struggle to find where God is leading. Many take comfort in the words of Jesus: Come to me all who are weary and carrying a heavy load, and I will give you rest. It is easy to listen to the news or hear the struggles of our family and friends and become INSIDE THIS ISSUE Servant Schedule... 2 Thank You... 2 Summer Flyer... 3 Missions... 4 UMW Picnic Info... 4 Web-site... 5 UM Women....5 July Calendar...6 Christmas in July.. 7 Prayer List...8 Funeral Dinners...8 Trustees...9

CHRISTMAS IN JULY Once again, the New Hope Circle is sponsoring Christmas in July at Faith United Methodist Church. Every year the congregation has been very generous with collecting coins and loose change for our small Christmas boxes. We hope you will be cheerful givers* again this year. The money raised will go to the Salvation Army Christmas food baskets. As we did last year, we will be giving the money collected directly to the Salvation Army (instead of buying the food ourselves). The Salvation Army has the ability to purchase the most needed food from the Food Bank. This is more cost effective in terms of purchasing at a price that will serve more families in need. So start saving your coins! Thank you in advance for helping with this UMW mission project. *If you would like this donation to be reflected on your Giving Statement, please sign the label on your little box. Didn t get a little box? See a member of the New Hope Circle. CHICKEN DINNER Thea Crawmer has tickets for the Zanesville Concert Band fund raiser. Zanesville High School Athletic Boosters will be cooking a Chicken Dinner at the fairgrounds on July 24 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Cost: $9.00 each 7

At times, it is enough to merely bare our own life challenges. We need one who can help us with that load and we need to take that solace regularly. In place of our exhaustion and spiritual fatigue, [God] will give us rest. All [God] asks is that we come and spend a while thinking about Him, meditating on Him, talking to Him, listening in silence, occupying ourselves with Him totally and thoroughly lost in the hiding place of His presence. (Chuck Swindoll) We find ourselves in mid-summer, a season that is supposed to be a little less tedious with a less stressful rhythm that that of fall or spring. Are you taking the much needed time away? Not just mental health time, but time to nourish your soul through the presence of the Holy Spirit? Perhaps you would be interested in joining me in August for a four-week class about the Sabbath and being intentional about spending that time with God? We would consider the same material our District utilized, 24/6: A Prescription for a Healthier, Happier Life, by Matthew Sleeth. I ve not finalized dates and time for the class and would be interested in knowing if you are interested in attending. Until then, please join me in contemplating what is Sabbath time or soul nurturing for you and when you make that time in your schedule. It s so good to be home and to know this is home for another year! I hope to see you Sunday! Yours in Christ, Joy God loves each of us as if there were only one of us. Saint Augustine FUNERAL DINNER MINISTRY Would you be willing to volunteer your time and cooking talents for funeral dinners if the need arises? For more information contact Barb Tignor or Marsha Kelly!

NOTE FROM THE TRUSTEES The trustees have been looking into having the parking lots patched, cracks filled in, and lots resurfaced with the goal of having them taken care of this spring or summer. We have been taking bids and they are over $10,000 higher than previous estimates. Neff Paving: 3 Lot Total Range $14,761 - $21,663.12 Williams Paving Inc.: 3 Lot Total Range $19,915 - $59,935 Main Parking Lot Option 1 $49,550.00 Mill existing asphalt, clean & prep for new asphalt, apply tack coat, install & compact 2 inches of #448-1 asphalt top coat, and layout & strip parking lines Option 2 $ 9,530.00 Clean & fill cracks ½ wide or larger with hot applied rubberized crack filler, clean surface, apply 2 coats of asphalt sealer, & restripe existing parking lines. The lowest bid is $14,761 and the highest is $59.935. Current balance in the parking lot fund is $5,130 as of 4/19/16. With this in mind, the trustees have decided to patch the parking lot the best we can and hold off on resurfacing for at least another year. We will continue to search for lower bids. A copy of the proposals will be posted on the bulletin board. Prayer: Thank you, O God, for the Marthas and Marys of the world. Thank you for blessing me with strengths and abilities that are uniquely mine. May they be used for your glory. Amen 9
