PASTORAL LETTER Beyond Tracting! Dear BPCWAians, This September, we will begin a new program Beyond Tracting. You will notice a change in this program from what you are used to in September 30in30. This Pastoral letter will explain the reason, what it is not and what it is intended to be, and the activities involved in this program. Reason for Beyond Tracting. Acts 8:35 reminds us, Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Philip pursued after and personally explained the Gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch. Philip asked him questions and answered the Ethiopian s questions too. And Philip sat down with him and introduced the Lord Jesus to him. Through this personal and intentional pursuit and sharing of the Gospel to the Ethiopian, the latter came to understand the Gospel and was saved. Philip went beyond just giving him something to read. He personally sat down with and made the effort to explain the Gospel and answer questions about it. This is the aim of Beyond Tracting to build intentional, focused, and targeted personal evangelism. While there are changes in the activities, the objective and aim of Beyond Tracting is the same as September 30in30. The reason the church continues to have a program every September has always been to provide a reminder and to help each of you develop a habit of evangelism by supporting and encouraging you through various means. September 30in30 has helped introduce many to making the effort to give out tracts and evangelise on your own. Having done September 30in30 for many years, it is time to challenge ourselves further in evangelism to fulfil the great commission given to each believer. The experience of giving out tracts and speaking to strangers will continue to be reinforced by the regular street evangelism. What we wish to help and encourage you to develop further is targeted personal evangelism on a regular basis in your own life. While the street evangelism experience should continue to remind us to reach out to many people by giving out tracts on a regular basis in our 1

daily walk, we hope that Beyond Tracting will encourage us to an evangelism approach that is more than merely giving out tracts and speaking a few words. To promote the habit of personal evangelism, Beyond Tracting will help us to be more focussed by taking the time to sit down with someone to share the Gospel. Hence, we are moving to Beyond Tracting to promote such a habit. What Beyond Tracting is not and what it is. Beyond Tracting is (1) not merely about meeting a set number of tracts and having fulfilled targets. It is a commitment that you make to your Lord because we want you to use this program to help you learn and begin to continue to make personal evangelism a habit in your own life. You can do more, or do less, but it is your honest best that you know God knows. It is not about reporting back a set of numbers to someone. Having said that, it is (2) not an excuse therefore to reduce giving out tracts. It should not give us the impression that we should then forget about giving out as many tracts as we have opportunities to do so in our daily life. Beyond Tracting, just like September 30in30, is not about a September activity only. Beyond Tracting is (3) not to replace, but to encourage, your regular personal evangelism every month of the year. Beyond Tracting is certainly not meant to ease your conscience that you have done your quota for the year by fulfilling a church program in September. Instead, Beyond Tracting is (1) to help you build the experience of personal outreach with the encouragement and support of others in the church. Beyond Tracting (2) is about personal and one to one premeditated sharing of the Gospel of Christ to someone in your life. Thereafter, from January to December, you should continue to do personal outreach through the experience gained in Beyond Tracting. This program is (3) to serve as a reminder to start a lifestyle of personal and one to one evangelism. The church can only organise this reminder to you with this program and use it to help you overcome any inertia and rekindle personal evangelism. The rest is up to you every other month of the rest of the year. Activities in Beyond Tracting. A Gospel pack will be given to you when you register. The reason why we encourage you to register is to drive you to make the commitment to start doing something about personal evangelism. We acknowledge that registering does 2

not mean a person will surely make the effort or if a person does not register he will not do anything. But if you intend to do personal outreach and wish to learn to do so with others, why not register? Moreover, the registration enables us to form the support and encouragement groups to help you and in turn you can help encourage another. We cannot do this without you registering. The Gospel pack will contain 7 tracts, not 30. You will use these 7 tracts with very focused efforts by identifying who you intend to share the gospel with. As mentioned earlier, it is not about fulfilling numbers. One may feel 7 is too many, another may feel it is too few. It is between you and your Lord. You will then share with your assigned partner or group what to pray for and when you intend to try to speak with the person. This prayer support will encourage each other and gain help from the Lord. You can also submit any sharing and testimony to give glory to God and to encourage others to go forth too. Your testimonies will be anonymous. We suggest that you consider 3 groups of people to reach (1) friends, (2) family / relatives, and (3) less familiar acquaintances / strangers. Some means of meeting up can be to invite them out for coffee, some family events, or some activities especially in church. After sharing the Gospel, do not miss out on inviting them to church. You should definitely also invite them to our regular Gospel meetings at Christmas, Easter, and even the Students Outreach Day Gospel meeting. You can let them know that you will call them again as the time gets closer. To do all these, you will need to really prepare well. Of course, this means that you must really know the Gospel and the key points. But every one of us must know the Gospel of salvation clearly. This is where this program is Beyond Tracting. This is where each of us are now pushed to go beyond our comfort zone to go beyond handing out tracts and quickly moving on. Beyond Tracting is to help us now move on to truly fulfilling the great commission, not just easing our conscience. BPCWAians, let us send out the Gospel light to those around us. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise (Prov 11:30). Yours in our Lord s service Pastor 3

Nursing Home Ministry Briefing (Next Sunday, 26 August, 1:30 pm): Those who go to the Nursing Homes are requested to attend a briefing at the upper fellowship hall. 5. Adelphe Bible Study (Next Sunday, 26 August, 3:30 pm): This Bible study will continue looking at the permissive will of God and discuss questions such as Does the Permissive will contradict God s covenantal promises? and What are the benefits of understanding that there is this aspect of God s will?. English Basic Bible Knowledge Class (Next Sunday, 26 August, 9:00 am): A new cycle of the English Basic Bible Knowledge Class conducted by Pastor will begin in the main sanctuary. Full attendance at the BBK classes are required for worshippers who are considering baptism, affirmation or transfer of membership. All who would like to know more and be grounded in the Christian faith are also welcome to attend. 4

7. Change of Venue for English and Chinese Basic Bible Knowledge Classes (Next Sunday, 26 August, 9:00 am): The English BBK classes will be conducted in the main sanctuary downstairs and the Chinese BBK classes will be in the sanctuary upstairs. 8. Beyond Tracting (Next Sunday, 26 August): This September, we want to go Beyond Tracting. There are friends and family members that you have been meaning to catch up with to share the Gospel or even strangers that you have given a tract to before. As part of encouraging personal evangelism as a daily lifestyle, please register next week to go Beyond Tracting and towards more intentional evangelism. Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 9. Church Combined Fellowship (Next Friday, 31 August, 7:30 pm): The topic is on the Biblical Separation Good or Bad?. Biblical Separation is one of the key doctrines highlighted in our church s Constitution. What is Biblical Separation? Is this an unloving and divisive doctrine? Did not God command unity instead? Why is it in our Constitution? What is its purpose? Come and learn and ask questions regarding this critical and often misunderstood subject. 10. Thanksgiving and Prayer Items: Thank God for united hearts at the Session Meeting yesterday, and for God s guidance over the affairs of His church. Thank God for the freedom to be able to worship our Lord and to share our faith with those around us. Pray for the message at the upcoming Church Combined Fellowship to help establish worshippers in His Truth so we can be a holy witness for Him. Pray for every worshipper to be filled with love towards our Saviour and to always be ready to testify and speak of Him to one another and to those outside of the faith. Pray for the preparations for the upcoming Annual Congregational Meeting and the compilation of the reports to bring glory to His Name. 5
