Series: Lord s Supper Title: The Lord s Supper Text: (1 Cor 11) I. It is the Lord s Church: He decides what it is. (Matt 16:18) It is the Lord s Church. Jesus actually used the word Ekklesia. That is the exact term Jesus spoke. EKKLESIA~a company of people called out to a specific place for a specific purpose. It has its roots in the democracies if the ancient Greek citystates where town criers would call the citizens to a meeting in order to conduct the city s business. 114 times the Word EKKLESIA is translated Church. Jesus did not change the Meaning of the Greek word. Jesus just distinguished if from all other assemblies of the day by by using the personal Pronoun MY. (Matt 16:18) The NT Church is the Lord s Assembly. The church was known by its location such as in 1 Cor 1:2 "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth," Colossians 4:16 " the church of the Laodiceans;..."; 1 Thessalonians 1:1 " the church of the Thessalonians "; (Rev 2&3) 7 literal letters to 7 literal churches, in 7 literal locations. It is a Local visible assembly of God s people. It is the Lord s Church: He decides what it is. You are not Born into the Church. A Child of God, is in the Family of God, with the Kingdom of God with in them, and NOT be in the Church of God until Baptism. (Acts 2:21,47) Where He gets Glory Eph 3:21 Is what Christ gave himself for it Eph 5:25 Is a glorious thing; Eph 5:27; Is a Holy thing; Eph 5:27 It Brings Him Glory by Fulfilling His Purpose: (Eph 4:11-19) It Bring Him Glory by Fulfilling Great Commission: (Matt 28:19-20) We Bring Him Glory by being a multiplying Disciple! (2 Tim 2:2) The Church of God is the Local, Visible, Called Out Assembly of Baptized Believers who have covenanted together to carry out the Great Commission. II. It is the Lord s Church: He decides How it operates. (1 Cor 11) Paul was used by the Lord to plant this NT church. Paul taught them what Jesus had taught him 3yrs in the desert. Paul reminds them of the example he set for them. (Vs1) Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. To say this, you better know you are right! My Hope: Encourage others to walk like Christ b/c I am.

I mention this b/c each of us is an example to someone, It is the Lord s Church: He decides How it operates. (Vs 2) Christ Jesus gave His Church 2 Ordinances: Baptism and the Lord s Supper. Both were given to the Church, not to Christians as individuals. Both were given to the Church for the purpose of protection. Baptism keeps the church pure from without. Lord s Supper keeps the church pure from within. III. It is the Lord s Church: thus it is the Lord s Supper: (vs 2) The Ordinances are not Subject to our Modification. They are not open to for us to Tweak to fit our preferences. Many people are shocked to find out that their level of sincerity has no bearing on this. No one s heart is as pure as Jesus is. No one s motives are as pure as Jesus is. But Jesus walked 60miles to get the right Baptism, from the only person who had God s Authority to do so. The Ordinances of the Church of Jesus Christ are not Subject to our Modification. 1 st Corinthians is a book of Rebuke. The Corinthians had been keeping the ordinances, but not as He had delivered them unto her. Paul Rebukes them for being Carnal. Paul Rebukes them for Divisions & Needless strife. Paul Rebukes them for the sin and Incest among them. Paul Rebukes them in ch 12-14 misapplication of the work of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. Paul Rebukes them in ch 15 b/c they are not practicing & teaching the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Chap 11 Paul Rebukes them for their desecration & method of observing the Lord s Supper. The Lord s Supper is not be taken lightly. (1 Cor 11:20-22) They said they were coming together for the Lord s Supper, but because of the way they were doing it, it ceased to be the Lord s Supper. (1 Corinthians 11:20-22) When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. (A.) It s the Lord s Supper, He determines WHEN it is observed: It was instituted at the time of Passover: (Matt 26:17) (Matt 26:17-19) 1 st day of the week long observance. First day of the Feast, Not the 1 st day of the week.

While observing the Passover Feast, Christ institutes the Lord s Supper. (1 Cor 5:7-8) 3 days, 3 nights does not = Friday (Matthew 12:40) For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Gen 1:5,8,13,19,23,31) Measured their Days. (Duet 21:22-23; Josh 10:26-27) Taken down by the evening. Tues Evening, Crucified Wed, buried before Dusk/6pm Its called The Lord s Supper: (1Cor 11:20) Supper Profound theological thought. It is the Lords Supper, not breakfast, lunch, or dinner. He could have called it anything He wanted. Supper is the Evening meal. (Matt 26:20-21) (Ex 12:6) It was killed and observed in the Evening! (1 Cor 5:7-8) Just as Jesus was our Passover lamb, the Lord s Supper has become the Church s Passover feast. It s the Lord s Supper: He determines When it is Observed (B.) It s the Lord s Supper, He determines HOW it is observed: 1. (Matt 26:26) Unlevened Bread = Sinless Explain Leaven. Explain: the Bread represents His Sinlessness: (2 Cor 5:21) Explain Broken = persecuted and slain body of Christ. Jesus Christ, proclaims Himself as the True Bread. (Jn 6:31,33,35,41,48, 51) Manna pictured Christ. Bread sustains life, He is the Bread of Life! He is the True Passover Lamb, He is the True Bread 2. (Matt 26:27 ) Cup Speaks of His Death- Illus: Sons of Zebedee have a request. (Matt 20:21) What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. (Matt 20:22) But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. (Matt 20:23) And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: What s in the cup: (Matt 20:27-28) Symbolizes His Blood. (Heb 9:22) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; & without shedding of blood is no remission. (Matt 20:29) Fruit of the Vine: The Blood Speaks of Life: (Lev17:11) For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Alcoholic Wine? Fermentation is a rotting process. (Prov 23:29-32; Is 28:7) Condemns liquor, Why would He then use it as a symbol of His uncorrupted Blood

(C.) It s the Lord s Supper, He determines WHY it is Observed: (Luke 22:19) And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. (1.) It is a Memorial, not a means of Grace: Just as the Passover was a Remembrance feast or memorial, So likewise the Lord s Supper was to be in remembrance of His Sacrifice for us. Give the Gospel Has the Blood been applied to you? The 10 th Plague, The Blood had to be applied. When we come to the Lord s Supper, we are not to just come in and lightly partake of it and go home. We are to remember the great sacrifice so freely given when it should have been us! It was our fault that the sacrifice was made! It s not church membership that saves you! Or Baptism, or Tithing, or reading, it was Jesus and His Shed Blood only! We are remembering the Price of deliverance, but we are also remembering the Method of our deliverance. He was denied by his friends and deserted. Unjustly accused, lied about, and tried with out a cause. Beaten with his head covered until Visage was Marred unrecognizable! He had the beard ripped from his face. He was whipped with a cat of 9 tails. Each strap had a lead weight, or broken glass or metal hook! He had Thorns pressed into his brow. Beated with Rods. Spit on, and Mocked. Carried His cross up the Via Delarosa, The way of Suffering He was Nailed to a cross. He Was Mocked by those who hung next to him. Fed vinegar, and died. Laid in a borrowed tomb. (1 Pet 1:18-19) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as SILVER AND GOLD, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Many times and in many places people partake of the Lord s Supper, but never once does their mind go back to Calvary! ITS JUST A RITUAL! We find that this beautiful memorial becomes accursed to men if they eat it unworthily. (1 Cor 11: 29) For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. We do not want to enter in haphazardly or nonchalantly! We are to remember The Method of our Deliverance, His Cross. The Price of our Deliverance, His Blood The Victory of our Deliverance, His Resurrection,

Oh death where is thy Sting! Oh Grave where is thy Victory! Have you ever thought of all that when talking the Lord s Supper? This is the Most precious observance all year! (2.) It is a Time Of Cleansing! 1Cor 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. At Passover, they were to take all the Leaven out of their houses! Leaven is a type or Picture of Sin! At the 10 th plague they were to do this. When they observed yearly, they were to repeat this. Maybe they had become indifferent of the Blessings God had wrought, or unconcerned for God s ways. Putting Leaven out of their houses was a picture of them cleaning up their lives. In like manner, the Lord s Supper is for Purifying/cleansing. 1 Cor 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: He was taking directly to the church at Corinth. They slipped back into Carnality and needed to be cleansed. 1 Cor 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. When we come to the Lord s Supper, we are to Cleanse ourselves, put away malice, wickedness, grievances, and sin from our lives. We are to love each other, and that s hard to do if you re not close to Calvary! We are to put off these things that hinder our fellowship with God and each other. This prepares us to partake of the Lord s Supper because we are not coming to His table with Sin, or Leaven in our lives. This cleansing makes us worthy to partake, if we do not cleanse ourselves, we are not worthy. 1 Cor 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Some might say, that is why we aren t planning to partake,

That s Disobedience. We are to get right, and do Right because it is right. The Lord s supper is to bring us to a place where we renew our fellowship with the Lord. (2 Chron 7:14) If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Last Spring was so precious, many a tear was shed on the altar and the devil attacked, but the problem is we tend to cool off. It is an occasion for us to lay aside the Weighs, and sins that beset us! Rom 12:1-2 Every Christian needs to make this a time of Rededication of every aspect to the Lord Just as we need to cleanup physically, because we are contaminated by the filth of living in this world, we must also clean up spiritually. This is the most solemn occasion we have as Christians, and know that we tread upon Holy Ground! If the purpose of the Lord s Supper does not get within and have the effect that is ought to have, then beloved we have fallen far short of the observance of the Lord s Supper. This has a great significance. It is not to be taken lightly. It is not to be done haphazardly. Vs 27-31 By following the Biblical example, we feel within ourselves that we have submitted ourselves unto God in a way that refreshes our souls and draws us closer to the Lord Jesus Christ with a fresh new walk. This is the night when the church is it s most Holy. (D.) It s the Lord s Supper, He determines WHO is to Observe it: It s the Lords Supper, He determines the Guest list. Those delivered from Judgment: The Saved (Ex 12:13) And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Those that partook of the Lamb: (Ex 12:8) Those under the Blood: (Ex 12:7) And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. The Lost have no part of Christ s Death, Burial, or Resurrection. It s the Lords Supper, He determines the Guest list. (Exodus 12:43, 45) No Stranger A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. (Ex 12:44, 48) Circumcision is their physical mark of Identification.

he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. Vs 49 They had to identify with Israel. Baptism-is our Spiritual Identifying Mark! (Rom 6:4-5) Likeness - Like As Makes you a Church Member: Acts 2:41-42 Church Membership: (Ex 12:3) A Lamb for a house! (Ex 12: 13, 46) (1 Cor 12:28) Apostles were the 1st Church Luke 22:14 Sat down with the twelve (Mark 14:17) Illus: Where was His mother? Mary Magdelene, 70, Where were the 120 he sent out 2x2? the Home Owner? Illus: Well Preacher I don t agree with that. Unfaithful members can partake, At their Own Risk 2 Issues at stake, Sin(Pride) & Membership Doesn t make either of you right with God! Are you ready to partake of the Lord s Supper? Are you Saved? Baptized, Church Member? Have you examined yourself, and purged your life from sin? I. It is the Lord s Church: He decides what it is.
