By the power of the cross our redemption is accomplished. As we meditate on the consequences of God s sacrifice on this day, the church proclaims the good news that the cross of Christ is both necessary and sufficient for our salvation. With the command of Maundy Thursday lingering in our ears and hearts, Good Friday reminds us that the freedom to obey comes only as a gift from God. At the close of the service, you will be asked to leave silently. There is no benediction, indicating the continuity of Good Friday with Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday. This is the great Triduum, Latin for three days, which is the holiest time of the church year. We ask respectfully that you turn OFF all cell phones and electronic devices during this solemn service that ends in silence, and refrain from conversation until in the parking lot. Our Lord gave us his all on the cross; we need to focus on the cross, and the cross alone, during this time of worship. LARGE PRINT VERSION AVAILABLE
PRELUDE Were You There? - Richard Purvis CLOSING HYMN Were You There? WELCOME * PSALM 22:1-8, 16-18 (read responsively) P 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? C 2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. P 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. C 4 In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. P 5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed. C 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. P 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: C 8 He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him. P 16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. C 17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. P 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. *Repeat verse 1, a cappella Please depart in silence and remain silent until you reach the parking lot. -1- -8-
ANTHEM The Lamb is Crucified - Michael Showalter HYMN I Will Sing of My Redeemer Come to the hill of death and shame, the Lamb is lifted high. As He takes each labored breath, the earth begins to groan. The shadows fall as deep as death When God forsakes His own. Crying out in agony, He shouts, My God! My God! Why have You forsaken me? Then whispers, It is done! THE SEVENTH WORD Luke 23:46 (pew Bible, p.748, LP1641) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
