Stay with Me; let Me be your friend. I know there has been darkness, I know there has been pain, stay with Me, in your heart let Me remain. Stay with Me; let Me be your counselor, wonderful counselor. Stay with Me; let Me be your God, mighty God. I know it can seem hopeless, but this is why I came. Stay with Me, in your heart let Me remain. Can you hear the still, small voice? It has always been your choice to listen or ignore the prompting of the Spirit of the Lord, the Lord. Stay with Me; let Me be your strength and shield, Everlasting Father. Let Me be your peace, Prince of peace. I know the world distracts you, would turn your eyes away. Stay with Me, in your heart let Me remain. Stay with Me. By the power of the cross our redemption is accomplished. As we meditate on the consequences of God s sacrifice on this day, the church proclaims the good news that the cross of Christ is both necessary and sufficient for our salvation. With the command of Maundy Thursday lingering in our ears and hearts, Good Friday reminds us that the freedom to obey comes only as a gift from God. At the close of the service, you will be asked to leave silently. There is no benediction, indicating the continuity of Good Friday with Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday. This is the great Triduum, Latin for three days, which is the holiest time of the church year. We ask respectfully that you turn OFF all cell phones and electronic devices during this solemn service that ends in silence, and refrain from conversation until in the parking lot. Our Lord gave us his all on the cross; we need to focus on the cross, and the cross alone, during this time of worship. LARGE PRINT VERSION AVAILABLE

PRELUDE Were You There? - Richard Purvis CLOSING HYMN Were You There? WELCOME * PSALM 22:1-8, 16-18 (read responsively) P 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? C 2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. P 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. C 4 In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. P 5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed. C 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. P 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: C 8 He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him. P 16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. C 17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. P 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. *Repeat verse 1, a cappella Please depart in silence and remain silent until you reach the parking lot. -1- -8-

ANTHEM The Lamb is Crucified - Michael Showalter HYMN I Will Sing of My Redeemer Come to the hill of death and shame, the Lamb is lifted high. The soldiers curse and mock His name, and hope begins to die. Nails pierce through His hands and feet; His foes on ev ry side. Redemption s work is now complete. The Lamb is crucified. As He takes each labored breath, the earth begins to groan. The shadows fall as deep as death When God forsakes His own. Crying out in agony, He shouts, My God! My God! Why have You forsaken me? Then whispers, It is done! THE SEVENTH WORD Luke 23:46 (pew Bible, p.748, LP1641) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. When he had said this, he breathed his last. (NIV) -7- -2-

THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST THE FIRST WORD Luke 23:34 (pew Bible, p.748, LP1641) 34 Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. (NIV) THE FIFTH WORD John 19:28 (pew Bible, p.768, LP1685) 28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I am thirsty. (NIV) KYRIE ( Lord, have mercy sung by choir) THE SIXTH WORD John 19:30 (pew Bible, p.768, LP1685) 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, It is finished. With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (NIV) THE SECOND WORD Luke 23:43 (pew Bible, p.748, LP1641) 43 Jesus answered him, I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise. (NIV) -3- -6-

OFFERING Stay With Me - Ruth Elaine Schram (lyrics on back cover) KYRIE ( Lord, have mercy sung by choir) THE FOURTH WORD Matthew 27:46 (pew Bible, p.705, LP1548) 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (NIV) THE THIRD WORD John 19:26-27 (pew Bible, p.768, LP1684) 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Dear woman, here is your son, 27 and to the disciple, Here is your mother. From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (NIV) HYMN Ah, Holy Jesus HYMN When I Survey the Wondrous Cross -5- -4-
