Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral A Servant Church in the Heart of the City The Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018 10:15 a.m.

Service Notes Holy Eucharist Hymn numbers refer to the blue book, The Hymnal 1982. Please rise, as able, for portions of the service marked with an asterisk (*). Thank you for observing silence. Voluntary: Cantabile César Franck Announcements * Entrance Hymn: Lord, you give the great commission Lord, you give the great commission: Heal the sick and preach the word. Lest the Church neglect its mission and the Gospel go unheard, help us witness to your purpose with renewed integrity; with the Spirit s gifts empower us for the work of ministry. Lord, you call us to your service: In my name baptize and teach. That the world may trust your promise, life abundant meant for each, give us all new fervor, draw us closer in community; with the Spirit s gifts empower us for the work of ministry. Lord, you show us love s true measure: Father, what they do, forgive. Yet we hoard as private treasure all that you so freely give. May your care and mercy lead us to a just society; with the Spirit s gifts empower us for the work of ministry. Lord, you bless with words assuring: I am with you to the end. Faith and hope and love restoring, may we serve as you intend, and, amid the cares that claim us, hold in mind eternity; with the Spirit s gifts empower us for the work of ministry. Lord, you make the common holy: This my body, this my blood. Let your priests, for earth s true glory, daily lift life heavenward, asking that the world around us share your children s liberty; with the Spirit s gifts empower us for the work of ministry. * Easter Acclamation eluia. * The Liturgy of Welcome for the Interim Dean The Bishop s Representative today is the Canon to the Ordinary Steven Rottgers. Canon Rottgers, Senior Warden Bob Carlson, Junior Warden Terri Curran and Interim Dean Evelyn Hornaday gather in front of the altar, and face the congregation. Senior Warden Today, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral begins another chapter of ministry. This is an important period of time in the larger transition of leadership that has already begun. Today, we formally welcome the Very Rev. Evelyn Hornaday as our Interim Dean. The Rt. Rev. Martin Field has asked that his Letter of Appointment be read on this occasion. The Bishop s Representative reads the Letter of Appointment. Bishop s Mother Evelyn, in the presence of God and this congregation, will you commit yourself to this new Representative trust and responsibility, and promise to discharge your duties in harmony with the Constitution and Canons of the Church? Interim Dean I will, with God s help. Junior Warden Will you love, serve, and pray for these people of God, nourishing us with the Word and Holy Sacraments, and lead us forward during this time of transition? Interim Dean I will, with God s help. Senior Warden Will you lead these people of God in giving faithful witness to the Word and making known the love of God through loving service among us, in the diocese, and in the world beyond this doorstep? Interim Dean I will, with God s help. Bishop s May Almighty God who has given you the will to do these things, give you the power of his Spirit, so Representative that you may perform them with strength and compassion. Amen. Senior Warden Vestry, staff and congregation of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, will you receive this messenger of Christ, the Very Rev. Evelyn Hornaday, who continues the work of bringing the Gospel of hope and salvation? Will you regard her as a fellow servant of Christ, now called to be our leader, and work with her in ministry? We will, with God s help. Bishop s Will you pray for her, honor her, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Representative Christ? We will, with God s help. Bishop s Representative (to the Junior Warden) Will you present the keys to Mother Evelyn, symbolic of her role among you? Junior Warden hands keys to Interim Dean. Senior Warden By your statements of commitment to your ministry in this place and by the affirmation of this congregation, we welcome you as Interim Dean of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Interim Dean is welcomed by the congregation. page 3

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. page 4

Sending of the Children The children and leaders gather at the chancel steps to be sent to Haden Hall for chapel. The Lessons are seated. Meditative silence follows the readings. First Reading: Isaiah 12:1 6 Lector You will say in that day: I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, and you comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 96:1 7 said in unison Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. Second Reading: 1 Peter 4:7 11 Lector The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. * Gospel Hymn: 487 Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life page 5

Gospeller When he had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, Where I am going, you cannot come. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered, Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow afterward. Peter said to him, Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you. Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him. Philip said to him, Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon page 6

* Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. * Prayers of the Leader Risen Lord, Hear our prayer. * The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Celebration Prayer Those celebrating anniversaries of birth, marriage, and other joyous occasions are invited to come forward for prayer. O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servant(s) as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. page 7

Offertory Anthem He is the Way He is the Way. Follow Him through the Land of Unlikeness; You will see rare beasts, and have unique adventures. He is the Truth. Seek Him in the Kingdom of Anxiety; You will come to a great city that has expected your return for years. The Holy Communion * Presentation Hymn Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Richard Wetzel He is the Life. Love Him in the World of the Flesh; And at your marriage all its occasions shall dance for joy. Text: W.H. Auden * The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: page 8

Music: William Mathias (b. 1934). Copyright: 1976, Oxford University Press, Inc. Rights Reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A-710278. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. page 9

The Lord s Prayer Breaking of the Bread And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Music: William Mathias (b. 1934). Copyright: 1976, Oxford University Press, Inc. Rights Reserved. Sing unto the Lord, and praise his Name: be telling of his salvation from day to day. Declare his honor unto the heathen: and his wonders unto all people. Psalm 96:1-3 Communion Hymn: 335 I am the bread of life Sending of Eucharistic Visitors The Eucharistic Visitor is sent out with these words: We who are many are one body, For we all share one bread, one cup. * Postcommunion Prayer Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. * Blessing Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated unto you; and then use us, we pray you, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
