Does not mean: 1. Merely a mental agreement to truth, though that is a part of it (Gen. 15:5, 6). 2. That we are saved at the point of faith ( accept Jesus as your personal savior ) (Acts 2:36-38; 22:16). 3. That faith excludes things we must do before or after we become Christians (Rom. 1:5; James 2:14-22).

Not what some think, not a -- guess -- unfounded hope -- mere desire -- blind, leap in the dark Many in our culture think people of faith are good but simple people, deceived by an unsubstantiated religion to help them through their difficulties in life.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (11:1) (KJV) Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (11:1) (NIV) Now faith is assurance (the giving substance to) of things hoped for, a conviction (test) of things not seen (11:1) (ASV)

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (11:1) (KJV) 1. Faith Gives Substance (undergirding) of Hope. Hope = Desire + Expectation Confidence = Assurance, Certainty, Firm Belief

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (11:1) (KJV) 1. Faith Gives Substance (undergirding) of Hope. Hope = Desire + Expectation Confidence = Assurance, Certainty, Firm Belief Hope looks to the future!

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (11:1) (KJV) 1. Faith Gives Substance (undergirding) of Hope. Hope = Desire + Expectation Confidence = Assurance, Certainty, Firm Belief 2. Provides Evidence of the Unseen. How God created the earth 11:3 Noah s work on ark 11:7 Abraham s journey to promised land -- 11:8ff

Hope = Desire + Expectation Confidence = Assurance, Certainty, Firm Belief 2. Provides Evidence of the Unseen. -How God created the earth 11:3 -Noah s work on ark 11:7 -Abraham s journey to promised land -- 11:8ff Faith involves the past, present, as well as the future. Faith is based on evidence, but not empirical evidence. It involves things unseen (2 Cor. 5:7; Rom. 8:24-25).

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (11:1) (KJV) 3. Comes by hearing (Rom. 10:17). Faith gives to things past & future all the reality of present existence. Faith is an assent to truths made credible by the testimony of God s word, & it is convinced regarding & trusts in that which it does not see it is trust in God which leads to unquestioned obedience to His will, & without obedience there is no real faith.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (11:1) (KJV) -- Confidence in matters past, present, and future that we cannot see, and which comes based only on the fact that God has spoken it in His Word.

Saving Faith 1. Understands the incomprehensible, vs. 3. 2. Leads us to worship acceptably, vs. 4. 3. Leads us to please God, vs. 5. 4. Believes God will reward the diligent, vs. 6. 5. Sees the unimaginable & moves with Godly fear, vs. 7. 6. Leads us to go where we do not know, vss. 8-10. Illustrated in Hebrews 11

Saving Faith 7. Gives us power over obstacles, vss. 11-12. 8. Seeks a heavenly country, vs. 16. 9. Offers the unthinkable, vss. 17-19. 10. Is Confident that God s promises will come to pass, vs. 22. 11. Takes persecution, looking to a future reward, vss. 24-26. 12. Moves one to do what God said even when there is no seeming connection between the command and the blessing promised, vss. 28, 30. Illustrated in Hebrews 11

Our faith can & should grow! (Rom. 10:17; Jno. 20:30-31; II Peter 1:5; 3:18) The more we know of God s word, the more we will know of God, His character, activities, will, warnings, & promises, and hence, the more faith(ful) we can be! Without a knowledge of God s word there can be no faith (Rom. 10:17; Jno. 20:30-31). God puts a premium on knowing His Word, and so should we (Jno. 6:44, 45). -- for ourselves, family, and everyone else!

Saving faith will.. 1. Lead us to obey the gospel. (Every thing done in obedience to the gospel involves faith.) Hear (read) things we never saw & believe that they describe things the way they were and will be! (Rom. 10:17) Believe in One we can t see Repent based on this One s word Be baptized which affects something we cannot see (Col. 2:12)

Saving faith will.. 1. Lead us to obey the gospel. (Every thing done in obedience to the gospel involves faith.) 2. Sustain us through the most difficult trials. Suffering (Rom. 8:18) Glory awaits in heaven Temptations (I Pet. 2:11-12) Life is a sojourn (seen as aliens, strangers), pilgrimage (one from a far country in a strange land) from an ever so brief life to eternity!

Saving faith will.. 1. Lead us to obey the gospel. (Every thing done in obedience to the gospel involves faith.) 2. Sustain us through the most difficult trials. 3. Give us confidence to worship God as He directs & live righteous lives, regardless of adversaries. 4. Make our own resurrection and eternal life with God just as real as our very presence today! (John 5:28-29; 11:25-26; Acts 17:30-31)

We can be full of faith (or faithful)! If others had this kind of faith in times past, we can now!
