LOOKING TO JESUS John 1:19-34 Turning Point Church 2019 01 06 Turning Point Church 3/3/2019 INTRO: FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV) For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Keep your eye on the prize! Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV) 1
Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. John 6:26 (NIV) For my Father s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. John 6:40 (NIV) Dear God, Thank you for sending Jesus to die for my sin. I want to give you control of my life. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of the Holy Spirit and eternal life. Help me to know you better and to learn from the Bible how I can live a life that pleases you and helps others. Amen. 1. KNOW WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST 19 Now this was John s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, I am not the Messiah. 21 They asked him, Then who are you? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you the Prophet? He answered, No. John 1:19-21 (NIV) 2
22 Finally they said, Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, Make straight the way for the Lord. John 1:22-23 (NIV) A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:3 (NIV) WHO I AM IN CHRIST By Dr. Neil Armstrong Insert in the bulletin 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet? 26 I baptize with water, John replied, but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. John 1:24-27 (NIV) 2. TALK TO OTHERS ABOUT WHO JESUS IS 3
1. Do you have any kind of spiritual belief? 2. To you, who is Jesus 3. Do you believe there is a heaven and a hell? 4. If you died right now, where would you go? If heaven, why? 5. If what you believe where not true, would you want to know it? Share Jesus Without Fear 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29 (NIV) In a loud voice they were saying: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! Revelation 5:12 (NIV) 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:6-7 (NIV) And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. John 1:34 (ESV) Revelation 12:11 (NIV) 4
3. THANK GOD FOR THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT 32 Then John gave this testimony: I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John 1:32-33 (NIV) And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. Mark 1:4 (NIV) Luke 1:15 (NIV) For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. CONC: JESUS MUST BECOME GREATER 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NIV) 5
He must become greater; I must become less. Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. John 3:30 (NIV) Matthew 11:11 (NIV) All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. John the Baptist said, in effect, Christ is the light; I am merely the lampstand. 1 Peter 5:5 (NIV) Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. Oswald Sanders Mark 9:35 (NIV) 6
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. INTRO: FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS 1. KNOW WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST 2. TALK TO OTHERS ABOUT WHO JESUS IS 3. THANK GOD FOR THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT CONC: JESUS MUST BECOME GREATER James 4:10 (NIV) Follow- Through Guide 7
