HUNGER MEAL- The next hunger meal will be on Sunday, September 27 th at Pearl Road United Methodist Church. Because of a reception at PRUMC that day, we cannot get into the kitchen until 4 PM (the hungry folks arrive at 5 PM!). Therefore, a takeout meal will be prepared. It will consist of sandwiches(made at the church), fruit, and cookies, and will be a takeaway- type meal. Stations will be set up, and folks will pick up one of each item at each station and take the meal out. People are needed to prepare sandwiches and set up stations. Also we will need people to prepare cookies for dessert. Cleanup should be short. We did a similar meal in September of 2015, and it worked out well. The usual sign-up board is in the narthex for people to indicate where they can be of help. SENT EMAILS I am still having trouble receiving all of the emails sent to the buccoh@sbcglobal.net (main office email). (Yes, I check Spam File! :). I will always reply to your email with a short sentence. If you do not get a reply from me please resend your email. Thank You, Jeannette SUNDAY SCHOOL WILL BE CANCELLED September 3rd. We don't have a teacher, since many people will be out of town, for the holiday weekend, including me! Thank you, Heidi Spangler. SCHOOL SUPPLY/BOOK DRIVE FOR BACK TO SCHOOL!: Sometimes in the fury of purchasing supplies to go back to school in the fall, you end up with too many erasers or maybe you just couldn t pass up that sale for buy-one-get-one-free crayons? If so, OCWM will be more than happy to get these (any any other new or gently used school supplies you might have lying around) to kids who need them! Also, if you are clearing out your bookshelves, (especially kids books!) please contact us to arrange for a pick-up.

Children s books will be taken to the Cleveland Kids Book Bank and adult books taken to the Books for Prisoners program. For more information and to schedule a pick-up (only bring small packages/boxes/items to church, please!) contact Kate Klonowski at keightykay@gmail.com or call/text (216) 534-3498 (she will also take other household items and women s clothing to Edna House if you give her extra hugs!). THE FACILITIES MINISTRY is looking anyone wishing to help maintain the landscaping. Weeding is the primary need and anyone who can help would be greatly appreciated. These are helpful to visitors and new members to get to know our people. If you are missing a name tag, please let the Office know. THE BLESSINGS JAR is for your use to drop in a note and/or money in response to a special blessing you have received during the week. We would like to recognize your blessing in the Pillar if you wish. THE PEACE CANDLE is placed up front every Sunday to remind us of Jesus teachings on peace and peacemakers. We pray that peace between nations, within our country, community, families, and ourselves will become a priority for all. PLEASE BE SURE to enter your meeting and event schedule in the office calendar. This is used to list your times in both the Weekly Bulletin and in the Monthly Pillar. MONTHLY CALENDAR ONLINE the Church Calendar is also printed on our website: wwwbrecksvilleucc.org. It is filled with up to date events, and times, even last minute changes. Please check it out. DID YOU MISS last Sunday's service or do you just want to have a chance to rehear Pastor Dave's sermon. The Sunday services are recorded in their entirety on audio CDs each week. You can borrow a CD in the church office and listen to it at your convenience at home or in your car. Several recent weeks' recordings are always available. Check them out and check them out.

Readings The Old Testament - Isaiah 56:1-8 Thus says the Holy One: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my saving help will come, and my deliverance be revealed. Happy is the person who does this, the one who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it, and refrains from doing evil. Do not let the foreigner joined to the Holy One say, God will surely separate me from God s people ; and do not let the eunuch say, I am just a dry tree. For thus says the Holy One: To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant, I will give in my house and within my walls, a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. And the foreigners who join themselves to the Holy One, to minister to God, to love the name of the Holy One, and to be God s servants, all who keep the Sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant - these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Thus says the Holy One, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered. The New Testament - Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon. But Jesus did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us. He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. He answered, It is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly.

The Continuing Testament - from Teaching Jesus - by Barbara Lundblad [edited] The Gospel writer Matthew dares to give us a very human Jesus, and paints a specific picture of the woman who approaches him. She s a Canaanite woman. She is not one of Jesus people. This should be no surprise, as Jesus has gone into the region of Tyre and Sidon. Yet she seems to know who Jesus is. She begs him to heal her daughter who is tormented by a demon. She s desperate and comes out shouting. The disciples want nothing to do with her: Send her away! they tell Jesus. But this Canaanite woman isn t going anywhere. She won t give up. Lord, help me, she begs. This is where Jesus goes to the dogs: It is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. But the Canaanite woman is feisty and stubborn. The life of her daughter is at stake. She picks up his words and throws them right back: Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. When Jesus hears this, he says, Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish Jesus finally heard and came to believe. Jesus was converted that day to a larger vision of the Realm of God. Jesus saw and heard a fuller revelation of God in the voice and in the face of the Canaanite woman. Every generation sees some people as other and puts them under the table with the dogs. We could make a long list of people we see as different - different race, different customs, different religion. Two summers ago at a raucous Town Meeting I attended, a white woman spoke through her tears, What happened to my America? I want my America back. I guess she meant an America where people look like her; and those who don t are somehow less deserving. The critical question for us today, then, is this: If Jesus could grow and change, then why can t we?
