Christmas Message Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara Diocese of Faridabad Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we are getting ready for the first Christmas after the erection of our new Diocese, I am very happy to send you my Christmas greetings and prayerful wishes to you and all your family members. May the Babe of Bethlehem bless you abundantly with His choicest blessings during this Holy Season and throughout the New Year. During Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. More than a Birthday celebration, it is the celebration of God becoming man, the divinization of the human nature, the mystery of incarnation. In the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, we read that many times and various ways God spoke to mankind (cf. Heb 1:1). On such occasions the Word of God was transmitted to the humankind. But with the birth of Jesus, something new has happened. God himself appeared in the world. He has revealed himself. He has come to live in our midst. Jesus became Emmanuel, God with us. This was the great joy of Christmas for the early Church, that after long waiting for a Saviour, God has appeared, he has come down to the earth. He has appeared as the kindness and love of God for mankind (Tit3:4). Thus we are blessed with his kindness and love in our lives. We are also bound to practice this love and charity towards others. It was a real epiphany, the great light that has appeared to us. The stars and lights that shine during Christmas symbolize that eternal light appeared in the world for enlightening the darkness of humankind.jesus has come as the Prince of Peace. With the appearance of the Saviour real peace has been ensured in the whole world, for the whole human beings: Glory to God in the highest and Peace on earth. Prophet Isaiah announced: A child is born for us, a son given to us and dominion is laid on his shoulders; and this is the name they give him: Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace. Wide is his dominion in a peace that has no end (Is9:5f.). A child, in all its weakness, is Mighty God. A child, in all its neediness and dependence, is Eternal Father. And his peace has no end. The prophet had previously described the child as a great light and had said of the peace he would usher in that the rod of the oppressor, the footgear of battle, every cloak rolled in blood would be burned (Is 9:1, 3-4). God has appeared as a child, as a prince of peace. It is in this guise that he pits himself against all violence and brings a message that is peace. In modern times, the world - 5 - November-December 2012

is continually threatened by violence in so many places and in so many different ways, -- in Syria, in Afghanistan, in Nigeria -- there are oppressors rods and bloodstained cloaks. The recent shooting of innocent school children in Connecticut in the US shocked the world. In our own society different shades of violence could be seen and felt. We should cry out to the Lord: O mighty God, you have appeared as a child and you have revealed yourself to us as the One who loves us, the One through whom love will triumph. And you have shown us that we must be peacemakers with you. We love your childish estate, your powerlessness, but we suffer from the continuing presence of violence in the world, and so we also ask you: manifest your power, O God; strengthen the oppressed with your power of peace. In this time of ours, in this world of ours, cause the oppressors rods, the cloaks rolled in blood and the footgear of battle to be burned, so that your peace may triumph in this world of ours, in our society, in our families. As our new Diocese is created this year we should celebrate all the more enthusiastic and let us convert the carol singing and Christmas celebration a moment of common witnessing. Especially during this year of faith, it should be an expression of our deeper faith and greater unity. I take this opportunity to wish you all a BLESSED CHRISTMAS and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR! May the Prince of Peace bless us all with his durable peace and joy, driving us forward his divine hope. My blessings to all of you dear brothers and sisters.i remember and bless in a particular way those who are sick and suffering, those who suffer physical and mental agony and those are lonely and worried. "Build up our Church" Major Archbishop It is the greek philosopher Aristotle said that God is Actus purus, pure act: that means God is one who is always acting. Bible says that god is love and that love is not an abstract but love in action. It is by God s love that He creates the whole world that it contains. Among the living beings man is the crown of creation. Out of love God also redeems man who fails against god s plan for him. It is love itself that sanctifies man in all it s activities. In other words man is a being in which God is acting by creation, redemption, and by sanctification. In Hindu religion we find that god takes different incarnations in order to give deliverance in man s decline. In Islam it is a set of life discipline, prayer at prescribed times, fasting and alms giving that gives God s blessings for the believer. Other religions in the world also have similar believes and practices to receive God s blessings. In a multi religious context in India, dialogue between believers in different religions is the most suitable path to create greater solidarity and harmony in the society. Similar dialogue is also needed among different cultures also. In the context of globalization and international cooperation inter religious and inter cultural dialogue is the best means to create peace and harmony in every nation and among the nations of the world. Nation building and world building is the task of every Christian and also of the church. The church in India visualizes peaceful coexistence and creative cooperation among believers of different religions in India. We do consider that the diversities in language, race, culture and religion are really God given as such for the growth of unified human society in this vast country. Unity in diversity is a message that we can give to the world where many countries take independence only on the basis of either race or language or even religion. Humanity is one by creation. Man comes from the only one God and his destiny is the same God. To explain all the differences in the unity of God and of humanity is the saving path to tread whatever may be the difference in which we live. Christianity proclaims the unity, because Christ reveals that Gog is our father and all human beings are brothers and sisters. It is the reality of God that unites all together and the principles of this unity is love. Wherever hatred prevails, God is absent. Where ever war wages God disappears. The mission of Jesus was to unite the Greek and the Jews. It is the unity of all Indians that the Christians have to strive after as their life goal. Individuals and society have responsibilities to create this unity wherever they are. We all have to pay price to such an endeavor. It is for this unity of different religious communities that the Father of the Nation sacrificed his - 9 - November-December 2012

life. The situation of the country might have changed and the forces of disunity have taken different shapes and coloures. The men of good will in all the religions speak for unity and unified action, but extremism has it s own sway on different sections of the society sometimes even those who are at the helm of affairs in religion and society. The outburst of conflicts and terror are the result of extremism in religious faith and practice. It is high time that the Indian society in one voice condemned violence and uprooted it in all it s forms. Let us work together in inter religious and intercultural dialogue and work for the unity of the nation on the basis of our strong national heritage and our own faith. Charity is the touchstone of integrity of a religious believer. If one cannot find God in his neighbor he cannot find God elsewhere. As Tagore says in Githanjali; God is there where the tiller is tilling the hard ground and where the path maker is breaking stones. He is with them in sun and in the shower and his garment is covered with dust. Only if we see God in the poor worker and the suffering neighbor and do the needful can we say that we serve God in whom we believe. Jesus said in the parable of Good Samaritan that he who is in need of your help is your neighbour. In the context of globalization where the chance of forgetting the poor is on rise. It is the duty of true believers and religion to work for their uplift with love and kindness. Jesus again says that if you love one another by that the world will know that you are my disciple. Over and above the actions of generosity and love from the part of the individual Christians the Syro -Malabar church owns and operates a large network of institutional, charitable activities. We have 4860 educational institutions serving the needs of the growing younger generation. There are 2614 healthcare and charitable institutions including hospitals, institutions for differently abled children, homes for the destitute, homes for the homeless and the abandoned rescued from the streets. It is in these institutions that God who is love resides and provides for His less fortunate children. It is here that Jesus who is the incarnation of God s love becomes present and active in words and deeds of his servants in these institutions. If there was one Mother Teresa who gained the attention of the whole world for her heroic witness of charity. There are thousands of others who in the anonymity of there own situations serve the poor in manifold ways. It is to give new energy and enthusiasm for the commitment of the church for the spread of the message and witness of love that the Syro-Malabar church launched the Mission Year. St. Francis Assisi, when he was 18 years of age entered a church and prayed. Then he had no real understanding of what faith is. He prayed before a crucifix. he had a voice in his heart. Francis, rebuild my church, as you see it is in ruins. He thought that it is to rebuild that church he was praying Santa Miano. He rebuilt it with the help of others and his own manual work. He rebuilt not only Santa Miano but also a church near by. He was not yet happy by that. He prayed again, and he heard the voice again. Francis rebuild my church. He then understood that God is speaking to him to rebuild the real church, church of Christ. That has to continue in our world. It is up to us to rebuild the church of Christ. Let us take up the challenge. November-December 2012-10 -

We being part of one family no matter which faith or sects we belong to. We need to be united to keep alive the soul of the nation.
