Announcement from the Youth Committee Regarding the Youth Director Position. The ATCS Youth Committee wishes to inform the membership that Oren Dishy, who has capably and professionally served our Kehilla over the past two years as Youth Director, will not be accepting a renewed contract for the coming year due to family and personal reasons. On that basis, Oren will be concluding his service to our Synagogue as of July 31, 2016. We look forward to Oren and his family remaining an active part of our Shul community, and we wish to take this opportunity to wish him much hatlzacha and thank him for all of his outstanding work with our Shul s youth, and the Shul in general. In light of Oren s departure, The Youth Committee, along with the Board of the ATCS, wish to invite the Kehilla to a meeting at the TCS this Sunday, May 8th from 4:30-5:30 pm, to share thoughts and ideas regarding the next youth director. We strongly encourage the membership to attend. If one is unable to attend, we will accept ideas and discussion points by email to: theshul@aish.com. However, it is much preferred that members make every effort to attend this important meeting, as it will shape the future of our Youth Services & Staff. It should be noted that Oren has offered to remain with the Shul until the appropriate replacement is found and, if needed, to assist in the training of the Youth Director. Again, we express our appreciation to Oren for all he has done and look forward to seeing him and his family on an ongoing basis. Continues
Profiles This week we continue our new feature in the bulletin with the second instalment of PROFILES (TCS Editor: and the first instalment actually sent to the TCS editor but we will deal with that later). Each week, we will profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive manner to help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we feature Brian and Jeannine Callan. TCS: How did you both get involved with TCS? Brian: Back in the 80 s we started going to AISH when it was on Wilson. Once we moved to Thornhill we became involved with Ohr Somayach until it was disbanded. At that point we davened at the BAYT until Rabbi Rothman who we knew from Ohr Somayach reached out to me to help lead Rosh Hashana services for the relatively new AISH shul. TCS: Tell us more about your connection with Rabbi Rothman? Brian: Rabbi Rothman was instrumental in helping me develop my Cantorial skills. He was a teacher but he also encouraged me and introduced influential Chazzans including David Klein from the BAYT to me. TCS: Have you always had this gift of being able to sing so beautifully? Brian: Ever since I was a kid I loved music. My real passion, however, was for musical Dinner Theatre. I moved to Toronto from Ottawa to pursue that dream and worked in the field for a number of years right through University. TCS: Jeannine, you have also been blessed with amazing talent in the Arts. Jeannine: I have always enjoyed a variety of art mediums but my greatest passion and strongest art form is ceramics. In fact I teach ceramics at a Public High School. At home I don t have a studio or the time to paint, but having the facilities at school allows me to create the pottery I love. And my daughter Naomi and I enjoy a week long arts retreat every summer in Haliburton. TCS: Let s see acting, ceramics. A remake of Ghost with Brian as a more mature Patrick Swayze could be a great shul fundraiser. TCS Editor: That movie was not very tzniusdik. Let s move on. TCS: Imagine Shonna as Whoopi Goldberg. TCS Editor: Drop it. TCS: How did you meet each other? Jeannine: We were students at York University and lived on the same floor in the dorms. Brian used to sing and play guitar and I found that attractive. Brian: I had quite the following in those days when I was better known as Briance.
TCS: Brian, you have been with York University in the recruitment and admissions office for over 3 decades. What is the biggest change that you have seen over the years? Brian: Kids are a lot needier and parents are more difficult to deal with these days. TCS: Funny, that s exactly what our school principal said. TCS Editor: Actually it was your wife who said it and she was talking about you being needy. TCS: The role of the Gabbai is so critical to the shul yet so underappreciated. How have you managed? Brian: David Grabel has been incredibly helpful as a mentor and I recognize how it is an important part of kiruv. A lot of attention is directed to getting disenfranchised Jews in the door but another side of kiruv is guiding those already on the path who have never had to deal with a bris or saying kaddish. TCS: So can we expect you to challenge David s Lou Gehrig streak of service? Brian: No chance of that happening. My motto is looking to get uninvolved. TCS: Stuart is having a root canal next week and you are Shul president for a day. What changes do you make? Brian: Find a way to get more people involved in lectures, events and activities outside of Shabbat. Jeannine: Fix the doors on the second floor balcony entering the woman s section. They make more noise than dungeon doors. Shabbat Shalom
