John Sievering Senior Pastor Pastor.john@omahabbc.com Scott Jones Family Pastor familypastorscott@gmail.com Marilyn McBride Office Administrator office@omahabbc.com Website www.omahabbc.com Facebook www.facebook.com/benson Baptist Twitter I have been reading a book entitled The Outward Mindset: Seeing Beyond Ourselves by The Arbinger Institute. The premise of the book is to change lives and transform ineffective organizations by changing the way people think. Instead of focusing inward on problems and failings, people are encouraged to think in terms of how their actions affect those around them. This shift in thinking causes greater contentment of the people within the organization and greater effectiveness of the organization. Though this book is secular in nature, it resonates with the biblical principal of putting others before ourselves. I believe our congregation has become trapped in an inward mindset, thinking of ourselves first and not focusing on our mission of making a difference for Christ. This has lead to the spirit of discontent creeping into all we do. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 (ESV) This is an oft abused and misused Bible verses. People use this to encourage themselves and others to accomplish a difficult task, however, this was not the intent of the author. It is really about relying upon the strength of Christ to carry you through any circumstance of life and finding contentment. (Please read Philippians 4 for context and decide for yourself) So why is contentment so important? It is because discontentment can easily lead to sin. Consider the following six ideas from Jeff Robinson: - Discontentment is a mistrusting of God - Discontentment amounts to complaining against God s plan - Discontentment exhibits a desire to be sovereign - Discontentment covets something God has not been pleased to give you. - Discontentment subtly communicates that God has made a mistake. - Discontentment denies the wisdom of God and exalts my wisdom. (https://www.biblestudytools.com/blogs/founders-ministries-blog/6-reasons-discontentment-is-disobedience-to-god.html) Please ask yourself this, have the conversations you have heard or taken part in left you encouraged or discouraged about the future of our congregation? If you have been left discouraged by them, why even allow yourself to be exposed to that negative thought? Redirect the conversation to the positive, seeking solutions and lifting one another s spirits! And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV) In the most difficult times we need to pull together tighter, seek God s will harder, and examine our concerns together to find God s solutions. I came away from the last SLT meeting truly excited about what lies ahead for Benson Baptist Church. Yes, we will face challenges in the upcoming year. Yes, there will be changes that will occur. However, I am convinced that God has a plan for US, and that WE can make a lasting impact for Christ in the Benson community. I have been at fault for not sharing more with you about where I see our congregation headed and this has contributed to the building of concerns. I would like to begin to rectify this by making myself available on Sunday, February 10 th to discuss any concerns you have and answer questions. I will be in the sanctuary during Sunday school time and also following the worship service. Or if you prefer, please email me at jomayo4016@me.com Let us all recommit to work together to build the body of Christ in the Benson Community and see what God has in store for US. 1 Your servant in Christ Jon Mayo

SLT MINUTES JANUARY 2019 SLT Meeting Minutes, January 14, 2019 Jon Mayo opened the meeting. Deb presented devotions from 1 Samuel 15, the Lord delights in obedience more than sacrifices. Saul was rejected by God because he did not obey. We should listen to God through silence and prayer. Minutes of the December SLT meeting were approved by unanimous consent. The leadership retreat mentioned in the December minutes has been set for March 1-2. The SLT elected Jon Mayo as Moderator and Ernie Denniston as Secretary for 2019. Financial results were discussed. For the year, expenses exceed revenues by about $11,000. This deficit was covered by reserves from prior years, but reduced our reserves to about $15,000. Contributions for 2018 were almost $220,000 which was about $38,000 less than budget for the year. Pastor Scott highlighted upcoming church outreach activities, including the Super Bowl party and Fresh Expressions Conference in early February. He will be involved in several Region events in January and February. He will co-lead the Youth Leaders workshop January 26, and will be leading sessions in the Leaders in Training (LIT and LIT+) workshops February 8-9. In addition, he is organizing and leading the Youth Spring Retreat Weekend March 15-17. Pastor Scott will be on vacation from February 19-24. Pastor Scott raised concerns about lack of open communication between the SLT and the congregation. The concerns include the financial state of the church, staffing issues, members leaving, lack of growth, and direction the church is headed. The SLT discussed the issues, and Jon Mayo agreed to write a letter for the church newsletter expressing the SLT s outlook for the coming year and agreeing to better communicate issues and plans. Pastor John s Wednesday night Bible study had about twelve attending the first class, with about twenty signed up. He is working with others interested in our social media presence to create videos for the BBC Facebook, including an introduction to BBC and the current sermon series. Pastor John feels that our follow-up processes for visitors and absent members need to be fixed so that contacts are made and people are not neglected. He is testing a church tracking application that should automate more parts of the processes, including e-mail follow-up. Pastor John will be attending the Fresh Expressions Vision Day in February, a one-day experience for individuals and church leaders to learn new ways to be the Church. The SLT continued the discussion of the church s essential ministries and possible governance structures that it began at the December meeting. The focus was on how the SLT involves others in leading the church by helping congregation members move into doing ministry. The goal of the SLT is to enable the ministries and leaders to accomplish their missions. Jon Mayo presented an outline of thoughts on relational leadership, and how it could impact ministry and organization at BBC. The discussion will continue at future SLT meetings before recommendations are presented to the congregation. Pastor John has been in discussions with an individual who is interested in being a worship intern at our church. While our desire is for a long term worship leader, this could be an opportunity to help this individual develop leadership skills while we work through roles and compensation issues. Pastor John will arrange for a meeting with the worship team and inform the congregation of progress after that meeting. In other business, Holly Mayo will be leaving the Disbursing Treasurer position at the end of March. The SLT will discuss options to fill that position at the next meeting. She will also resign from the Operation Christmas Child leadership position. Prayer concerns: Communication with the congregation, relational leadership focus, Fresh Expressions Conference. 4

CONTINUED SLT MINUTES JANUARY 2019 Next SLT Meeting: Tuesday February 5, 2019, 7:00pm Ernie Denniston, Secretary BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS & SERVING CHRIST Exodus 34:6-8 The Lord passed before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children s children, to the third and the fourth generation. And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. 5

1 Timothy 1:11-13 that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
