Second Baptist Church, 12 Stillman Road, N. Stonington, CT 06359 God s Lighthouse on the Hill Fulfilling the Great Commission in the Community and the World February 2018 Issue #71 Worship with Us Sunday School 9:00 AM Morning Worship 10:00 AM Evening Service 6:00 PM Walk in love So what does it mean to walk in love? It means to be imitators of God. The way we were as little children, perhaps walking around the house in mom s high heels or dad s size 10 shoes. God made it easy for us to know how to walk in love with His words from I Corinthians 13:1-8: Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own. Is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. (Ephesians 5:2) 1 Mary Anne Jordan

Reading god s story A Chronological Daily Bible Pastor Dave challenged all of us to read through the George H. Guthrie Chronological Daily Bible in 2017. I am not sure everyone turned in their name when completed, but I know you are blessed probably in ways you don t even realize. Take a moment to chat with someone that took the challenge and gain some encouragement to do so in 2018. There is still time to catch up. 2017 Readers Karen Gouvin Pastor Dave Mary Anne Jordan Lynette Parkinson Evie Robinson Ellen Shinn Angie Tillinghast Chip Tillinghast Wayne Wilkinson Gayle Williams ReadeRs experience Pastor Dave On January 1, 2017, I set out to read through the Church supplied HCSB Bible in 2017. I had read through the Bible a number of times before, but this seemed like a new adventure since many of my fellow Church members were doing the same thing. One of the real blessings I received through this endeavor was that it opened up a new area of conversation with my wife, Mary Anne. Many days when I came home, she would ask, Did you do your reading yet? If I said yes, she would respond, I have a question. Then we would talk about her question(s) which almost always led us to a deeper discussion of the day s reading. Certainly, talking about God s Word is infinitely better than what you hear on the nightly news. As such, we have once again decided to read through the Bible in 2018. Lynette Parkinson Reading the Bible through the year has truly been a blessing and an eye opener. One thing that I learned was how much I DON T know about what the Bible says, which inspired me to delve into it 4
ReadeRs experience and research, not to mention using my most readily available resource, Pastor Dave. In a discussion we once had, he said to me, Do not muzzle an ox. (I Timothy 5:18) I thought what a strange statement that was and had no clue what he was talking about. Well, now I know. I ve committed to start again this year, and have already learned things that I missed in the last read. God is good! Ellen Shinn I read my whole Bible for the year and started reading it again for 2018. I feel reading the Bible on a regular basis is important to my life. It enriches my life. I learned how to best serve the Lord who gave His life for me. I get a better understanding of the Scriptures by reading. The words are so meaningful they spoke so loudly to me. Being closer to God is important to me. Gayle Williams Thank you for the encouragement and challenge to read (God s story) The Bible in a year, which I did. All of the Bible is for our learning. If the name and chapter of the book were on top of each page, it would have been a help to me. God s Word is truth. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32) Mary Anne Jordan Reading through the Bible has shown me what a living Word it is. Passages that I have read for years impacted me in new ways because I have grown in the Word and I have a different perspective on its meaning from previous readings. I have grown to a new level of understanding. Thank you God, what a blessing. Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. (Psalm 119:11) 5

SBC Jr./Sr. High Youth Group Update My name is Tanya Williams. I have been attending Second Baptist Church since the summer of 2015. I wanted to get more involved in the church, but really didn t know how I could contribute. I prayed about it and asked God to direct me to something He thought I would be strong in. This past August, the opportunity arose for an assistant in the Teen Youth Group on Wednesday evenings. Without hesitation, I asked how I could help, and Tom & Angela Brightman and myself began our youth studies in October. It has been quite an experience so far! We have such a great group of young teens who all contribute and all come together for an hour a week to read and learn scripture together. We integrate God s Word into life-lesson games. At times, it has been challenging for me, but I m learning so much from the kids as well. We have discussions on where they fit in this world, how they deal with teen issues and where the Word of God fits into their lives. This past week, the group had the chance to work with our new Associate Pastor, Joel Black while the Brightmans are taking a leave of absence temporarily. Joel will be leading us in the study of the book of Philippians. The kids will be asked to complete assigned homework to better comprehend the message. I would love to see more teens come and join us. Bring a friend, spread God s Word and sing until the whole world hears! The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7) 7
In the Mix Ashley is sharing her grandmother s old recipe from 1964. Baking is a great way to warm up your kitchen on these frosty February days! Ashley Taunton Mrs. Chummy s Colonial Carrot Cake 2 c sifted flour 2 c sugar 2 t baking powder 4 eggs 1 t baking soda 3 c grated raw carrots 2 t cinnamon 1 c chopped nuts 1 ¼ c salad oil Sift together flour and next 3 ingredients. Set aside. In large mixing bowl, combine oil and sugar, mix well. Add ½ flour mixture, blend. Add remaining flour, alternating with eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add carrots and nuts and mix well. Pour into lightly oiled 10 tube pan. Bake in slow oven (325 degrees) about one hour until cake tests done. Cool in pan upright. Remove from pan when cool. Garnish with whole nuts and glaze if you like. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. (I Peter 4:8-9) 8
