Come and Walk the Labyrinth: A New Invitation to an Old Prayer Posture On Ash Wednesday, February 10, we invite you to PRAY in a special way: while walking a labyrinth. We are accustomed to praying while sitting, with our eyes closed and hands folded. We are accustomed to praying together while standing in a circle. We are accustomed to praying while kneeling, at the altar or at a bedside. But what about praying while walking? Consider praying while walking a labyrinth. A labyrinth looks like a maze, but unlike a maze there are no decisions to make, no dead ends, no blind alleys. A labyrinth is a single path which winds and turns many times on the journey to the center. It is a setting for prayer in which the participant can quiet the mind and open the soul while embarking on a simple journey. While walking a labyrinth, many people choose to pray a simple repetitive phrase, such as Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. Others pray petitions that are suggested along the way. Others try to empty their minds of all distractions and simply be open to the movement of the Spirit. The journey through the labyrinth can be seen as an analogy for our journey through life. Our temporary labyrinth will be created in the Fellowship Hall as a pattern on the floor, using simple paper to mark the way, along with soft light and meditative music. Multiple people can travel the path at the same time. We will have cards with prayer suggestions available to you. The labyrinth will be open and available on Wednesday, February 10 at the following times: 11:00 am 2:00 pm 6:00 pm 7:00 pm 8:00 pm 9:00 pm Ash Wednesday Service 7:00 pm February 10 If you cannot attend the service, you are welcome to visit the chapel from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm for the imposition of ashes

Two small groups are forming with members from other churches: From Strangers to Siblings in Christ: A series of conversations about faith and race in a small group setting, with members from nearby Cornerstone Community Church, facilitated by pastor and University of Virginia and formerly Duke University professor Dr. Maurice Wallace and Rev. Ed Priestaf. We will reflect and discuss scripture, important books, current and honest experiences from our own lives. Each meeting will be about 1.5 hours long. Dates and times still to be selected by the group of interested participants. Contact the Church Office to Register. Mission Together: A Lenten small group study on the theme From Scarcity to Abundance with members from the newly formed Midtown Durham Mission Cluster of United Methodist Churches (St Paul, Bethany, Glendale Heights, McMannen, and Duke s Chapel). We will reflect on the scripture passages the pastors are preaching during Lent. Topics include Jesus and the Woman at the Well, Moses and the Quail in the Wilderness, Paul and the Jerusalem Offering, Elijah and the Widow at Zarapheth, and others. Occurring Thursday evenings, rotating between the churches. Contact the Church Office to Register. The NC Conference Freedom Ride March 15-18 2016. In partnership with Durham s School for Conversion, a learning and growing pilgrimage with the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement in Nashville, TN, with a diverse group of clergy and laity. Cost $450. More information at http://www.schoolforconversion.org/ freedomridemarch2016/ One new small group for McMannen s members: What s the Big Deal? A small group conversation orienting participants to the national and global issues facing our United Methodist Church, in anticipation of the church s potentially momentous General Conference May 10-20, 2016 in Portland, Oregon. We will learn some history and context on the issues, examine the intersections of citizenship and church membership, consider the implications of proposed changes to United Methodist Church, and will increase our capacity to lovingly speak, listen, and be heard in the presence of differing perspectives. Issues to be discussed may include the church s stance on homosexuality and its implications, potential changes on the policy of guaranteed appointments for pastors, the possible restructuring of the church in response to deep divisions and shrinking funds, the growth or decline of the denomination, and the church s global mission strategy. Led by Pastor Ed. 6:30pm, Tuesday evenings, Feb 9; Mar 1,8; Apr 12; May 3, 10. Contact the Church Office to register.
