Publication The Samaya Date 16 th December 2009 Bhubaneswar Page 8 VAL s bonanza to SMEs: Reiterates commitment to set up downstream aluminium park in Orissa SYNOPSIS: Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL) has reiterated its commitment to set up an aluminium park in Orissa with a view to promote downstream utilization of aluminium in the State and thereby, help develop the Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs). VAL s Senior Vice President Mr. Ajit Samal confirmed this today during an industry summit on Development of Downstream Industries by Way of Value Addition, organized by IPICOL, Orissa. This is in line with the promise given by the Chairman of Vedanta Group Mr. Anil Agarwal regarding the establishment of the downstream aluminium park at Jharsuguda. Vedanta is committed to the industrial development of the State, and its plan to come up with the aluminium park complements its motto. Mr. Samal stressed that the proposed park will help promote the budding enterprises by utilizing molten or liquid alumina, which would reduce the cost of producing different aluminium products like electrical appliances, aluminium extrusion and automobile parts. While the park is expected to house at least 10-15 medium size downstream units, it would also lead to generate direct and indirect employment opportunity for around 13,000-18,000 people, he said. VAL is also committed to enhance productivity through technical expertise & R&D support, reliable and uninterrupted power supply and availability of raw materials. VAL s plan to set up this aluminium park has been inspired from Sohar Aluminium which has successfully set up a unique but unstructured park in Oman. This ambitious project will also benefit the State Government is terms of tax and export incentives. By developing an industry-friendly atmosphere, it would encourage investments and industrialization process as a whole. 28

Publication The Samaja Date 11 th December 2009 Bhubaneswar Page 4 No violation of law by Vedanta SYNOPSIS: The State Government has informed that neither Vedanta nor OMC has violated the Environment and Forest norms. While the alumina project is situated at the foothills, the mining project would be carried out on the hill top, which is 10 kilometers away from the refinery project. It may be noted that the recent statement of Union Minister of Environment and Forest Mr. Jairam Ramesh regarding the illegal construction by Vedanta at the Niyamgiri hills by violating the norms raised concern and led uproar in the State Assembly. In its report, the State Government, on 1 st December, has made it clear that all the construction work is limited to the own land of the Company and therefore, is not unlawful. Minister Mr. Ramesh said that he has received written complaints mentioning that OMC and Vedanta have started illegal construction on the land, which is still under the control of the Revenue Department and thereby have disrespected the feelings of the local tribals who worship the Niyamgiri Hill as their God. He also said the Centre has sought clarifications from the State in this regard and indicated that a Central Team will visit Odisha to make a direct assessment of the situation as the Centre is yet to get any details from the State. On 27 th November, the Industry Secretary of Odisha, Mr. Ashok Dalwai informed that the State Government has sought the opinion of the District Administration of Kalahandi over the 30

complaints regarding violation of norms by Vedanta and he will get details soon. He made it clear that the State Government has not received any written complain from the Centre in this regard and has taken up this step after getting the information from the newspapers. It is now being expected that this report of the State Government would give relief to both OMC and Vedanta and would also expedite the mining process.
