SAINT HELEN S PARISH Season of Lent+Easter 2 nd SUNDAY OF LENT 17 th March 2019 AS HE PRAYED, THE ASPECT OF HIS FACE WAS CHANGED Lent TODAY S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 2) Genesis 15: 5 12. God enters into a Covenant with Abram, the man of faith. Response: Psalm 26. The Lord is my light and my help; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; before whom shall I shrink? O Lord, hear my voice when I call; have mercy and answer. Of you my heart has spoken: Seek his face. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek; hide not your face. Dismiss not your servant in anger; you have been my help. I am sure I shall see the Lord s goodness in the land of the living. Hope in him, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!. Philippians 3: 17 4: 1. Christ will transfigure our wretched bodies into copies of his glorious body. Acclamation for the Gospel: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. From the bright cloud, the Father s voice was heard: This is my Son, the Beloved, listen to him. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. Luke 9: 28 36. As Jesus prayed, the aspect of his face was changed... Prayer of the Faithful: R/. O Lord, hear our voice when we call. What is the point of Lent? - the Great Three-Days of entry into Christ s saving death-and-resurrection. Maundy Thursday Mass of Our Lord s SUPPER 7.30 pm Good Friday Celebration of Our Lord s PASSION 3.00 pm Holy Saturday Easter Sunday THE EASTER VIGIL AND MASS OF OUR LORD S RESURRECTION THE WORD THIS WEEK Coming face to face with God is awesome, terrifying. Abram s bloody covenant is sealed in a horror-film dream sequence, and the three drowsy disciples are also afraid at what they see. But the vision changes them all, in their relationship with God, and with their friend Jesus. Saint Paul sees how through our sticking at lenten repentance, conversion, turning back to God, God will transfigure us also. Then our homeland will be heaven, with Jesus. 8.30 pm Easter Mass of Our Lord s RESURRECTION 10.30 am EASTER

The action of breaking the bread was so significant in the early Christian community, that the name given to the celebration of the Eucharist was The Breaking of Bread. We too break the consecrated bread at Mass, but we can easily forget that before the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ on the altar, they were the gifts that we offered to God, gifts symbolising the gift that we are making of ourselves to God. Now in the breaking of bread it is ourselves, so often closed in on ourselves, that we have to break open and be willing to share as members of Christ. As pope Benedict said in The Sacrament of love : The Eucharist, since it embraces the concrete, everyday existence of the believer, makes possible, day by day, the progressive transfiguration of all those called by grace to reflect the image of the Son of God. Jim McManus C.Ss.R., in Sent to Proclaim the Gospel.
