SOUTH ZUMBRO NEWS A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF SOUTH ZUMBRO LUTHERAN CHURCH March 2018 Hly week is the end f this mnth! Then cmes Easter! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Nw what d we d? Our Lenten jurney is half ver. We will travel t the upper rm n Maundy Thursday with Jesus and his disciples. We will hear Jesus say thse pwerful wrds that are still effective when we hear them n Sunday mrnings, Given and shed fr yu fr the frgiveness f yur sins (Matthew 26:28). We will travel t the ft f the crss n Gd Friday and hear Jesus utter a lnely cry f abandnment, My Gd, my Gd, why have yu frsaken me? (Mark 15:34). We will hear the wrds f finality that Jesus spke with his last breath, It is finished! (Jhn 19:30), paying in full the price fr ur sin that separates us frm Gd. We will g t the empty tmb t hear again abut the grup f wmen that traveled there early n the first day f the week t find it empty. We will hear nce mre the wrds f the angels at the empty tmb, He is nt here, but has risen (Luke 24:6). The final, culminating Day f the Resurrectin is ver. Nw what d we d? The mnths f March and April remind us that Easter is mre than just ne day. Easter is an every Sunday celebratin during which we cme tgether t receive the fruit f the crss and resurrectin f Jesus the frgiveness f sins and the certainty f eternal life with Gd. Easter is als an every day celebratin in which we live each day trusting in Gd thrugh Christ, knwing that Jesus is the resurrectin and the life (Jhn 11:25). S, what d we d nw as we g tward the empty tmb? Let us fllw the example f the first witnesses f the empty tmb. After the tw angels reminded Mary Magdalene, Janna, Mary the mther f James, and the ther wmen that Jesus had risen, St. Luke tells us that they remembered the wrds, and returning frm the tmb they tld all these things t the eleven and t all the rest (Luke 24:8-9). They went frth frm the tmb changed by the resurrectin f Jesus. They went frth frm the tmb t bring an every day witness f Gd s pwer ver sin, death, hell, and Satan himself. S where d we g nce we leave the Suth Zumbr is a welcming, spiritually alive family f Gd, caring fr ne anther and reaching ut t encurage thers t knw Christ and His lve. Suth Zumbr Bulletin Bard Our thughts and prayers are with Gerhard Bungum and Tdd Dnley after they bth fell and brke a hip. Tdd is recvering at hme fllwing surgery, and Gerhard is recvering at Field Crest Care Center. Thank yu t everyne wh is getting phtgraphed fr the new Suth Zumbr Church Directry. It will be fun t see everyne s phts and put all thse names and faces tgether! The family f Grdn Gundersn is in ur thughts and prayers. Blessed be his memry! CPR (Celebrate, Praise, Rejice) empty tmb? Let us fllw the example f Jesus first disciples. After Jesus walked thrugh lcked drs t appear t the eleven disciples and t shw himself t Thmas, seven f the eleven disciples went back t their fishing business (Jhn 21:1-14). They went back t their vcatins r statins in life and tk the witness f the resurrectin with them. They lived in the jy f the resurrectin f Jesus while carrying ut the daily, rdinary labr and respnsibilities given t them. Similar t the wmen at the empty tmb and the eleven disciples, we are every day witnesses and participants in the resurrectin f Jesus. We believe and are baptized. We have the hpe f eternal life. We have the jy f the resurrectin living inside f us. Als, like the wmen at the empty tmb and the eleven disciples, we have vcatins r statins in life that Gd has given t us as gift. Mst f us are nt fishermen, but all f us have ne r mre f these callings: father, husband, mther, wife, sn, daughter, brther, sister, grandparent, emplyee, retiree, friend, and neighbr. Each f these callings cmes with a set f duties and respnsibilities. As repentant Christians, by Gd s grace we wrap the daily duties and respnsibilities f ur vcatins in the jy, lve, peace, and frgiveness f Christ. Mre than likely, thers will take ntice, and Gd will bless yur faithful wrk by giving yu pprtunities t tell all these things t all the rest (Luke 24:9). See yu in church! Pastr Elden Wind f Gd All are invited t a cntemprary wrship service n Saturday, March 10, at 7 pm in ur Scial Hall. It is a time t praise Gd and feel the Spirit f Gd alive in ur presence. Please plan t jin us fr this very special evening f wrship! Tiny breeze r mighty wind, swirling rund as Gd cmmands. Hats g flying. Branches bend. Little seeds spread thrugh the lands. Gd Almighty makes the wind; great big gusts can shape the sands. Awesme is the pwer f Gd, when even wind beys his plans.

Suth Zumbr Then and Nw Jhn and Anna Lien The February SZ newsletter histry article Then and Nw includes a cpy f the first rganizatinal meeting f Suth Zumbr held in 1868. The purpse f the first meeting was t plan the building f the church. Until this time church was held in private hmes. One f the members present the first meeting was Jhn Lien. At that meeting Jhn was elected t be n the building cmmittee. Jhn was a prminent figure in Suth Zumbr s early church histry, and after the church was cmpleted had many respnsibilities such as treasurer, secretary, and parchial schl bard (nw bible schl). Prbably his mst significant rle was that f Klkker. A Klkker was a man wh read the pening and clsing prayers f the church service and led the singing. Withut printed music r instruments much diversity arse as t hw the hymns were sung. Jhn and his wife Anna Lien lived nrth f the Suth Zumbr church where the rad ends. Jhn and Anna s daughter, Mrs. Annby, later described their first hme. It was an earth cabin, r dugut sixteen feet square. It was in a small suth hill. It was earth n three sides and in frnt had a dr and tw windws. The rf was earth. We had a Nrwegian chest as a table, tw benches, tw chairs and ld fur sided ven t make fd. In the beginning we made rails n the earth flr with sme straw inside fr beds. Here we lived until 1861 r 62. Then father (Jhn) built a huse. These early settlers hmes were difficult t live in but were cl in summer and warm in winter. They were safe frm fire and substantial enugh t last fr a number f years. In these huses families cked, ate and slept. Similar shelters were prvided fr the family's animals. In 1878 a meeting was held t rganize the Suth Zumbr Ladies Aid Sciety later called WELCA and nw Ww. This meeting was held in Jhn and Anna s hme where Anna was elected as the first president. Jhn and Anna are the great, great grandparents f Suth Zumbr members Stuart Byum, Rbert Byum and Pauline Tvedt. Jhn and Anna are buried in Suth Zumbr s cemetery. Jhn s Bible will be n display at Suth Zumbr during the celebratin f ur 150th year. What D I Say? Hw Can I Help? Mst f us have knwn smene with sme frm f dementia perhaps a grandparent, smene we wrked with r went t church with, a friend. The ne difficulty we recgnize is that Alzheimer s disease and ther dementias gradually diminish a persn s ability t cmmunicate. S what can we d? What can we say? Hw can we help? Changes in the ability t cmmunicate can vary and are based n the persn and where each ne is in the disease prcess. Prblems we can expect t see include: Difficulty finding the right wrds Using familiar wrds repeatedly Describing familiar bjects rather than calling them by name Easily lsing a train f thught Difficulty rganizing wrds lgically Reverting t speaking a native language (Nrwegian!?) Speaking less ften Relying n gestures mre than speaking S what d we say? Hw can we help? Cmmunicatin with a persn with dementia requires patience, understanding, and gd listening skills. Peple with dementia are still able t participate in meaningful cnversatin and engage in scial activities. Hwever, they may repeat stries r feel verwhelmed by excessive stimulatin f a big crwd (church). We can t make assumptins. We need t include peple in cnversatins with small grups f thers in a quiet space with minimal distractins. We need t cntinue practicing all f the gd habits ur parents taught us speak directly t the persn if we want t knw hw they are ding, feeling, and what they may need help with. Lk them straight in the eye. It shws we care abut what he r she is saying. Then take time t listen. We need t give the persn time t respnd and think abut what they want t say. Dn t interrupt r finish sentences unless he r she asks fr help finding a wrd r finishing a sentence. What d we say if we realize that we have been aviding cntact r cnversatin with a lved ne? Hw can we help? Start with what we knw. Des he have any particular likes r dislikes? What was his previus emplyment--a farmer, a teacher? Des she have a garden? What are her interests r hbbies? Des he like animals? Ask yes r n questins rather than pen ended questins. Ask ne questin at a time. Perhaps talk abut what he r she is still cmfrtable ding and what they may need help with. Repeat r restate what was said t clarify it. Be patient and supprtive. Offering reassurance can encurage the persn t explain his r her thughts. T help demnstrate a difficult r frgtten task, give visual cues. Reach fr the drawer handle r tuch the silverware t demnstrate the next task (setting table). Offer step by step instructins fr tasks such as, First then. Visit with them abut a lcal newspaper article r share a meaningful scripture frm ur One Year Bible. Perhaps Jhn 15:12-13, This is my cmmandment, that yu lve ne anther as I have lved yu. Greater lve has n ne than this, than t lay dwn ne s life fr his friends. Perhaps this means giving up ur time, ur schedule, r ur expectatins fr a lved ne with dementia. Avid arguing. If the persn says smething we dn t agree with, let it be. Find smething t agree with. Ask them t visit the garden r take a walk t the park. Play a game r cards if they like, d a puzzle, read a shrt stry, r watch a mvie tgether. Use all f the senses smells, sights (pictures), sunds (music), taste (meals), tuch (hugs, hld hands) t cnnect. Yur Faith Cmmunity Nurse, Cindy Bernards Hspital Plicy If yu are hspitalized in Rchester r knw f smene frm Suth Zumbr wh is, please cntact the church and let us knw abut the hspitalizatin.
