PERSONAL FITNESS MINISTRY Personal Fitness is the health of a person s mind, body and spirit. Since Holland s does an excellent job of building a person s spiritual fitness through Bible study and mission work, this Fitness Ministry will focus on building one s mind and body. Initially, this fitness ministry will be 4-6 weeks and meet in a classroom once per week. Topics of discussion will be: maintaining a person s mental sharpness, keeping oneself physically fit, and nutritional aspects related to our daily lives. There is plenty of scripture that relates to us caring for our bodies. The focus of this ministry is to cut through all the mis-information that is dispensed through various media outlets. At this point in time, we will not be actively participating in any type of exercise, but exercise will be discussed. The ministry will begin Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 6:30 pm, and each class will last approximately an hour and a half. Where we will meet will be determined at a later date. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the narthex after the fall barbeque has been completed. This class is for college age and up. It may also be valuable for those with young children, in learning ways to keep physically active, and still grow in necessary skills. Contact Chris Gross cakk144_bellsouth.net. 4

Thank the Lord for the 124 million children who have received shoebox gifts in Jesus Name since 1993. Please prepare your shoebox gift and bring it to any of the three worship services on Sunday, November 15. Brochures and shoeboxes can be found in the narthex. October Missionary of the Month Evelyn Banks-Shackelford Location: Evelyn Banks-Shackelford is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as a Church and Community Worker (CCW) with the Marianna Larger Parish in Arkansas. Emphasis and Impact: Church and Community Workers respond to God s call to ministry among the poor and disenfranchised in rural and urban areas throughout the United States. They work to change the social inequities of poverty, racial injustice, and domestic violence. Ms. Banks serves five churches in these Arkansas Delta communities, which are familiar surroundings for Evelyn, as her grandparents raised her on a family farm. Evelyn s Motivation: Evelyn says of her ministry, My work reflects God s mission in the world as it relates to empowering people to help themselves, to enable them to meet their daily basic needs. It gives me an opportunity to advocate for the vulnerable people in the community the elderly, youth, young mothers, and the disabled helping them to connect to resources. 11
HOLLAND S YOUTH OCTOBER 2015 To invite and equip youth to boldly follow Christ for the transformation of the world. What is Orange? ORANGE IS SIMPLE. Holland s Youth Contact Information Susan Wright, Director of Youth & Children's Ministries-Holland s United Methodist Church susan@hollandsumc.org (919) 772-5294 (919) 931-3541 www.hollandsumc.org/youth IT S A STRATEGY. It starts with two individual influences in a child s life: Alone, these two work hard to ensure that every child has a BETTER FUTURE. But when they re COMBINED, the home (red for love) and church (yellow for light) will have a GREATER IMPACT. And that is ORANGE. The Rethink Group creates curriculum resources for babies and preschoolers, elementary children, middle and high school youth, and college students. The curriculum for youth is called XP3. XP3 exists to help youth experience three things: wonder for who God is, discovery of who He created them to be, and passion for loving others. Everything we offer is designed to help youth begin to take ownership of their faith through these three basic truths: I will love God because He will never stop loving me. I will follow Jesus because He knows me better than I know myself. I will live out God s story so others can know who Jesus is. Holland s Youth uses the XP3 curriculum for many of our UMYF Sunday evening programs. There is a Parent- Cue that I send to parents prior to the Sunday evening before the 1st session in a program series. The Parent Cue will explain what the youth will be learning and will provide suggestions for parent/youth interaction around the particular topic. I hope parents find the information useful in their own families spiritual journey. Youth Bible Study Beginning On Wednesday, September 16, at 6:30 after the Wednesday Night Live supper, there is Bible study for youth in grades 6-12. We will meet in Room 101. Come learn about God s great love! 12
