Holy Humor Sunday comes from a very old Christian custom. The humor comes from early church fathers like Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Gregory of Nyssa, who preached that God played the ultimate joke on Satan by raising Jesus from the dead. God got the last laugh. More recently, Protestant theologian Jurgen Moltmann, wrote that Easter is "the laughing of the redeemed, the dancing of the liberated." In the Greek and Slavic Orthodox tradition, Easter Monday turned into Bright Week, and was a time of great joy and laughter, celebration over the resurrection of Christ and the renewal of the spiritual life of the peo- ple. In the early days of Christianity, all of Easter Week was a feast and celebration, with special festivities: Easter games, Emmaus walks in the country, picnics, pranks and practical jokes. In many countries of Europe, pastors and parishioners would drench" one another with water, youngsters would process in outlandish costumes, people would give children Easter eggs, pastries and sweets. In some cities, people would spray perfume on one another with friendly wishes for happiness, or the men would heave the women up high on chairs while shouting hurrahs www.thejoyfulnoiseletter.com Humor becomes holy when we recognize God in between our aspirations and our limitations, ready to laugh with us, and heal us."
