The Keys to Committed Faith (Luke 19:36, Matthew 27:15-23) by Rev. Dan McDowell April 14, 2019 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. (Luke 19:36) 15 Now it was the governor s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah? 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him. 19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge s seat, his wife sent him this message: Don t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him. 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. 21 Which of the two do you want me to release to you? asked the governor. Barabbas, they answered.

22 What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah? Pilate asked. They all answered, Crucify him! 23 Why? What crime has he committed? asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Crucify him! (Matthew 27:15-23) A little boy was sick on Palm Sunday and stayed home from church with his mother. His father returned from church holding a palm branch. The little boy was curious and asked, "Why do you have that palm branch, dad?" "You see, when Jesus came into town, everyone waved Palm Branches to honor him, so we got Palm Branches today." The little boy replied, Wouldn t you know it! I miss church one Sunday and Jesus shows up!" Today as you know is Palm Sunday; the day when a whole city threw a parade for Jesus. As Jesus rode into the city, the people threw Palm branches in anticipation of his coming. Thus we get our word Palm Sunday. It was a day of celebration when Jesus was the worshipped and praised. It was a very special day for Him! Of course it is Bittersweet for us because even as we read of the celebration we know that Good Friday is coming. The crucifixion is coming. We know that many in this same crowd will within a few short days exchange words of praise to words of

condemnation and death; shouting Hosanna! Hosanna! and then later shouting Crucify Him! Crucify Him! Part One: Two Encounters with Jesus This morning I want to focus our attention on two encounters both of which focused upon Jesus, but with two different results. The late, great evangelist, Billy Graham, was quoted many times as saying that the greatest mission field in our country to today is in the local church; people already attending our churches. I am not sure whether this statement is true or not, but one thing that I do know is that many people know what to say, how to say it, even how to act in certain ways, but when the rubber truly meets that road, there is no personal relationship with Jesus Christ. No life-changing, ongoing encounters with Him. We see a perfect example of this in our two passages this morning. On Sunday Jesus rode into the city with the people shouting praises and praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. On Friday they are shouting give us Barabbas, We want him, Crucify Jesus Crucify Him. Why the change? Well there are several possible reasons, but one simple reason is that their words did not match their hearts. They sought Jesus for what He could do for them. They had an agenda and they wanted Jesus to fulfill their desires nationally and politically. They had religion but they completely missed the mark on who Jesus really was even though He brought something beyond their wildest dreams and expectations! So how can we have a committed faith? How can we be real and sincere and consistent in our approach to Jesus? This morning I want to offer you some keys to such a faith.

The first Key is that a committed faith is not self-centered it is Christ- Centered. This sounds obvious, but we often miss it. In America, we tend to say, Hey God, here is my calendar, here is my agenda. Now I can squeeze you in here or here. Pulling God out or turning to God only when it is convenient or useful. In our passage, the people praised Jesus as He passed by, but they praised him for two reasons. First, because of his miracles. He had healed the sick, raised the dead They praised Him because he was serving them and Second, because they were hoping for deliverance from the Romans- To be set free from Rome as Israel was set free from Egypt. Their praise was tempered with the attitude of Jesus what can you do for me. A few days later they saw a beaten and disfigured Jesus- A man who no longer looked like a deliverer or a conqueror. And as words were said about him, they bought into all the lies and quickly changed their position. For them it was all about Me, Me, Me. There is a legend about an ancient village in Spain. The villagers learned that the king would pay a visit! In a thousand years, a king had never come to that village. Excitement grew! "We must throw a big celebration," The villagers all agreed. But, it was a poor village, and there weren t many resources. Someone came up with a classic idea. Since many of the villagers made their own wines, the idea was for everyone in the village bring a large cup of their choice wine to the town square, We ll pour it into a large vat and offer it to the king for his pleasure! When the king draws wine to drink, it will be the very best he s ever tasted!

The day before the king s arrival, hundreds of people lined up to make their offering to the honored guest. They climbed a small stairway, and poured their gift through a small opening at the top. Finally, the vat was full! The King arrived, was escorted to the square, given a silver cup and was told to draw some wine, which represented the best the villagers had. He placed the cup under the spigot, turned the handle, and then drank the wine, but it was nothing more than water. You see every villager reasoned, "I ll withhold my best wine and substitute water, what with so many cups of wine in the vat, the king will never know the difference!" The problem was, everyone thought the same thing, and the king was greatly dishonored. True faith is a faith of submission and sacrifice. It looks beyond our own wants and needs to something far greater than ourselves. When we come back we will talk about two more ways that true faith is identified. Part Two: The Measure of True Faith Today, Palm Sunday 2019 choose to honor our great King, Jesus Christ by giving him our very best. Withholding nothing Giving him our all. A second key is that a committed faith is relationship driven. Many of those who gathered to throw their coats and palm branches onto the street and who shouted praises did so because it was popular at the time. In that one brief moment it was trendy. Perhaps some began doing it with sincere motives, but others just did it because others were doing it. Later at the trial, shouting crucify Him was the thing to do. In fact for a brief moment it was the trendy thing to do to make a mass murderer and criminal their hero when they shouted we want Barabbas.

What was the difference between those who were walking alongside and behind Jesus on Palm Sunday and those who were standing along the street, shouting praises and throwing down palm branches? The crowd welcoming Jesus was distant from him, not only physically but in terms of their relationship with Him. They were welcoming an image perhaps even an ideal rather than a real, flesh and blood person. The disciples of Jesus knew Jesus on a much deeper level. They had seen his struggles and frustrations They had a closer view of Jesus heart. In our own lives a committed faith comes only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. One where every day is fresh and new as he personally directs our steps. That only comes from spending time in His Word and by opening our minds and hearts through prayer. It only comes when we invest ourselves far beyond the surface level. It is the difference between wearing a cross necklace or even a cross tattoo, and genuinely carrying His cross of sacrifice and discipleship. Truly following Jesus means giving ourselves to Him. It means dedicating our time, talents and material treasures to His service. In order to have a committed faith we must develop and maintain a personal relationship with Jesus. I recently read the true story about a preacher who was standing at the door shaking hands as the congregation departed. He grabbed one man by the hand and pulled him aside. The preacher said to him, Are you ready to join the Army of the Lord? The man replied, "I m already in that Army, Preacher. Then why don t I see you except for Christmas and Easter? He whispered back, I m in the secret service. Several years ago, I heard about a young man who d just been called up to deployment in Iraq during the war. The problem was he didn t want to go. He explained that he

hadn t joined the army to go to war. He had joined because of the benefits: salary, room and board, college tuition, insurance, etc. Of course everyone knows that one of the primary functions of the military is to prepare for war. You ve got to know that if you sign up! It s right there in the job description. Armies do NOT exist to pass out benefits, armies exists to deal with conflicts, defend their people and overcome the enemy. But there are people who actually join up hoping for a free ride. And that kind of mentality undermines the military of any nation. The same kind of mentality can also undermine a church. Too often believers sign up for the benefits. They expect Jesus to "be there" for them, but they don t expect to "be there" for Him. That s the issue Jesus is addressing here. He s explaining to His disciples that they re part of His army. He has called them to war, and there s a decision to be made. Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. (Matthew 16:24-25) A third Key is that committed faith is not swayed or blocked by our personal trials and crises. At the parade it was trendy to offer praise. Everyone was doing it. At the trial speaking out for Jesus was risky. Possibly even life threatening.

Many of us come to Jesus expecting everything to go well. Maybe some problems but not too many. So when the bottom drops out for us we often ask God why? We think it is not supposed to happen this way. If your faith is based on your circumstances it will never be genuine. It will always be casual. I have gone to some really great Christian events like Billy Graham crusades, Promise Keepers Conferences and Pastors Conventions. Some of them packed football stadiums and the praises for God rocked the entire arena! Imagine a football stadium filled with 60,000 men singing to God at the top of their lungs and with all of their hearts! When returning home while everyone is still glowing from worship, it begins to dawn on us that tomorrow we will face the real world again. We go home to our families and our schools and workplaces in a world that is not all praising God with joy. We face a world that is mocking and laughing at God and His ways and is often angry that God is on His throne. A committed faith takes the good with the bad. Knowing that all we are ever promised is that in the midst of both our good and bad; Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us. He will stand with us. A story is told of A little girl who while walking in a garden noticed a particularly beautiful flower. She admired its beauty and enjoyed its fragrance. It s so pretty! she exclaimed. As she gazed on it, her eyes followed the stem down to the soil in which it grew. This flower is too pretty to be planted in such dirt! she cried. So she pulled it up by its roots and ran to the water faucet to wash away the soil. It wasn t long until the flower wilted and died.

When the gardener saw what the little girl had done, he exclaimed, You destroyed my finest plant! I m sorry, but I didn t like it in that dirt, she said. The gardener replied, I chose that spot and mixed the soil because I knew that only there could it grow to be a beautiful flower. God has placed us exactly where we are. We must trust him. In trusting Him we eventually see that He is using our pressures, trials, and difficulties to bring us to a new degree of spiritual beauty. True Contentment comes when we accept what God is doing and thank Him for it. As you reflect on that this morning is your faith casual or committed? As we approach this week where our Jesus suffered incredibly for us. In A week where our sins, past, present, and future were the nails that hung him on that cross doesn t Jesus deserve a second look. Doesn t he deserve total control of your life? Doesn t he deserve a personal relationship with you? This week consider it all and choose to give it all to him
