Minister s Letter Dear Friends, In 2005, I was part of a team of 10 people who journeyed through the States and streets of the USA from Los Angeles to New York Ground Zero. We walked, cycled and carried the cross over a time period of five and a half weeks. One morning I was getting my bike ready, usual stuff and then did my test ride up and down the camp site, while testing the brakes I unfortunately flipped upside down. I hurt my hands and then faced a crowd in embarrassment. I quickly got up, dusted myself and with the help of a friend I was back on my bike. Have you ever fallen down? Maybe you were learning to ride a bike or running and stumbled. Maybe you were walking in the woods and tripped over a rock or a root of a tree. Depending on the situation you were in, it probably did not feel very good, this was probably unexpected. You may have some bumps and bruises from the impact of the fall. If others saw you fall, it may have even been quite embarrassing. It probably wasn't something that you would tweet about or announce on Face Book. We have all experienced a fall of some kind in our lives. We have all been there. Chances are pretty good too, that in the very near future, we might experience another unexpected fall. It happens. It's life. But we get back up again. It happens in our spiritual lives as well. We all make mistakes. Whether you are a Presbyter, Minister, Sunday School teacher, steward, secretary, musician, mow the church lawn, balance the church's bank account, clean the church, or run sound, some may fall down or get side tracked and it doesn't feel good either, it's usually an unexpected fall. Sometimes, others see us in this fallen state and it can be embarrassing. It's not something we want everyone to know about. We can get easily discouraged, the enemy would love for us to stay down and be discouraged. He loves to see us make mistakes and cherishes the moments that we fall flat on our faces over traps he has laid in our paths. However, not only does he love to see us fall, his ultimate goal is for us to stay down and what a laugh, when we finally throw in the towel and give it all up. When it seems we have no more strength to fight for righteousness anymore. The enemy loves this season of our lives, however, the Bible says; "Rejoice not against me, oh mine enemy, when I fall I shall arise." (Micah 7:8) Let us get up, dust ourselves, whatever our short falls, discouragements, disappointments, whatever, we should not lose sight of the big picture in advancing the Kingdom of God. As the Central Norfolk Circuit, let us all carry one another allowing the weak to dust up and catch up. Life s journey is like a speed train ride, you pass through many lonely and deserted stations along the way. Sometimes there are crowded platforms with people you don t know and strangers who may not quickly become close travelling companions. Along the way there are dark tunnels, but beyond them, sunlight and blue skies. As we grow older the train seems to gather speed and we look forward to reaching our destination with the certainty that we will receive a great welcome into eternity. Wouldn t you like to be a team player in this eternal journey? We can do it. Cheerio. Manny Pillay Take the sweetness of God, who alone can satisfy your hunger. Delia Smith. 2

From the Editor s desk. It is February again and we are looking forward to spring and the flowers showing through in our gardens, to Lent and to Easter. It is also the time of year when Margaret Smith who produced the Newsletter in the FW&H circuit used to put an envelope with CNCN and ask for your contributions towards its cost. I follow her practice and have stapled an envelope to this Newsletter to enable you to make a contribution if you wish. Each copy costs the circuit just over 20p and there are 6 copies in the year. I believe that in 2012, your contributions covered nearly ¾ of the total cost and I personally feel that this Newsletter is more value to the person in the pew than is the Plan and it is worth our paying for. If you wish to contribute 1.20 or so, please seal it in the envelope and put it in the offertory for your church treasurer to send to the Circuit treasurer. He or she, may actually like to send, say, 1.20 for each Newsletter sent to your church in advance of your contributions. May I just say that I feel it is an honour to produce this Newsletter for you and I enjoy being able to encourage you all to support your neighbouring churches and so increase the way we can spread God s love to others around us. Our chapels are not here for us, the church, to be more comfortable in them but for us to use as a base for us to work for the community around us. One thing is more certain now than ever and that is that the world is in a sorry state because it is forgetting God and it needs desperately to hear of him from us. PLEASE REMEMBER. Send dates and news for up to 2 nd June to me by Sunday 10 th March at belaw@tiscali.co.uk or at 8 Edinburgh Close, Watton, IP25 6XJ. Every blessing. Brian Lawrence Important MWiB information: Date 12-14 April 2013. Venue - Swanwick conference centre, Derbyshire. Cost - 160 LETTERS & NEWS: To all Methodist Women from Rev Jenny Pathmarajah Dear Sisters Fancy a holiday away from the stresses and strains of family/home/church life? Come with me to this years MWiB retreat. If you've never been on one, they are brilliant. It's a chance to relax, engage spiritually, learn new crafts, make loads of new friends and enjoy wonderful food and surroundings. Inspired by this year s Methodist Prayer Handbook, this year's residential conference will explore some of the chasms we experience in our lives, as individuals, in communities, as a worldwide family. The theme will be approached in worship, bible study, prayer, discussion, presentations, workshops and creative space. We will wrestle with issues like: Is a chasm a frightening prospect or an opportunity? One person s chasm may be another person s small step. How do we cross the chasms of life and faith? There will also be time to make or renew friendships, to relax together or find quiet space, to share in conversation and to visit the Market Place. The keynote facilitator for the weekend will be Rev. Katei Kirby, Belonging together Partnership Officer, the Methodist Church with a variety of workshops led by a team of resource people. It will be a super weekend for many reasons, one of which is the musical director this year is.-.yours truly. It was a sell out last year, so get your applications in quickly. They can be downloaded from the internet and if pooters (see my attempt at a Norfolk accent?!) make you shudder, just ask me or Janet Roebuck and we will print off a form and send it to you. If there are a few of us going, we can car pool and organise transport together. There are bursaries available if you've never attend a MWiB conference before. There is no excuse! It will be a super weekend! 3

Dear friends Car Pooling Request; from Rev Jenny Pathmarajah Many of you will have noticed the increase of Section Services and Circuit Services. This is a wonderful part of our heritage in Methodism and those who have been able to make these services have all been enthusiastic about the worship and how good it is to praise God together. However, sometimes the heart is willing but the transport it weak. It doesn t take Sherlock to notice that we are a large Circuit in a rural area and many of our chapels are scattered with poor transport facilities on a Sunday. After some pastoral conversations, we understand that often people are keen to attend, but they don t drive or can t afford taxis or simply the buses don t run to that chapel. We also know how hard it is to ask for a lift and sometimes, we just don t know who to ask. So, we d like to try and help fix this. If you are a driver and would like to be delighted by interesting conversation on the way to a Circuit or Section service and would be willing to drive a little bit out of your way to pick someone up, we d like to hear from you! The way we see it working is like this: We d like to provide a list of names to chapels of people willing to be approached to be asked for a lift to services. This doesn t tie you down to attending every event, it just means that you don t mind being asked. You re still entitled to say no and I m sure those who would contact you would be happy to help pay for the petrol cost. We would ask you to give us your name and number and a radius of how far you are happy to travel. Make sense? Hope so! My name is Jenny, my number is 01263 712181, email revjennypath@aol.co.uk and I m happy to drive up to 7 miles out of my way to pick anyone up. If this is something you d like to take part in, get in touch with me. Thank you Rev Jenny Pathmarajah OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD 596 gift boxes were sent by the Circuit in November 2012 to deprived children in third world countries in Africa and Eastern Europe though Operation Christmas Child. Litcham Church sent 306 boxes, collecting them from their church, and from Dereham, Swaffham, Fakenham, Gressenhall, Tittleshall and Wendling churches. Watton Church sent 185 boxes from their church and town, from Hingham, Gt Ellingham and Shipdham churches and Ashill Primary School. Saham Hills Church, (Diane Pengelly) sent 105 boxes from the Church and local community. I have tried not to leave anyone out here. This is a splendid effort and if other churches would like to take part in this worth while work, could they contact Stephen Lynn. Brian Lawrence 9

Message from Rev Andrew King: Day-trip to London Ordinations Dear Friends Many of you will know that we are fortunate in having two probationer ministers in our Circuit. One of the greatest joys in having a probationer is the chance to share in their ordination. Ordination is the culmination when probationers after years of testing, calling, training, discernment and sacrifice; with the Church who has tested, trained, nurtured and sent ministers into circuit; join together for the affirmation of and confirmation of all these things, bless them through prayer and the laying on of hands. It s a wonderful celebration and a chance to celebrate our Connexionalism as Methodists. This year, Rev Jenny Pathmarajah will be ordained at Surbiton Hill Methodist Church, Surrey at 5.00pm on Sunday 7 th July. As a Circuit we have watched her grow and develop as a minister who we are proud to send off to be ordained. As a Circuit, many of us will want to be at Jenny s ordination to support her and be a part of a wonderful and moving service. Ordination Services are highly sought after and consequently are ticketed. We will be organising transport as a Circuit to go down to the service. If you would like to join us, you are most welcome and we invite you to put your name forward to Jenny or me. We can t apply on mass for tickets as a Circuit, because each application is limited to 4 tickets only. If you are willing to apply for tickets either on phone or online, please let your minister know as well. If we know how many people are interested now and who are willing to apply for tickets, we can make certain that everyone is covered. The deadline is Sunday 3 rd March.
