Brown Sentence from Scripture Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength, and you shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Mark 12:29 31 Today s Collect God of peace, you taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength: by the power of your Spirit lift us to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 2

A reading from the Book of Ruth: chapter 1, beginning at the 1 st verse. 1 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. 3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. When they had lived there for about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Chilion also died, so that the woman was left without her two sons or her husband. 6 Then she started to return with her daughters-in-law from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had had consideration for his people and given them food. 7 So she set out from the place where she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of Judah. 8 But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go back each of you to your mother s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9 The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband. Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud. 10 They said to her, No, we will return with you to your people. 11 But Naomi said, Turn back, my daughters, why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? 12 Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I should have a husband tonight and bear sons, 13 would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, it has been far more bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has turned against me. 14 Then they wept aloud again. Orpah kissed her mother-inlaw, but Ruth clung to her. 15 So she said, See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law. 16 But Ruth said, Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from 3

following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die, I will die there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you! 18 When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 146 1 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul: while I live I will praise the Lord; 2 While I have any being: I will sing praises to my God. 3 Put not your trust in princes: nor in flesh and blood, which cannot save. 4 For when their breath goes from them, they return again to the earth: and on that day all their thoughts perish. 5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob: whose hope is in the Lord their God, 6 The God who made heaven and earth: the sea, and all that is in them, 7 Who keeps faith for ever: who deals justice to those that are oppressed. 8 The Lord gives food to the hungry: and sets the captives free. 9 The Lord gives sight to the blind: the Lord lifts up those that are bowed down. 10 The Lord loves the righteous: the Lord cares for the stranger in the land. 11 He upholds the widow and the fatherless: as for the way of the wicked, he turns it upside down. 12 The Lord shall be king for ever: your God, O Zion, shall reign through all generations. Praise the Lord. 4

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Chapter 9, beginning at the 11 th verse. 11 But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), 12 he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! 15 For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, because a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions under the first covenant. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark. Chapter 12, beginning at the 13 th verse. 13 Then they sent to him some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. 14 And they came and said to him, Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? 15 Should we pay them, or should we not? But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it. 16 And they brought one. Then he said to them, Whose head is this, and whose title? They answered, The emperor s. 17 Jesus said to them, Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor s, and to God the things that are God s. And they were utterly amazed at him. 28 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he 5

answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? 29 Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is this, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 32 Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; 33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbour as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burntofferings and sacrifices. 34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question. For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Cooperating Parish Arrangement with St Aidan s Everybody who is eligible to vote at our upcoming Annual General Meeting in November should have received a letter from me providing information about the proposed Cooperating Parish Arrangement with St Aidan s Strathmore, which parishioners from both parishes will be asked to vote on at their respective AGM s. Copies of the Cooperating Parish Arrangement are available for you to take home this morning. This document provides the specific details of 9

the Arrangement which will hopefully answer some or all of the questions that you might have in relation to the Arrangement. If anyone has a question about any aspect of the Arrangement then please feel free to ask me at any time in the lead up to the AGM so that you feel well informed to cast your vote either for or against the Arrangement. If you would prefer, you can also write a question (or a comment) and leave it in the Parish Suggestion Box located on the table at the back of the church. Spiritual Reflection Reconciliation All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 Reconciliation is the act of bringing former protagonists to a peaceful accord. The notion of reconciliation is at the heart of the gospel. The apostle Paul s letter to the Christians in Rome includes a classic account of God s act of reconciliation through Jesus Christ. Humankind is estranged from God, Paul explains, and it is God s self-sacrificing act of love that brings about our reconciliation. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son. Paul describes humankind in rather unflattering terms. He says we are weak ungodly sinners and enemies of God. Yet this does not stop God from proving his love for us. Indeed, our very state of being estranged, being the weak ungodly sinners we are, compels God to reach out to us through his supreme act of sacrificial love. Paul reminds us God s ways are not our ways. While Christ gives us unconditionally the full measure of his devotion, we tend to condition our love on the worthiness of the recipient. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. 10

This is the model we are to follow when we seek reconciliation with those from whom we are estranged. If you bring your gift to the altar, Jesus admonishes us, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. The phrase your brother has something against you implies we have wronged our brother. We somehow have offended or insulted him and so he is filled with resentment. A spirit of enmity has developed. Before we can worship God, we must first be reconciled to the one from whom we are estranged. And how are we to do this? Through an act of selfsacrificing love, not conditioned on the worthiness of our brother but motivated solely by our desire to be reconciled. We have a glimpse of this mandate in Christ s commissioning of his first disciples. Our Lord has compassion for the crowds who come to him, but he recognises he cannot possibly minister to all their needs. So he commissions the followers of his way, people like you and me, to carry his work forward, proclaiming the good news of God s love for all of humankind. In issuing his commission, Jesus enjoins his followers: You received without payment; give without payment. You and I are reconciled to God through no worthiness of our own, and we should seek reconciliation with others on the same basis. God s grace is freely given to us, acquired without payment on our part, and we are to pass it on likewise, expecting nothing in return.. Rawls, James J.
