FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY January 31 ST, 2016~9:30 A.M. Welcome to Faith United Methodist Church. It is our heart and desire to engage the community of Waseca with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, equip those who respond to be the next generation of disciples of Jesus Christ and empower them to go into the world as partners with God for the healing of the world. NEWS OF OUR FAITH COMMUNITY/ WELCOME PASSING OF THE PEACE * CALL TO WORSHIP... " Praise the Name of Jesus"...TFWS No. 2066 LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE L: God, our loving Father, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, into this world to counter all the forces of evil: sin, suffering and death, and to overcome evil with the force of good; hatred with the power of love, your great love for us in Jesus. All: Help us never to curse the darkness, but to join with you in bringing your light into this world, the light that is your Son, born of the Virgin Mary, in Bethlehem. L: Help us to be instruments of your light and love by doing one special act of kindness or by being your special instrument of reconciliation this New Year. All: May the Christ Candle we light symbolize our desire to bring light into a world of darkness and hope into a world of despair. L: We ask this through Christ our LORD. All: Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE... O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing...vs.1-4...UMH No. 57 1

OPENING PRAYER...[UNISON] Almighty and everlasting God, who dost govern all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully hear the prayer of your people, and in our time grant us thy peace; through Jesus Christ our LORD, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE..."Spirit of the Living God"...UMH No. 393 RESPONSIVE READING...Psalm 71:1-8 L: In you, O LORD, I have taken shelter! Never let me be humiliated! Vindicate me by rescuing me! Listen to me! Deliver me! All: Be my protector and refuge, a stronghold where I can be safe! For you are my high ridge and my stronghold. L: My God, rescue me from the power of the wicked, from the hand of the cruel oppressor! All: For you give me confidence, O LORD; O LORD, I have trusted in you since I was young. L: I have leaned on you since birth; you pulled me from my mother s womb. I praise you continually. All: Many are appalled when they see me, but you are my secure shelter. L: I praise you constantly and speak of your splendor all day long. All: Thanks Be to God. ANTHEM..."Standing and Leaning "...Faith Choir KID S TIME... God has a word for you! SUNDAY SCHOOL All children are invited to attend Sunday School at this time. Please go to the back of the sanctuary to meet your teacher. SCRIPTURE READINGS... Luke 4:16-30 Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 2

The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the LORD s favor. Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to tell them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read. All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said, Isn t this Joseph s son? Jesus said to them, No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, Physician, heal yourself! and say, What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too. And he added, I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah s days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land. Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. But he passed through the crowd and went on his way. L: THIS IS THE WORD OF GOD FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD. All: THANKS BE TO GOD. PRAYERS FOR OUR CHURCH AND OUR COMMUNITY MESSAGE...
