CONTENT A Broad Theology of Justice Biblical / Religious Influences on Gender A Deepening / Widening of our Theology of Gender Who does it speak to? Who does it speak for?

JUSTICE A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE We are called to seek Justice and to love Justice because it comes from God and belongs to God. Jubilee was a law that demanded the pardoning of debt and the returning of land every 50 years. This was a safeguard to minimise the gap between the richest and the poorest that all may flourish. (acquiring too much created as much of a disconnect as losing too much.) The Torah Rules were clear on how to treat others leave the edges of your field for others to glean, tithe for the benefit of the poor.

Modern Day Gleaning: Madagascar

PROPHETIC OUTCRY Prophets provides a vision of an alternative, more just society. Isaiah 58 cries out against the hypocrites who zealously follow their religious practices without realising that the way they are living is completely at odds with what they are praying for. The prophets questioned the structures and practices many took for granted. Throughout the whole Bible and more specifically the Prophetic Books, Justice can be defined as Fidelity to the demands of a Relationship.

TZADEQAH & MISHPAT Frequently in Scripture, Tzadeqah (a life of right relationships ) and Mishpat (Justice ) are placed alongside one another. Where relationships become distorted, injustice flourishes.

GENDER A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE Question: How is religion involved in gender oppression? Answer: Religion has shaped social norms that reinforce gender oppression.

SILENCE! The sound of silence 1 Corinthians 14: 34-36 As in all the churches of the saints, women should be silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as the law also says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?

SILENCE! 1 Timothy 2:12 For I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through child bearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.

QUIET ACCEPTANCE 1 Peter 2: 23, 3: 1-2 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. Wives, in the same way, accept the authority of your husbands, so that, even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives conduct.

THE LIFE OF JESUS Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God and love your neighbour,. He then went on to challenge any tribal notions of a neighbour by including women, the marginalised, foreigners and enemies in the who to love category. The borders around our call to love were dismantled.

WHOSE STORY IS TOLD? Mark 14: 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.

DEEPENING OUR THEOLOGY OF GENDER Involves increasing our understanding of Gender as a gift and a source of Life and exploring ways to see this truth become a reality that is embedded in all strata of faith, justice and society. As faith explores what it means to be fully human, faith with a gender justice lens, explores what it is to be fully human.

WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD A RADICAL FAITH.. Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1: 26-27

WHAT SCRIPTURES WILL HOLD PRECEDENCE? There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ. Galatians 3:28

WHO CAN IMAGE GOD? Luke 13: 20-21 And again he said, To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.

What would it..mean to experience our being gendered as gift rather than danger, a source of life and hope rather than of oppression or fear?. -Of the same flesh: a theology of gender. Christian Aid 2014

KEY QUESTIONS: Which texts have authority, and why? Why is gender justice at the centre of the Christian faith? How do we amplify the original and defining theology of male and female and end the power of silence?

Visible barriers in the faith community Visible power structures in faith communities.. Who leads? Who speaks? Who writes? Who prays? Who shapes the faith? Invisible barriers in the faith community accepted practice.. what seems normal the language we use.. the roles we inhabit.. the scriptures we read.. the way we understand God..

THE WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY JOHN 8:1-11 Violence is learned and is used to maintain the status quo. It uses social norms, culture, law and the privilege of power positions. It also uses hiddenness, closed doors. It is the face of the devil: dia-bolas = division. Dogmas are being used to strengthen unjust systems instead of challenging them in order to bring healing, restoration and redemption. We are called to follow Jesus, not the law or any interpretation of that law. Jesus suspended moral judgement and defended life.

THEOLOGY OF GENDER. Involves a constant critique of standard normal practises. Who are our voices, our bodies, our structures, our prayers, helping? Those who wanted to stone the woman? Or the woman? Who are we challenging? What systems are we upholding? GBV in Ireland happening in our churches. 1 in 5 women.

GENDER BASED VIOLENCE A physical manifestation of an embedded, structural inequality / injustice Not about anger, it s about distorted relationships. Cambodia, Bolivia, Brazil, DRC, Ireland

PRAYER O God, Who makes us male and female in your image, Show us how to live with one another with profound respect, In joyful celebration and for shared justice, So that all your people, in every home and in every place, May rejoice that we are of the same flesh. In the name of Jesus, The first one of a new humankind, Amen.
