We give thanks to God for these men and women who give their lives to make Christ visible through their witness, their prayer and their service. In his message for this day, Pope Francis tells us we are all called to be missionaries of the Gospel, men and women touched and transformed by the joy of God s love, who cannot keep this experience just to ourselves. Just as Christ has touched our hearts and minds, so too should we be inspired to invite others to consider a call to be a priest, brother or sister. In a special way, I respectfully ask parents and grandparents to encourage your children and grandchildren to be open to God s call and to assure them of your willingness to support them in their discernment. May we be united in our prayer for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life within our Church and diocese, and in our commitment to help others hear and respond to God s call in their lives. A Prayer for Vocations Lord Jesus, we ask You to choose from our parish, homes, schools and colleges an abundant harvest of apostles for Your kingdom: Priests, brothers and sisters. O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, teach all those the Master calls to say a joyful yes as you did at the Annunciation. Amen. THE MONTH OF MARY May, a time of rebirth in nature, is aptly dedicated to Our Lady, the Mother of New Life in Christ and our spiritual mother. I encourage all of you, in some particular and concrete way, to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary during her month. Practical devotions to Our Lady include recitation of the Hail Mary, the Angelus (replaced in the Easter season by the Regina Coeli), wearing her brown scapular or Miraculous Medal, praying the rosary and honoring her through small acts of love and sacrifice. Next Saturday, May 13, is the feast day honoring Mary as Our Lady of Fatima, named for her appearances to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Two of the children, Bl. Jacinta and Bl. Francisco, will be canonized in Fatima by Pope Francis on May 13, the 100th anniversary of Our Lady s appearance there. The cause for canonization of Lucia, the third child, is progressing. Mary s message at Fatima still resonates for each of us today: A call to conversion of heart, repentance from sin, reparation and devotion to prayer, especially the rosary the ultimate prayer to Jesus through Mary. May also brings First Holy Communion to our second graders at two Masses at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. (More on that next week!) Please include them in your prayers as they receive Christ in the Eucharist for the very first time. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for them! Blessed Jacinta and Francisco, pray for them!

Archdiocese for the Military Services 23rd Annual Memorial Mass honoring the men and women of the Armed Forces WORSHIP, PRAYER & FELLOWSHIP Living Faith A Reflection for Sunday, May 7 And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Acts 2:38 The word repent means to turn from sin, to change our actions. When it comes to change, do we take responsibility for change or do we think others have to change instead? Permanent change comes from within, we must take control and be disciplined. Remember, though, we are not alone; Jesus is there to help lighten the load. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT What a beautiful time of year to remember Christ s ultimate sacrifice for us. Yet He is STILL with us 2,000 years later, in silence, hidden in the Sacred Host. He is waiting for us to visit Him! Think of spending just one hour per week with Our Lord during Eucharistic Adoration from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, concluding with a Holy Hour. ST. May 7, 2017 + Fourth Sunday of Easter Page Eight FROM THE PARISH SCRAPBOOK The Fr. Rankin House (314 Duke Street) We recently renamed the White House, adjacent to the rectory, as the Fr. Rankin House. The house is used by many parish groups for meetings and events. It also serves as home for our in-residence priests. The name change stems from the significant work Fr. Thomas A. Rankin undertook for the parish as pastor in the 1930s and 1940s. The education of the parish children was a major concern of his. In 1934, Fr. Rankin was forced to close the Xavier Brothers School for boys on North Washington Street because it was too costly to operate both it and the parish school during the Depression. Seeing that the old parish school was becoming increasingly inadequate, Fr. Rankin made several attempts to purchase property to build a new school. Eventually, he procured the land on Green Street where our St. Mary School is located today. Fr. Rankin also played a large role in the complete restoration of the church following a devastating fire in 1929. He built the hallway between the sacristy and the rectory, and he completely refurbished the sacristy following the fire. After completing the restorations to the church, Fr. Rankin began enlarging the rectory. He wanted to cut a new window in his dining room (currently the pastor s office) to let in more light. However, he needed permission from the next door neighbor at 314 Duke Street to alter the property. When the neighbor objected, Fr. Rankin used his personal money to buy the house for the parish. We honor and remember Fr. Rankin by naming the house for him. Every third weekend of the month, join us for wine and cheese after the 5 p.m. Masses on Saturday and Sunday at the Fr. Rankin House patio (314 Duke Street).
