WE RE GLAD YOU RE HERE The Family of South Tulsa Baptist Church We are glad you have chosen to find out more about South Tulsa Baptist Church. We want this class to provide you a basic introduction to our church family. Since we have members from many church backgrounds, this class is designed to clearly explain who we are and what we believe as a church. Mission Verse Romans 1:8 I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. Mission Statement At South Tulsa, our mission is Sharing the Good News about Jesus in our community and around the world. A Picture of the Church In Acts 2, the Bible gives us a beautiful picture of the Early Church as they committed themselves to following Jesus and teaching others about Him, together. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-47) Five Elements of a New Testament Church (Acts 2:42-47) TEACHING: We share the Good News by teaching God s truth in the Scriptures. COMMUNITY: We share the Good News in community with each other as we experience our journey in faith together. SERVICE: We share the Good News by meeting the needs of others as God brings them across our paths. WORSHIP: We share the Good News through worship, praise, and giving thanks together. MISSION: We share the Good News by asking God to add to our church, daily, those who are being saved. 2 3

WHAT WE BELIEVE Our Beliefs GOD There is one and only one true and living South Tulsa Baptist Church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Southern Baptists do not follow creeds, but have adopted a confession of faith, described in The Baptist Faith and Message, as revised and adopted in 2000, which outlines the basic scriptural principles common among Southern Baptists. The following is a brief summary of a selection of those foundational principles, which also constitute the beliefs of our church. THE SCRIPTURE The Holy Bible is God s revelation of Himself to human beings. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation. God. He is the creator and ruler of the universe. He is infinitely holy, perfect, and His sovereign control over all that exists cannot be threatened. To Him all creatures owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being. GOD THE FATHER God the Father is both personal and almighty. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, and all-wise. GOD THE SON, JESUS CHRIST Jesus is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father and was the embodiment of Him on earth. He was born of a virgin. He lived a sinless human life. He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice. He bore the punishment of our sin on the cross. He rose from the grave to demonstrate His power and to offer life to all who believe. GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. He is fully divine and co-equal with the God the Father and God the Son. He helps the believer to understand spiritual truth and to interpret the Scriptures. He seals the believer until the day of final redemption. He empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service. HUMAN BEINGS Human beings are the special creation of God, both male and female, made in His own image. Humans are the crowning work of God s creation. Without Christ, every human being is separated from a relationship with God by disobedience, which the Bible calls sin. Every human being has dignity and value because God has created us in His image. History of South Tulsa Baptist Church 1978 First Baptist Church South began meeting at Thoreau Junior High as a satellite church of First Baptist Church Tulsa. 1979 November 4, moved into new building at 10310 S Sheridan Road with Dr. Ralph Bethea, Jr. as the first pastor. 1982 On Valentine s Day the church became autonomous and was renamed South Tulsa Baptist Church. 1983 The sanctuary expansion and addition of a two-story education building was completed in January. 1984 Larry Wileman was called as pastor. Building in Faith, ground was broken for the Fellowship Hall/ Education facility. 1985 The proposed budget totaled $778,550, attendance jumped 37%, and the church purchased 6.6 additional acres of land. 1989 South Tulsa was 24th among 1,400 Oklahoma Southern Baptist churches in Cooperative Program giving. VBS attendance soared to 515! 1991 Ground was broken on Easter Sunday for the Worship Center/Gym facility. 1992 On February 16, the $2.1 million, 34,000 square-feet Worship Center/Gym facility was dedicated to God. 1999 Mission Possible was successfully launched to retire more than $1 million in outstanding building debt. 4 5

SALVATION Salvation involves the redemption biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race. THE LORD S SUPPER What is the Lord s Supper? Affiliations of South Tulsa of the whole person and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Salvation is a free gift of God, and thus cannot be earned or lost. Salvation in Christ is the only way for a person to receive eternal life. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. How can I be saved? Admit, Believe, Commit (Romans 3:10-12; 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13) THE FAMILY God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption. Marriage is an institution that was created by God from the beginning (Genesis 2:24-25; Matthew 19:4-5). Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is God s unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to The Ordinances of the Church There are two ordinances of the church symbols that represent important parts of our faith but are not necessary for salvation. These ordinances are Baptism and the Lord s Supper. BAPTISM What is baptism? What is its meaning? Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is an act of obedience. It is a symbol. It is a profession of faith. (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Matthew 3:13-17) The Lord s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby believers remember and give thanks for the death of Christ, the Redeemer, and anticipate His second coming. It is a reminder of His death. It is a symbol. It is a statement of faith. (Matthew 26:26 29; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; 11:23-34) Deacons at South Tulsa The deacons of South Tulsa Baptist Church strive to be ministry servants in accordance with the New Testament model set forth in Acts 6:1-6 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13. They are not a governing body, but God-honoring men who have shown, by their actions, they are...full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge... of serving and assisting God s people. They minister at the direction of the pastor in carrying out God s work in the church and community by helping members and others in any way they can. At South Tulsa Baptist Church, we believe God desires that our church seek to minister to the world through Him. We work in partnership with various organizations as we seek to carry out the Great Commission. Our affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention allows us to spread God s Word from our local community to the far reaches of the world. Through our financial contributions to its Cooperative Program, along with thousands of other like-minded churches, we partner with the Southern Baptist Convention in sending missionaries to countries all around the globe. We are also affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and Tulsa Metro Baptist Network. Our partnership with these two organizations allows South Tulsa to cooperate in an intentional effort to join our hearts and our resources in fellowship, strategy, and service to reach Oklahoma and Tulsa for Jesus Christ. History of South Tulsa Baptist Church continued 2002 Dr. Lonnie Latham was called as our third pastor in January. 2003 Building a House, Creating a Home campaign launched fund raising for our new facilities. 2006 Dr. Ted Kersh was called as pastor in November. 2007 Over $1 million given and ground broken for Connect to the Vision bringing new Worship Center, Music and Office Suites into reality. 2009 Connect to the Vision concluded in July with over $3 million given, and the new Worship Center and facilities were dedicated to the Lord 2010 My Best for My Master was launched in September to begin reducing the $5.4 million in church debt. 2014 December marked the conclusion of My Best for My Master II and over $160,000 was given to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International 2016 Dr. Eric Costanzo was called as pastor in May. 2017 On Easter, A New Day at South Tulsa was implemented to pay off the remaining $1.87 million. 2018 On July 8 we celebrated being debt free and positioned to achieve even more for the Kingdom of God. 6 on November 8. WHY BE A MEMBER? What does being a church member mean? The Definition of Church Membership Members of South Tulsa Baptist Church are part of a community of faith. Together, we encourage and hold each other accountable to be faithful and grow in all areas essential to the Christian life. (Hebrews 10:24-25; Ephesians 4:13; Philippians 2:4,5,7; Colossians 1:28) Together, we are committed to growing in our knowledge and devotion to God s Word. (Colossians 3:16; 2 Timothy 1:13; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21) Together, we experience worship, fellowship, and service for the good of God s Kingdom. (John 4:23-24; Acts 2:42-47; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; Hebrews 10:24-25) Together, we provide financial support for the church and its mission endeavors through faithful and cheerful giving. (1 Corinthians 4:2; 1 Corinthians 16:2; 1 Peter 4:10) Together, we are led by the Holy Spirit in sharing the Good News about Jesus in our community and around the world. (Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 12:4-10; 1 Corinthians 12:4-5; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; 1 John 4:7-11) At South Tulsa Baptist Church, we offer membership to anyone who has confessed Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, and affirms their belief that God raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9-10). We also believe that a person s profession of faith should be followed by baptism by immersion, just as the Bible teaches. Membership at South Tulsa Baptist Church can happen through several different means. Becoming a Member of South Tulsa Baptist Church We invite you to begin the membership process at South Tulsa Baptist Church in one of four ways: Profession of Faith and Baptism This involves receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, followed by baptism. If you have questions about what it means to receive Christ personally, please talk to one of our ministry staff members or a church leader you trust TODAY. Letter If you currently have membership in another Baptist church, you may join our church by a transfer of your membership letter. Simply tell us that you are coming by letter and we will take care of the details of transferring your membership to our fellowship. 8 9

We invite you to complete the membership process in one of two ways: 1. Fill out a membership card at the conclusion of this class to begin the process of membership here at South Tulsa Baptist Church. GETTING INVOLVED 2. Speak to a minister at the close of one of our worship services when our response time is offered following the message. Opportunities to Grow and Serve (More information about all of our ministries and service There are three larger classes and one smaller class to choose from. Baptism If you have previously received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and have not received baptism by immersion, you may join our church through baptism. If you have questions about this, please talk to one of our ministry staff members as soon as possible. In each case, someone will sit down with you and discuss the best way for you to officially become a member of South Tulsa Baptist Church. Serving as a Member We at South Tulsa Baptist Church believe that Christ expects each one of us to serve others. This service can opportunities is available at our website, southtulsa.org) Sunday Bible Study We offer Sunday Bible Study groups for all ages, birth to senior adults, which meet from 9:40-10:40 a.m. YOUNG ADULTS College/Young Adults: Our college/young adult ministry encourages spiritual growth through Bible study using the Gospel Project. Men: If you are wanting to be in a men-only class this is a great option. This class uses the Explore the Bible material in order to go verse by verse through scripture. Women: We have two all-ladies classes. Our Ruth s Open Door class studies through the MasterWork Bible study material, and our L.A.C.E. (Ladies After Christ s Example) class goes verse by verse using the Explore the Bible material. Baptism is not a requirement for salvation. Scriptural baptism is a symbol of Christ s death, burial, and resurrection. Baptism is also a testimony of your salvation and an important step in obedience to Christ. We would love to be a part of that decision in your life! Statement If you were not previously a member of a Baptist church, you may join by statement if you have received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and have been baptized in a church of like-faith. We do not believe that only Baptists are going to heaven! At the same time, our church family has set high expectations for itself, and we want our members to have high expectations in their Christian walk as well. Toward this end, we ask all persons wanting to become a member to attend this Discover class to learn more about who we are. be seen in the various ministries of our church. These not only build up the Body, but provide necessary ministry to our community and our world. Christ s followers are called and equipped to serve both inside and outside the church s walls. We encourage each person to take a Spiritual Gifts Inventory Assessment, which should allow you to better determine your spiritual giftedness. You can access the Inventory Assessment at GIFTS.CHURCHGROWTH.ORG. This will help you to discover what type of gifts you might have in order to help you see where you would be most beneficial serving.
