THE SPIRE News of New Haven United Methodist Church Making Disciples for Jesus Christ in the world, by being God s Love in Action 5603 S. New Haven Avenue, Tulsa, OK. 74135 918-743-6491 VOLUME XXVII Number 14 April 14, 2017 This past Sunday we began Holy Week - the journey to the cross. As our children came down the aisle waving their palm branches during worship, we were reminded of Jesus joyful entry into Jerusalem. The streets Cindy s Chalkboard been in the dark places, until you ve seen what seems to be the triumph of evil, the triumph of sin and brokenness, and finally the triumph and tragedy of death that wasn t deserved. The crucifixion was simply the end of the beginning. Holy Week Explanation Good Friday is a religious holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. We observe this day during Holy Week on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. You may also have heard the name Good were lined with people excited to see Jesus! This event is mentioned in all four Gospels. We know, however, that there were hard events ahead. It would be easy to just skip over them and go straight to the celebration of Easter... But I don t believe you can really understand and appreciate Easter until you ve been to the cross. You can t appreciate the power of the resurrection until you ve Before we celebrate the risen Christ on Easter Sunday, we have the opportunity to witness what transpired between Palm Sunday and Easter morning. Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, commemorates the sharing of the Last Supper with Jesus and the Apostles. We will re-enact this meal on Thursday April 13th, at 6:30 pm with the service of Holy Communion. Friday by the names of Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday, or Easter Friday. Our Good Friday service will take place at 6:30 pm on April 14th in the Sanctuary. Directly after that service, we will walk the cross to the outside church yard. Our journey has begun. Let us make our way to cross together. - Pastor Cindy Bright Sunday (Holy Humor) Sunday April 23rd!! If you haven t experienced it yet, you will have another chance to witness our annual Holy Humor Sunday! It s called Bright Sunday, and it s coming to you in worship on April 23rd (the Sunday after Easter!). Bright Sunday comes from the Eastern Orthodox tradition of continuing to spread the JOY of Easter in the ongoing celebration of Jesus resurrection. For centuries in all Christian faith traditions, the week following Easter Sunday was observed as the "days of joy and laughter" with parties and picnics to celebrate Jesus' victory over death. On this Holy Humor Sunday, we will have a special shared message and a worship bulletin that will make you smile. Join us for lots of laughter and fun. Celebrate the Risen Christ with us!
