Dr. Katz summed up the presentation with, "Here at Hillel, we expand our horizons. Learning is not only learning from textbooks. If you have the interest, go for it. Your talent will grow as you learn the skills." Thank you, Jennifer, for an outstanding presentation. Page 3 of 22 The "Wheel of Fortune" themed evening was an amazing success, as guests had the opportunity to spin the Wheel of Discounts and Incentives to win an impressive array of prizes. Two participants won $500 off Tuition, another won a $400 registration fee credit, and another won a $250 security fee credit. Others left with cookbooks, Hillel sweatshirts and much more. Mommy & Me Rebate Certificates were handed to those currently enrolled in Hillel Yeshiva's Mommy & Me program. This rebate entitles families who have attended Mommy & Me to a Pre- Nursery credit (equivalent to all of their Mommy & Me fees) on their 2010-2011 tuition. The room was buzzing as guests learned what sets Hillel apart from other schools. They then had the opportunity to experience interactive classrooms put together by the ELC faculty and had a chance to ask them questions, all while enjoying a wonderful dinner. The Board of Directors were so impressed by this event that they are offering another special discount. The first 20 families to sign up their new Pre-nursery students for the 2010-2011 school year will receive an additional 10% off of their tuition. We would like to thank all of the amazing volunteers who helped make this event possible. A special thank you to Sally & Steven Safdieh for hosting this spectacular evening.

Page 4 of 22 Hillel Yeshiva's Haiti Initiative On Tuesday, February 2nd, Ricky Tawil, president of Hillel Yeshiva's student council, presented a $1,300 check to Board members of the Jewish Federation of Greater Monmouth County, including Howard Gases, Executive Director, Linda Choate, Assistant Director of Finance, and Richard Krupnick. Student council members Ricky Tawil, Isaac Gartenberg and Grace Tawil,

Page 5 of 22 and 6th grade representatives, Rebecca Sasson and Gordon Adelson, worked hard to coordinate this fundraiser to help the earthquake victims. Future initiatives will include other fundraisers spearheaded by our student government. Thank you, Mrs. Eva Wasser, for being the parent liaison to the Student Government for the Operation Haiti Project. A Special Morning for 1R, 1S and 1W A beautiful ceremony took place on Sunday, January 17th, as children in 1S, 1R, and 1W received their siddurim. All of the students glowed as they received their first siddurim. It was evident that they understood the significance of the day! The children sang beautiful songs, such as Beruchim Habaim, welcoming their parents to this special occasion, Torah Tziva Lanu Moshe- our Torah being passed down from Sinai, I Open My Siddur with Love and Shema Yisrael- the prayer stating that G-d is One. In a poignant rhyme, the children sang, "B'chal Matzav U'vichol Makom Hashem Imanu, Layla V'Yom.." In every situation and in each place, G-d is with us night and day. Thank you, morot, for an inspirational production and thank you, Morah Dahlia, for the beautiful musical accompaniment.

Page 6 of 22 3R and 3T Siyum On Erev Rosh Chodesh Shevat the third graders were privileged

Page 7 of 22 to celebrate their first siyum of the year. The children completed Parashat Vayera and utilized their Chumash skills both to translate and to understand the beautiful and very significant Chumash lessons. Rabbi Kassin and Dr. Katz enhanced the siyum with words of beracha and gave an introduction to the study of Rashi. The third graders delivered Divrei Torah. The children were presented with their first Rashi booklets. They will begin learning Parashat Chayei Sarah together with the Rashi commentary. In addition, the children created beautiful displays of the words of our Sages who taught us the Torah way of life. Thank you, Morah Treff and Morah Rosenblum, for your daily guidance to our students. Tu B'Shevat is Celebrated at Hillel Yeshiva

Page 8 of 22 What looked like a Garden of Paradise, was actually our own Elementary School Midrash transformed by Sagit and Merav! The beautifully decorated room with trees and flowers "WOWed" the Hillel students when they entered. A variety of activities were planned for the students including: A Memory Game - matching fruits to the berachot A Puppet Show Filling ice cream cones with chocolate pieces (which resembled dirt) and planting flower lollipops Making the Shivat HaMinim out of colored sugar dough Singing and dancing like farmers who are getting ready to plant Thank you, Sagit and Merav, for an outstanding program and for your daily presence and Ruach in our Yeshiva.

Page 9 of 22 Tu B'Shevat Dear Dr. Katz, Thank you for arranging the Tu B'Shevat assembly. The performance was excellent, to say the least! Every boy and girl in the audience was mesmerized throughout the entire presentation. The theme was presented on the students' level and was extremely educational. The Sherut Leumi girls, Sagit and Merav, gave the students a new appreciation for the perot of Eretz Yisrael. The Sherut Leumi programs have created a wonderful connection between Hillel students and the state of Israel, which will last a lifetime. Thank you for all of your innovative ideas on behalf of our students. Respectfully, The Second Grade Teachers Thank you and Todah Rabbah to our PTA for sponsoring the Tu B'Shevat refreshments and props for the Tu B'Shevat programs. E2K Competition

Page 10 of 22 The 8th grade E2K students participated in the annual International Virtual Competition and won third place. Hillel Yeshiva was represented by: 7th Grade Alan Menaged 8th Grade Sarah Ash Laura Dweck Isaac Gartenberg Jason Gindi Camille Greenberg Jack Massry Albert Mishaan Dorothy Newman Lindsay Rumeld Elaine S. Seruya Morris Sitt Danielle Tanzman The competition included 12 other schools via the Internet. In preparation for the contest the students worked very hard. For many days, during their lunch period, they studied key concepts of graphing on the coordinate plane, finding midpoints of lines, applying the distance formula to determine the length of a line, and using other formulas to determine the area of a variety of polygons. They also used negative and positive areas, as well as Pick's theorem. As Sarah Ash proudly announced, "Do you know what our prize was? It was feeling pride and joy for being students of Hillel Yeshiva!" On behalf of the Gruss Foundation the following congratulations was received: Judy and I wish you and your very talented E2K students a hearty Mazal Tov on taking third place in the 8th grade Math Virtual Competition. Page 12 of 22 On February 9th, the 6th grade girls and their mothers participated in the second mother/daughter Bat Mitzvah Workshop under the direction of Morah Schor. The theme of the day was Shabbat. The program began with a multi-media presentation that the girls produced about Shabbat. The program included singing, artwork, a puppet show and a Shabbat game show. Following the presentation, Rabbi Kassin spoke to everyone about the primary role of the woman in preparing for Shabbat. The event concluded with Challah baking and was enjoyed by all. Thank you, Sagit, Merav, and Joyce for participating in the program.

Page 13 of 22 Presidents Play 4E Congratulations to Ms. Richards and the students of 4E for their magnificent performance celebrating Presidents' Day. The play was about the presidents who vacationed at the Jersey Shore. In their play, Class 4E took a field trip to Seven Presidents' Park in Long Branch, NJ. The students found "artifacts" in the sand which prompted them to discuss which President each artifact must have belonged to. The students also sang about our presidents, our country, and our flag. Thank you, Morah Dahlia, for the music and staging arrangements.

Page 16 of 22 Dylan Ades - Hillel's "Student" SmartBoard Instructor

Page 17 of 22 Rabbi Beyda's knowledge of SmartBoard technology has so impressed his students that Dylan Ades decided to design a lesson of his own for the class! The boys in 5th grade are learning Perek Hey in Berachot. Dylan prepared an amazing lesson on the first three mishnayot. The first mishnah was about concentrating before praying the Amida, the second about why certain berachot in the Amida seem not to relate to each other, but really do, and the third mishnah was about what the hazzan can say and why. Dylan made up a game with 12 questions on these mishnayot. It took Dylan many hours to prepare this lesson.. now he and his class really appreciate the effort that Rabbi Beyda exerts in preparing SmartBoard lessons for his class! Way to go, Dylan! Detective Day for Nursery and PreK On Tuesday, February 9, 2010 the Nursery and PreK students were introduced to Detective Loizos of the Monmouth County Police Dept. As part of Health & Safety Week at Hillel, the children listened intently as the officer discussed a variety of safety precautions in an age appropriate manner. Stranger safety was taught using the note "No, Go, Tell". The officer gave the children the opportunity to share their knowledge and was most impressed and was sometimes amused by their sincerity.

Page 18 of 22 Kindergarten Students Celebrate Health and Safety Week While every week is exciting at Hillel, Health and Safety Week was especially fun! Health and Safety Week was off to a flying start on Monday, February 8, 2010, as the Kindergarten class attended an exciting presentation by Nurse Nora and Dr. Bernard of Jersey Shore Medical Center. The students had an enriching

Page 19 of 22 experience learning about making smart choices in nutrition. Dr. Bernard taught the children an important motto, "Treat Yourself Right". The children are now familiar with the five food groups. They discussed eating healthy snacks and drinking plenty of water and milk. Students received colorful handouts, stickers and even a miniature "Dr. Bernard" doll for their classroom. On Monday afternoon, Dr. Gindi a.k.a Esther's dad, came to visit and taught us about healthy teeth. We learned about keeping our teeth clean and what dentists can do to help us keep our mouths healthy. The children were amused as they watched adorable video clips featuring monkeys and other animals visiting the dentist. They were also extremely eager to share their own and their family members' teeth and dentist adventures. The Kindergarten students found it interesting as they noted that Dr. Gindi fulfills so many roles each day; a dad, a doctor and finally, a teacher at Health and Safety Week! Thank you to Dr. Bernard and Dr. Gindi for utilizing their creativity to provide our Kindergarten students with a most meaningful, enjoyable experience.

Page 20 of 22 Shared Literacy at Hillel Yeshiva Pre-Kindergarten As part of Hillel Yeshiva's Balanced Literacy Curriculum, a brand new Shared Literacy Program has been implemented in the PreK classes. The children look forward to "Read Aloud" time as it provides them with the opportunity to interact with new groups of friends. As the children sit cozily on the classroom rug, the teacher introduces various genres of children's literature to the students. As time passes, the children are able to categorize the books according to their genres. Research has shown that this kind of exposure to vocabulary, concepts and text structures enriches the children's reading experience. We are pleased to offer the PreK students this innovative opportunity. The Pre-Nursery Classes visit the Health Office at Hillel Yeshiva

Page 21 of 22 In conjunction with health week, the Pre-Nursery classes visited the Health office at Hillel Yeshiva. Nurse, Jean Cadenelli spoke to the children about her job and showed them the equipment that she uses. The children enjoyed touching a real stethoscope and some were even brave enough to let the nurse measure them on her scale. This adorable trip accomplished a dual purpose. In addition to learning important information about staying healthy, the trip demystified the experience of going to the nurse if need be. The children recognize "Nurse" Jean as a kind and gentle friend. Thank you Nurse Cadenelli for this wonderful experience!
