FEBRUARY 25, 2018 I SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT WELCOME TO THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST WITNESSING CHRIST IN DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE This is My Beloved Son, Listen to Him In today s Gospel according to St. Mark, we are given his account of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mt. Tabor. Why would the Church choose this reading for the Second Sunday of Lent? What does this have to do with the Cross? It is interesting that St. Peter wants to stay on the mountain of Transfiguration. He said, Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents He wanted to stay for as long as possible with Jesus in His glory. This is the same St. Peter who a short time later will run from another mountain, Mount Calvary. Yet, it was the same Jesus who was present in the terrible suffering of the Cross that was present in glory on Mt. Tabor. Our patron, St. John, was the only person present at both the Transfiguration and the Cross. His love for Jesus allowed him to say at Calvary through the pain of suffering, It is good that we are here. This is our lesson today for our Lenten journey. Do we remain with Jesus through the suffering of the Cross? A CHURCH ON A MISSION Parish Mission Statement We, the Congregation of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Lafayette, acknowledge Jesus as Lord and find in His person and mission our truest identity. Obedient to the promptings of the Spirit, we acknowledge His life and ministry; His dying and rising as profound expressions of the Father s constant love for all people. We faithfully join Him as ministers in His kingdom. Our mission involves the total restoration of humanity and the salvation of the whole person. Our response to this mission finds expression in programs that promote healing and unity in every aspect of the human person. Like Jesus, we seek to express solidarity with the poor and the oppressed, striving all the while to remove from ourselves and Church structures whatever promotes inequality, injustice and oppression.
