S T A U G U S T I N E C AT H O L I C C H U R C H 185 N Oak Harbor Street, Oak Harbor, WA 98277 (360) 675-2303 Rev. Paul Pluth, JCL, Pastor The Baptism of the Lord 1 3 J a n u a r y 2 019 C hristmas ends today! What? Wasn t it over last week with Epiphany and the coming of the Wise Men? Actually--no! The Season of Christmas goes through today, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus. Today s feast completes Christmas and continues Epiphany. Today, Jesus goes down to the Jordan River to be baptized by his cousin John. When Jesus comes up out of the water of the river (he was immersed), Jesus sees the sky split open and the Holy Spirit coming down on him, like a dove. Jesus hears the Father saying to him, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. (Mark 1:7-11). It s a remarkable moment, because the entire Trinity is present: Jesus, the Son of God, in the river; the Holy Spirit coming down from heaven; and the Father making his voice heard from heaven. From the moment of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus, Baptism is changed for us. Up to that moment, Baptism merely had been an outward sign of a decision than an individual had made for themselves. For example, John was baptizing persons who had chosen to repent and return to God. Being baptized by John was the sign of what that person had done for themselves. But, since the Baptism of the Lord Jesus, Baptism is filled the power of the Trinity. Now, when we baptize in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all three Persons of the Trinity are present, charging Baptism with divine power to change the one being baptized and make him or her a child of God. Because the Trinity was there at Jesus Baptism, now the Trinity is there every time we baptize. The Son of God was born as a human child at Bethlehem. The Baptism of Jesus, Son of God, tells the good news that now, through our Baptism, God adopts us as his sons and daughters. That s why the Baptism of the Lord Jesus completes Christmas. The Baptism of the Lord Jesus also continues Epiphany because an epiphany is a revealing. At his Baptism, Jesus is revealed to be the Son of God, as he begins his ministry on earth, and brings us the gift of salvation! Father Paul Pluth
