VOL XXXIV BULLETIN THURSDAY 31 ST DECEMBER, 2015 No. 60 VC Applauds Venom-Antivenom Study Group for Outstanding Performance V ice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, has commended the Venom-Antivenon Study Group (VASP) of Bayero University for its outstanding landmark in research and performance within the last few months. The group is saddled with the research into and study of antitoxic for treating bites from venomous animals such as snakes and spiders. Receiving the study group on Tuesday 29 th December, 2015 in his office, under the leadership of the Provost, College of Health, Professor Abdurrazak G. Habib, he said the University would continue to support the study group in its effort to solve societal problems. Professor Yahuza Bello said when the group was formed the University Management was very much happy because it was in line with the opinion of the University that such and similar groups are needed so as to assist research and teaching. He said the study group was a milestone in advancing the efforts of the University towards problem solving especially that the Management was putting effort towards the completion and takeoff of the two research centres at the College of Health and other research centres at the New and Old Campuses. The Vice Chancellor said coordinating bodies were very important in the field of research as their presence would facilitate the desired impact, saying that with the study group coordinating the Venom-Antivenon researches, the University has a formidable arm in solving one of the most challenging problems bedeviling the society to do with snake and spiders bites. Professor Bello expressed gratitude at the manner the study group developed its proposals, assuring that the University would approve the remaining 3million Naira grants in addition to the 5million Naira given to the group initially. He urged the group to search for more collaboration in order to boost their research activities. The Provost, College of Health, Professor Abdurrazak G. Habib said they were in the Vice Chancellor s office to brief him on the activities of the study group and congratulate him for his recent appointment as the 10 th Vice Chancellor of Bayero University. Professor Abdurrazak Habib said the study group was able to get collaborations from within and outside the country, adding that during its maiden conference, Bayero University was able to make over 20 oral presentations in addition to the other presentations done by the academics. He further said they went for other conferences in Cambridge, Oxford and some other overseas universities apart from the ones conducted in Nigeria; these he said were in addition to three landmark papers which were publicised in over 50 international media. Professor Habib said the study group has developed three proposals of 180million Naira and sent to the TETFund, saying, however, the proposals have not yet scaled through. He appealed to the Vice Chancellor to give more support to the study group in order to deliver.

2 2015/2016 First Batch Postgraduate Admissions The Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies at its 146 th Meeting approved provisional admission of the 1 st batch of applications. All applicants and the general public are invited to check SPS and Faculty Notice Boards for details. The list is on the University Website, particularly for applicants outside the vicinity of the University. All successful applicants can collect their admission letters from 4 th January, 2015. Dates for screening and registration would be announced later. The application portal is closed now, but announcement would be made when/if reopened. A letter signed by M. T. Jikamshi, Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, advised all prospective applicants to be wary of fraudsters. All enquiries on Postgraduate matters should be addressed to the Dean or Secretary of the School of Postgraduate Studies, he concluded. VC Approves N19m Research Grants for 115 Staff Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, has administratively approved the release of a total N19,450,180 as research grants to 115 staff, studying for higher degrees in and other Nigerian Universities, who fulfilled the University s laid down requirements. According to the approval, a total of N15,510,180 was for 64 staff undertaking higher degree oriented research. Another N3,120,000 was for 31 staff that applied for 40% balance of their grant (having submitted copies of their bound dissertations). And N820,000 was for 20 staff that applied for a thesis grant having provided proof that their research had been approved for binding. A letter to the beneficiaries signed by Mustafa Ibrahim, Sec. URB, indicates that in conformity with the regulations, all beneficiaries are expected to deposit three copies (in soft and hard format) of their dissertations with the URB Secretariat, except those who have already done so.
