Highlands Church Library The Other Face of God: when the stranger calls us home by Mary Jo Leddy 261LED Mary Jo Leddy lives with refugees at Romero House, a temporary shelter in Toronto where extraordinary things happen. In this meditative reflection she invites readers to use the eyes of Christ to truly see those who have fled their homes and so come to know our true selves. The Other Face of God inspires us to know our neighbor, and to better love our neighbor as ourselves. Mary Jo Leddy, the founder of Romero House in Toronto, is a recipient of the Human Relations Award of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, as well as the prestigious Order of Canada. Her other books include Radical Gratitude. Lent and Easter books are on display in the Church Library. Check them out today. Belonging Membership made Accessible Membership at Highlands United Church has many different levels and expressions. I d like to tell you about an opportunity to become a formal member that is one who does some intentional reflection and who makes a public affirmation within this community, to be a follower of Jesus. It is akin to the difference between people living together (informal membership) and people getting married (public declaration). We have designed a series of Sunday services that will fulfill the requirements of formal membership and we are inviting everyone in the congregation to participate. For some it will be a refresher for others it will be new material. On Sunday, May 31, we will formally receive those who wish into formal membership in The United Church of Canada and Highlands United Church. Prerequisites: None if you have been baptised at another church please let us know where and when. Expectations: The membership requirements are: Attend all 6 services below either in person or on line Complete paper or on-line registration form to let us know your intention to make a formal connection by Sunday, May 23 so we can have everything ready for May 31 There is no test to complete We will gather for coffee in room 201 on Sunday, May 3 and May 17 for Q&A come to one or both That you will attend Sunday May 31 to make your commitment public through baptism and confirmation of vows if you have not been confirmed; or just confirmation of baptism vows if you have been baptized. Helping Hasna to Highlands! The Highlands Refugee Committee has news!!... We are excited to announce that we have been approved by Immigration Canada to sponsor HASNA ABDALA MOHAMED. HASNA is a 27 yr old Ethiopian (single) woman of Oromian descent. Hasna is considered to be a woman at risk (high) by the UNHCR and is a victim of violence and torture. She is currently seeking refuge in Egypt. We at Highlands, together with some assistance from the Government of Canada, will be responsible for her for costs and resources for the first year from her time of arrival. A conservative estimate of our sponsorship costs for the first year is valued at around $9,000 dollars. We are responsible for her accommodation, food, clothing, basic household needs and also to help her find medical, dental and counseling resources as the need arises. We will have the pleasure of helping Hasna settle in our city and supporting her as she embarks on a new way of life. This is where we will need lots of support from you, our congregation and Church Community, to HELP US HELP HASNA TO HIGHLANDS. We will be posting more information about Hasna, her origins and culture, and the Oromian civil war in Ethiopia in future Highlights. You can contact any one of our committee members for more info on how you can help. Marilyn MacDonald, Catherine Alkenbrack, Kumu Navaratnam, Marguerite Wilson, Peter Ackhurst, Phyllis Ferguson, Lindsay Bottomer, Norma Bailey Please talk to any one of us or see us at the Action table this Sunday for a donation form or for any other Information on how you can HELP US HELP HASNA TO HIGHLANDS. 11

Community News Easter Message from First United Church Community Ministry Society: EASTER MESSAGE FROM FIRST UNITED: Reverend Sally offers the following message: May the awesome God of Easter surprise you with Joy and wonder. IT DOESN T TAKE MUCH Do you have a million dollars? No? Do you have hours to spare every week? No? Well that s fine, because what WE need takes only 2 minutes and a phone! There are community meals at First United everyday, but there isn't enough bike parking for the community to park their bikes safely. For safety, they can't bring their bikes inside. Please call the City at 311 and ask them to install bike racks in front of 320 East Hastings, and at Gore and Hastings. Woo! Bikes!! DID YOU KNOW? It s so wonderful to read the reports from shelter staff and see a name under the heading Bed Lost and under Reason it says Placed in housing. 15
