Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Notes from the Pastor Celebrating a Catholic Christmas A Gift to All Nations God gives the world His Son who dwells among us. He fills us with a love that must be shared. This is why we give gifts on Christmas. In this way we imitate those who gave gifts, like the Magi and St. Nicholas. This brings us a new perspective to our own giving. We can ask, who is in greatest need and what special gifts can we give? Many families have discovered the joy of giving of their time outside the Christmas season. They visit shut-ins and visit residents in nursing homes. They may also visit patients at a hospital on a regular basis. Some people also give of their time and talent by being involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They reach out to the poor and homeless, as God reaches out to us through His Son. We can consider alternative forms of giving as well. We can give to charities in the name of friends. We may want to encourage our families to include the less fortunate in their gift-giving. In this way Christ gives to us. Celebrating The Whole Christmas Season We as Catholics know that Christmas is not over on December 25th. Those first few days after Christmas invite us to continue to open our hearts to the baby Jesus and what He brings. There is the invitation to discipleship on December 26th with the Feast of St. Stephen. On December 27th we celebrate the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, who tells us that Jesus is the Word made Flesh. On December 28th we celebrate the feast of the Holy Innocents. On that day we see the reality of the opposition to Jesus. Finally on the Sunday after Christmas Day, which this year is December 30th, we celebrate the blessing of the family, or the Feast of the Holy Family. Adapted by Our Sunday Visitor By Amy Welborn December 30th, 2018 Notes from Deacon Fred We are Family? Family. Unconditional love, forgiveness, encouragement, understanding, fidelity, commitment, struggle, sacrifice.. sacramental. Families hold a very special place in our hearts because it is in this environment we grow and learn what it is to live family. We each have our own experience of family don t we? Some families live out the sacramental values of what family is meant to live, but sadly some do not For those children that struggle with a broken home, and have been shortchanged in experiencing a good sacramental family, take heart and look around to find those who are providing you with that unconditional love and support that God intended for you to have. You are loved so much, words cannot express. Families start with a good sacramental marriage, where each spouse tries to put the need of the other before their own and most importantly their relationship to God first, to seek the grace needed to live as God intended. The Holy family lived this way. Joseph put Mary s needs and safety before his own.. always Mary trusted and loved Joseph, and followed Joseph knowing this. When Jesus was born, they taught, and loved their Child knowing that this Child was God s gift to them and indeed to the whole world. They were entrusted with this life and parental responsibilities to ensure that this Child would experience the love of family. We are invited as part of that family regardless of our circumstances.. We are part of the Holy Family if we do the will of the Father.. Someone told him, Your mother and brothers are standing outside asking to speak with you. But Jesus said in reply to the one who told him Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?.. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister and mother. The will of the Father is shown to us by Jesus. The will of the Father is love, sacrifice and forgiveness.. as lived by Jesus who is calling us to do the same.. in our marriage.. in our family.. We can experience the love of family by living in this way. Parents please take note. Our children are depending on us.

December 30th, 2018 T M, S.J A (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) P, HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation to do his Father s work but he also returned home with his parents. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Hannah conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel (1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28) or Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14. Psalm Blessed are they who dwell in your house, O Lord (Psalm 84) or Psalm 128. Second Reading See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God (1 John 3:1-2, 21-24) or Colossians 3:12-21 [12-17]. Gospel The boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. They found him in the temple, in the midst of the teachers (Luke 2:41-52). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Jn 2:18-21; Ps 96:1-2, 11-13; Jn 1:1-18 Tuesday:Nm 6:22-27; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21 Wednesday: 1 Jn 2:22-28; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 1:19-28 Thursday: 1 Jn 2:29 3:6; Ps 98:1, 3cd-6; Jn 1:29-34 Friday:1 Jn 3:7-10; Ps 98:1, 7-9; Jn 1:35-42 Saturday: 1 Jn 3:11-21; Ps 100:1b-5; Jn 1:43-51 Sunday: Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12 J. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen Thursday: The Most Holy Name of Jesus Friday: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton; First Friday Saturday: St. John Neumann; First Saturday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for fes val meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind! James Field

Psalms 112, 5, 6 Here at St. Joan of Arc the St. Vincent de Paul Society helped many people in the past month who reside within our parish boundaries. With your financial support and the efforts of our volunteers, we assisted families with rental payments, electric and water bills, prescriptions and other health care needs, transportation expenses and lodging. We spent over a lot of money helping our neighbors, but more money is needed. Our prison ministry continues to be active in the community also. Several volunteers spend hours each month ministering to women in our prison ministry. In the New Testament, James tells us of the relationship between faith and works. He says, "Be doers of the Word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves." Works are a necessary part of faith. If you want to increase your faith, we have a great opportunity for you. Please consider joining us as we help our neighbors. Speak to any Vincentian, stop by the parish office or call Jim Humphrey at 901-827-5927. You and our neighbors will both be better off if you do. Honor Our Lady by attending Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God. Masses are Monday at 4:00pm Tuesday at 10:00 am. ST. JOAN OF ARC GROUNDS CREW.... We are asked to give to our church, TIME, TALENT and TREASURE. Many cannot give much monetarily, and we understand that, but can you give time? We need volunteers for our Grounds Crew. They are here on Wednesday and Friday mornings mowing, trimming shrubs and maintaining our sprinkler system to keep our property beautiful. Please think about donating some hours each week or month to help keep our parish grounds beautiful. If you are interested please call the parish office at: 352-688-0663. MASS INTENTION REQUESTS Offering Mass for a special intention has been a long standing tradition in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are received by the person for whom the Mass is celebrated. Masses are said for many reasons; for a deceased person, for a living person, in honor of someone s birthday, in honor of someone's anniversary, etc. The name of the person or persons we are praying for is mentioned in the general intercessions, by the priest at Mass and in our weekly bulletin. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, living or deceased, please ask at the Parish Office. A Mass Card will be given to you as a reminder of the time and date you requested.
