Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes. Our Mission & Common Life We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. The Head Usher today is Al Mead. See an usher if you need assistance. Rev. Patricia Farris and Dr. Jim Smith are out today. Today our clergy members Rev. Robert English, Rev. Keri Olsen, Rev. Larry Young, and our lay representatives Bee Campbell, Dick Crawford, Jack Fry, Adam Guerrero, Tricia Lindley and Jen Jacques are returning from the California-Pacific Annual Conference at the University of Redlands. During the summer months the Chancel Choir is singing some of their favorite anthems from the prior year. We hope they are your favorites also. Nursery Care is available at 9 a.m. in Room 204 in the Education Building. Parents with young children are welcome to worship in the sanctuary or in the Kids Zone in the narthex. First UMC takes the care and safety of children seriously. We are a Safe Sanctuary congregation. A changing table is provided in the restroom located in the hallway west of the Fireside Room. Please see an usher for directions. Flowers at the Reredos: Celebrating our 40th Anniversary, from David & Charlsa Boone. Flowers in the Narthex: Happy Birthday Carl Greenwood, from Carol Greenwood. Correction from last week's flowers at the Reredos: Given in honor of Patti Agnew on receiving her Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Seminary. Patti grew up in the church and was very active in a number of programs. She was a former recipient of a Methodist Foundation scholarship and the Williams Award. She currently serves as senior minister at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. Given by Paul and Sandi Agnew. To request prayers, you may fill in a Let's Connect/Let Us Pray card found in the pews, and drop in the offering plate during worship. If there are Prayer Quilts on the north wall of the sanctuary, you are invited to pray over and tie knots on the quilts. Stop by the Hospitality Table in Simkins Hall in The Shelby Center during Coffee Fellowship today to ask about membership. Visit the Fireside Room after worship to view the paintings of Esther Roebuck, First UMC member John Roebuck's mother. Next Sunday: Worship at 10 a.m.; Tricia Lindley will preach. Each time we worship, we collect food for the Westside Food Bank. In June bring canned soups. Resident Bishop Minerva G. F O C U S O N lay-speaker sunday June 19, 2016 Today as members of the clergy finish at the Cal-Pac Conference in Redlands, several of the First UMC lay servants will lead worship. Ron Theile planned the service and prepared today s sermon. According to the United Methodist Discipleship Ministries, Lay Servants are to serve the local church or charge in any way in which their witness or leadership and service inspires the laity (congregation) to deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. This includes the interpretation of scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church. Here at First UMC, the 2016 certified lay servants include: Ron Theile, Wynn Battig, Chris Reagh, Carol Greenwood, and Bee Campbell. They have attended classes as determined by the United Methodist Lay Servant Ministries guidelines, and submitted Lay Servant annual reports. Ron Theile explains, The Lay Speaker Ministry is an important part of the United Methodist Church connection. It allows those who feel that they have been called by God to take a more active role in their church, Conference and even service to the church at the global level. Lay Speaker Ministry (a part of Discipleship Ministries) answers the needs of those who feel a deeper commitment to Christ and discipleship. We thank those who take on the role of lay servants for their service. To find out more information about becoming a lay servant, contact the church office. first united methodist church of santa monica 1008 Eleventh Street, Santa Monica, CA 90403 www.santamonicaumc.org 310-393-8258 info@santamonicaumc.org
