June/July 2014 First Edition A Note from the Pastor Why do we have an Apostles Creed? Where did it come from? Is it really necessary to say it every week? The creed seems out of date and I don t really understand it all, so can t we just let it go? Why do we even need a creed? Isn t God s word in the Bible enough? Shouldn t the Bible matter more than anything else? What if I don t believe everything in the creed? There are parts I m not sure I can honestly affirm. Should I recite the Creed, but skip over the parts I struggle with? And can I still be a Christian if I struggle with this basic list? I love the Creed, but we say it so much it becomes rote and mechanical. Why don t we say it occasionally, on special Sundays so that it seems more meaningful? These are just a few of the thoughtful questions Christians have asked over the years about the Apostles Creed. Have you ever asked any of those questions or wondered why we say what we say? If so, then make sure you come to church this summer. We will spend our Sundays together exploring these and other questions about the Apostles Creed. We will break it down, belief by belief and go deeper into these phrases that we say regularly without giving much thought to what we actually mean and why it is important. Helga Bogardus Director of Music Ministry music@fumcfv.org Danny Moody Organist The Grand Finale for the 2013-14 program year ended with a BANG on Wednesday, May 21 as the Handbell Choirs concluded the season with a concert of fun, favorite music including The Muppet Show Theme, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pachelbel s Canon and Katy Perry s Firework. Thank you to Chef Roger White for preparing a delicious Fellowship Dinner with proceeds going to support the handbell ministry. Thank you to Grace Grant for giving Grace Notes Handbell Choir a fresh new look with our new Royal Blue Handbell Shirts. The Handbell ministry is on hiatus for the summer and will resume rehearsals in September. Children s Choirs are gearing up with songs from this year s VBS Workshop of Wonders. VBS Songs will be presented at 11:00am worship on Sunday, Sunday, June 22. Children s Choirs will also be on summer break through August. Although Church choirs from across Fuquay Varina offered a wide variety of musical styles and traditions at Choirfest on Sunday, May 4th, we found a stronger bond in our shared passion for Jesus, love of music and support of Southern Wake Faith Community in Action. It was an honor to represent First UMC staying true to our identity as a traditional faith community and offering excellent musicianship of Chancel Choir and Children s Choir. Summer Hymn Sing returns in July! During the opening of worship through the month of July Helga will take hymn requests from the congregation. Look through the hymnal and jot down hymn numbers to participate in this old fashioned hymn sing. As weekends begin to be packed with summer fun you may find yourself at 8:30 worship. You will be energized by the Contemporary Style of the Music Team on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. The Music Team will continue to offer the newest Christian music through the summer. Be renewed and refreshed in worship or join the Music Team for rehearsals at 6:00pm also on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Ryan Epps Home for Children is a safe haven for orphaned boys and girls in Haiti. We believe that children are the future even in such an impoverished place as Haiti. It is therefore our mission to provide these young ones a place which is nurturing, safe, and welcoming. Here they can be raised with attention to their physical, intellectual and spiritual growth in an atmosphere of Christian love. Haiti Mission Trip We are excited to announce that our church has organized a mission team to serve in Haiti this summer. We will be serving at the Ryan Epps Home for Children. Our team will work with the children of the orphanage, do manual labor in the community, prepare meals for the local families and worship alongside those in the community. The dates of our trip are August 5th through August 13th. We will be on our mission trip June 29th July 4th! We will be working hard and having fun. Facebook If you are a Facebook user and you haven't "liked" the church, First United Methodist Church of Fuquay Varina, please do! If you can't find us by searching on Facebook there is a link on the church's web site, www.fumcfv.org. Over the summer we are going to have a little fun! I will be taking pictures around the church to see if you know where they are. Some will be easy, some may be a bit more challenging! "Like" the church and find out how well you know your church! If you would like to help out with the page please contact Debbie White. dewdrop91804@aol.com Prayer Ministry Back on May 1 we celebrated the National Day of Prayer. We had 7 individuals who stopped by the church to pray throughout the day! It is not a numbers game but some like to know numbers. Those that came truly appreciated being able to come and pray in the sanctuary. We had the doors wide open, inviting all who drove by to come on in! Your Prayer Ministry team is honored to be able to do this for our church and the community every year. Our next big event will be on All Saints Sunday in November. Plan to stay after church for lunch on November 2 to honor the saints that have gone on to Glory in the past year. As always we welcome new team members all the time. If you feel God's nudge to pray for others through your church's prayer ministry team, please contact me. Debbie White prayforme@fumcfv.org

Love Thy Neighbor is a ministry started last year in our congregation. This group focuses on building a community amongst those in need in Fuquay Varina. A meal is provided free of charge at West Jones Street Park once a month. From there, the people s needs are met, from working with the Matthew 25 project to provide clothes for families to temporary internet help so that the people can apply for jobs and assistance. The focus of this ministry is showing Christ s love through community and sharing. For more details, you can contact Dana Vaughn. To make a donation above and beyond your current tithe, you can make a check out to the church with "Love Thy Neighbor" in the memo line. UMW UMW would like to THANK everyone for their support of our first BBQ mission fundraiser! We couldn't have done it without Tim Ruffin, owner of The Bengal Pig, all of our helpers and everyone who bought tickets and came to eat barbecue. We are very excited to be able to send money to Haiti to purchase rice and beans to feed families and so much more. We are also grateful to all who came and helped us celebrate Ellen Rose on June 1st. If you missed Church, she preached a wonderful sermon and we had a great time of fellowship over a huge spread of food! Thanks especially to all who helped set up and clean up for the event. As always, our meetings are held the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Chapel (unless noted otherwise in the bulletin or by email). All are welcome to join us in June and July as we will meet at Sunni Skies for ice cream on June 12th at 7:00 and will then meet at Grace Grant's home on July. 10th for a spiritual devotion. Love Thy Neighbor: Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:20am Our next Love Thy Neighbor meal at West Jones Street Park is on Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:20am. This ministry provides a meal the first Wednesday of each month to our neighbors in need. We also enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship together! We will meet at the church and then head over to the park together. Our main meal will be fried chicken. We are in need of the following items for the meal: ~dinner rolls ~4 large salads of your choosing (ex: potato, pasta, fruit, 3 bean, etc) ~4 desserts ~4 sodas ~1 24-pk water bottles Please contact Beth Munzenmaier at bmunzenmaier@fumcfv.org if you would be willing to provide any of these items.
