May 2017 Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church The Faith Lutheran Newsletter is a monthly publication of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Volume 78 Issue 12 5 Weekly Schedule: & Adult Bible Study 8:15 am D & T Classes Sundays 11:00am Confirmation & Ark classes Wednesdays @ 6:00-6:50pm 5th & 7th grade Thursday Men s Bible Study From Pastor Scudder s Desk Over 20 years ago (1995) ABC ran a documentary called, "In The Name Of God." It was a well done piece on what was, at that time, being done by so many of these so called "mega"-churches to just get people in the door. It really gave a person a reason to pause and think: "Why do I go to the church that I do?" Do I go because it's the biggest game in town? Do I go because that s where everybody who's anybody goes? Do I go because that s where they have the most entertaining gatherings called worship? Or, do I go because I want to be fed with the Word of God and take part in the feast of victory in the Lord's Supper? Not that all big churches are bad but do we go to church to be entertained or to receive God's gifts of Word and Sacrament? And in turn give Him thanks for His great love and forgiveness? In that documentary ABC's Peter Jennings asked Rev. Bill Hybels (pastor of the 15,000 + member Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago), "Why don't I even see a cross in your church?" Rev. Hybels response was, "Well, we don't want to tie up all of Christianity into ONE symbol." My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, if the Cross of Christ is not the center of our lives, what is? On Good Friday Jesus said, from the Cross, "It is finished." Salvation was won for us. Nothing more has to or can be done. On Easter morning that Cross was empty. Christ has risen, He has risen indeed! The Cross IS Christianity. Don't ever let anybody take that away from you! The Lord be with you!... Amen. Pastor Scudder Special Activities: Board of Ed. Question: If God created the world 6000 years ago or so, why are stars millions of light years away? The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork (Psalm 19:1) We know from the dates God gives us in the Bible that He did create the whole universe about 6000 years ago. When we hear the term light-year, we need to realize it is not a measure of time but a measure of distance, telling us how far away something is. Distant stars and galaxies might be millions of light-years away, but that doesn t mean that it took millions of years for the light to get here, it just means it is really far away! When God created the universe, everything was already working perfectly, exactly how He wanted it to work. So, I believe the stars could be seen (however God did that) on earth as soon as God spoke them into existence. Keep enjoying the splendor of the night sky, but remember that God created it to display His glory so we could behold how wonderful and powerful our Creator really is! Next months question: Youth News (Grades 6-12) No activity for youth in May What is evolution? Bible References: Genesis 1:20-25, Romans 1:22, Psalm 83-9 Remember kids, if you have a question about God, the Bible, Church, please write it down and place it in Pastor Scudder s mailbox, or e-mail it to him at scuddermr@iowatelecom.net
