WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS MOMENT FOR MINISTRY: Compassion International Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 145:1-7 Leader: I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. All: Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. Leader: One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. All: They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness. *CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS - Hymn #295 Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne Hark how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own Awake my soul and sing of Him who died for thee And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity Crown Him the Lord of love behold His hands and side Rich wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight But downward bends each burning eye at mysteries so bright song continued above - 2 - *Indicates when to stand.

*CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS (continued) Crown Him the Lord of peace whose power a sceptre sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise his reign shall know no end and round His pierced feet fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet Crown Him the Lord of years the Potentate of time Creator of the rolling spheres ineffably sublime All hail! Redeemer hail! for Thou hast died for me Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity *PRAYER OF PRAISE *HOUSE OF GOD, FOREVER (PSALM 23) God is my shepherd, I won't be wanting, I won't be wanting He makes me rest, in fields of green, with quiet streams Even though I walk, through the valley, of death and dying I will not fear, cause you are with me, you are with me Your shepherd's staff comforts me, you are my feast In the presence of enemies Surely goodness will follow me, follow me In the house of God forever (repeat) God Calls Us The Lord summons his people to worship and we respond in obedience. The Lord s call is a call to action. We gather, praise, adore, give thanks, etc. The Call to Worship is a joyful summons and a clear reminder that worship is our coming into God s presence by his command, and not our command that he come into our presence. - 3 -

God Cleanses Us The biblical response to God s call to be in his presence is confessing our sins. We humble ourselves when we approach our God. This is a corporate prayer of all God s people. It is a great privilege of the gospel that we can stand forgiven before the Lord of glory. *TO THEE I COME To Thee I come a sinner poor, and wait for mercy at Thy door Indeed I ve nowhere else to flee, O God be merciful to me To Thee I come a sinner weak, and scarce know how to pray or speak From fear and weakness set me free, O God be merciful to me To Thee I come a sinner vile, upon me Lord vouchsafe to smile Mercy through blood I make my plea, O God be merciful to me To Thee I come a sinner great, and well Thou knowest all my state Yet full forgiveness is with Thee, O God be merciful to me To Thee I come a sinner lost, nor have I aught wherein to trust But where Thou art Lord I would be, O God be merciful to me To glory bring me Lord at last, and there when all my sins are past With all the saints I ll then agree, God was merciful to me COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Deuteronomy 32:4; 5:32-33 The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. You shall be careful therefore to do as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. All: O Lord, my every sense and affection is a snare to me. I can scarce open my eyes but I envy those above me or I despise those below. I covet the honor and riches of the mighty and I am proud and unmerciful to the poverty of others. When I see beauty it is a bait to lust. When I see deformity, it stirs up loathing and disdain. I slander those made in your image and I allow godless speech to creep out of my heart. Forgive me Lord Jesus. Cleanse me from my sin both my outward acts and the sinful thoughts of my heart. Wash me that I would be clean. - 4 -

SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Psalm 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. *AMAZING GRACE - Hymn #460, vs. 1-3, 6 Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. When we ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise than when we first begun. - 5 -

OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Fellowship Hall) Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) BEHOLD OUR GOD Who has held the oceans in his hands? Who has numbered every grain of sand? Kings and nations tremble at his voice. All creation rises to rejoice. (Chorus) Behold our God, seated on his throne. Come let us adore him. Behold our King, nothing can compare. Come let us adore him! Who has given counsel to the Lord? Who can question any of his words? Who can teach the one who knows all things? Who can fathom all his wondrous deeds? (Chorus) Who has felt the nails upon his hands, bearing all the guilt of sinful man? God eternal, humbled to the grave, Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign! (Chorus) You will reign forever, you will reign forever! (2x) (Chorus) - 6 -

Summer Psalms and Proverbs Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. Why Psalms? - Psalm 1 (ESV) Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. Exodus 15:1-6 I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. 2 The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him. 3 The LORD is a man of war; the LORD is his name. 4 "Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. 5 The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. 6 Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy. Psalm 15:1-3 A1. Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary? A2. Who may live on your holy hill? B1. He whose walk is blameless B2. and who does what is righteous. C1. who speaks the truth from his heart C2. and has no slander on his tongue. D1. who does his neighbor no wrong D2. and casts no slur on his fellow man. - 7 -

Summer Psalms and Proverbs Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. Why Psalms? - Psalm 1 (ESV) Sermon Outline I. Introduction: Poetry is for people who can t do math II. A Microphone for the Church III. A Mirror for the Soul - 8 -

Sermon Questions For Further Reflection 1. Poetry is a heightened and artistic use of natural language. It is not just information about an event but it includes our experience of it. How does this help us in understanding the Psalms? 2. Consider: The Psalter is a repository of doctrine, of the teaching of the Bible, but doctrine as processed through the heart and turned to prayer, the best kind of doctrine there is!...you cannot really understand and appreciate the teaching of the Word of God until you can pray it, until you can stand on it and make it part of an argument that you are having with your heavenly Father, an argument of faith. These poems and hymns present us with life at the deeper level of the mind and the heart. Robert Rayburn 3. Hebrew poetry uses parallelism rather than rhyme. How does that affect our interpretation? Exodus 15: 1-18 is a song of God s deliverance. How does this communicate in a way that prose does not? 4. For the most part, images in the Psalm are not meant to be taken literally. Why does our present culture struggle so much with this idea? How does it lead to great mistakes in interpretation? 5. What is the value of having artistic songs sung in worship? Why has corporate singing mattered so much for God s people throughout history? What are some current challenges that we face regarding this today? God Consecrates Us Consecrate means to make holy, to set apart. The Word of God does that for the lives of believers. Through the sermon, confessions of faith, and the offering we are sanctified for service to our Lord to joyfully offer up our lives to him. 6. In 1 Chronicles 16:4-6; 25:1-7, David appoints various Levites to minister in song at the temple. Public worship using the Psalms has always been a part of worship to the Lord. What does this tell us about how God has made us? 7. Consider: The New Testament transforms our understanding of the Psalms as we read it in light of the coming of Jesus Christ. Tremper Longman. In what ways do we see this? All Music Copied Under CCLI License #34680-9 -

*GOD OF WONDERS Lord of all creation, of water, earth and sky. The heavens are your tabernacle; glory to the Lord on high. (Chorus) God of wonders beyond our galaxy you are holy, holy. The universe declares your majesty; you are holy, holy. Lord of heaven and earth. Lord of heaven and earth. Early in the morning, I will celebrate the light. When I stumble in the darkness, I will call your name by night. (Chorus) God Communes with Us The Lord strengthens and nourishes our faith through a sacramental meal. Through Jesus, communion with God has been reestablished. The covenant has been renewed. The Lord s Supper is the gospel made visible for us and we share in it as the full community of God s people. (Bridge) Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth. Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth. Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth. You are holy, holy. God of wonders beyond our galaxy you are holy, holy. Precious Lord reveal your heart to me; you are holy, holy. The universe declares your majesty; you are holy, holy. Lord of heaven and earth. Lord of heaven and earth. *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to our Lord God. All: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Leader: It is indeed good, right, and our delight that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto You, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. - 10 -
