The Word Became Flesh The Book of John Lesson 15 The Upper Room Discourse John 13:31-14:7 REFLECTION Review John 13:1-30. How will you implement Jesus example of washing the feet of those in your life? What warning do you receive from looking at Judas? FOCUS VERSE Jesus said to him, I AM the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6). SECTION 1 Jesus Announces His Departure Jesus had just finished lavishing His love on His disciples by washing their feet. Continuing the fellowship around the table at the Last Supper, Jesus began to teach, warn, and give promises regarding the future. Read John 13:31-35 with John 13:18-30. 1. Who had gone out from the supper (vs. 31, 13:26-30)? What time of the day was it? 2. What was the first thing Jesus said to the remaining disciples (vs. 31, 32)? 1 What did Jesus call Himself? What hour had finally come (John 12:23)? 1 glorified: Jesus would be revealed as the divine Son of God and Savior of the world by His death and resurrection.

LOOK DEEPER According to these Scriptures, why is Jesus referred to as the Son of Man? Matthew 1:21-23 Matthew 16:13-17 John 6:42 3. What did Jesus call His disciples in John 13:33? What did He say to them? 4. What new commandment 2 did Jesus give (vs. 34, 35)? Who is the great example? If one obeys this commandment what will others know? Do those around you know that you are a disciple of Christ because of your love? What is the evidence? 2 new commandment: the old Mosaic law declared, Love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). Jesus new standard was, as I have loved you. 2

LOOK DEEPER What do these Scriptures, in the Gospels 3, teach you about this Commandment of Jesus to love? Matthew 22:36-40 4 Mark 12:29, 31 Luke 10:25-28 What can you learn about the enormity of God s love? John 3:16 Romans 5:8 I John 4:10 5 Which word or phrase in these Scriptures speaks to you most deeply? What must you do to receive God s love? 3 Gospels: the story of Jesus; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 4 Law and the Prophets: the first four commandments deal with loving God, the last six with man s responsibilities toward each other. It is the same with all the books of the Law and the Prophets. 5 propitiation: a means whereby sin is covered, dismissed and forgiven. 3

SECTION 2 Jesus Predicts Peter s Denial Read John 13:36-38. Jesus and Peter had an intimate conversation. 1. In an intimate conversation, what did Peter ask Jesus (vs. 36)? How did Jesus answer? 2. What did Peter believe he could do (vs. 37)? Knowing Peter s heart, what did Jesus reveal to him? LOOK DEEPER Compare the other Gospel accounts of Jesus prediction of Peter s denial. What additions to the words of Jesus do you see recorded? Matthew 26:30-35 Mark 14:26-31 What did the other disciples say? Luke 22:31-34 Peter did not take heed and went on to deny Christ three times (see John 18:15-27). How do the following Scriptures warn and comfort you? Luke 22:31, 32 4

I Corinthians 10:12, 13 Jude 24 SECTION 3 Jesus Comforts His Disciples Read John 14:1-3.
