O You better not shout... you better not cry, you better not pout I m telling you why. We all know the next line. And yes, Christmas is about children and presents and family and food and song, possibly a little too much indulgence, all followed by an afternoon nap. Christmas is traditonally a Christian religious holiday, where they celebrate the birth of Christ. But you don t have to be Christian to share and celebrate the meaning of Christmas. Christmas is about giving. Not presents. Giving. Of your time, of your ear, a hug when needed, a helping hand, as well as presents. Many are not fortunate enough to have a roof over their head, nevermind able to afford a fancy Christmas dinner and expensive presents wrapped in colourful paper under a decorated tree with flashing lights (especially with the increasing cost of power in this country). If you are fortunate enough to have all of the above, perhaps take a moment to think of those less fortunate. There are simple ways that you can help, and they don t have to cost a fortune. If you have the money you can donate food and gifts. Many charities collect for families at Christmas, the Salvation Army, Christmas Box and Variety to name just a few. Or you can buy an extra gift when doing the Christmas shopping and leave it under the K-Mart Wishing Tree. Then there is your time. The charities that collect food and gifts need help packing and distributing the donated items. You might not have the money to donate to the boxes, but contributing your time is just as valuable. Or perhaps you can donate your time and culinary skills to the Dunedin Community Christmas Dinner. The dinner is held each Christmas in the Dunedin Town Hall and is especially intended to help those who have no one else to be with on Christmas Day, or who perhaps don t know anyone, or perhaps cannot readily afford Christmas treat food. But Christmas is not about feeling obligated, it is about giving from your heart. If your time is best donated to your family and friends, then that is just as important. Tell people that you love them, spend quality time with them, enjoy and celebrate Christmas and life together in this lucky country. Whether you call him Santa Claus, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale or just good old Father Christmas..it s December and he is coming to town! Wishing you a Merry Christmas / Koa Kirihimete from everyone at the Mosgiel Holistic Centre.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD We all have our own traditions at Christmas. Some are old family traditions that only your family follow, others are Christian traditions such as midnight mass or carols by candlelight. However, there are some different and unusual traditions fro around the world that you have most probably never heard of. THE PHILLIPINES GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL The Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul Sampernandu) is held each year on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando the Christmas Capital of the Philippines. Eleven barangays (villages) take part in the festival and competition is fierce as everyone pitches in trying to build the most elaborate lantern. Originally, the lanterns were simple creations around half a metre in diameter, made from papel de hapon (Japanese origami paper) and lit by candle. Today, the lanterns are made from a variety of materials and have grown to around six metres in size. Electric bulbs that sparkle in a kaleidoscope of patterns illuminate them. SWEDEN GÄVLE GOAT Since 1966, a 13-metre-tall Yule Goat has been built in the centre of Gävle s Castle Square for the Advent, but this Swedish Christmas tradition has unwittingly led to another tradition of sorts people trying to burn it down. Since 1966 the Goat has been successfully burned down 29 times the most recent destruction was in 2016. AUSTRIA KRAMPUS A beast-like demon creature that roams city streets frightening kids and punishing the bad ones nope, this isn t Halloween, but St. Nicholas evil accomplice, Krampus. In Austrian tradition, St. Nicholas rewards nice little boys and girls, while Krampus is said to capture the naughtiest children and whisk them away in his sack. In the first week of December, young men dress up as the Krampus (especially on the eve of St. Nicholas Day) frightening children with clattering chains and bells. JAPAN KENTUCKY FRIED CHRISTMAS DINNER Christmas has never been a big deal in Japan. Aside from a few small, secular traditions such as gift-giving and light displays, Christmas remains largely a novelty in the country. However, a new, quirky tradition has emerged in recent years a Christmas Day feast of the Colonel s very own Kentucky Fried Chicken. The festive menu is advertised on the KFC Japan website and, even if you don t understand Japanese, the pictures sure will look delicious with everything from a Christmas-themed standard bucket to a premium roast-bird.
ICELAND THE YULE LADS In the 13 days leading up to Christmas, 13 tricksy troll-like characters come out to play in Iceland. The Yule Lads (jólasveinarnir or jólasveinar in Icelandic) visit the children across the country over the 13 nights leading up to Christmas. For each night of Yuletide, children place their best shoes by the window and a different Yule Lad visits leaving gifts for nice girls and boys and rotting potatoes for the naughty ones!!! GERMANY ST NIKOLAUS DAY Not to be confused with Weihnachtsmann (Father Christmas), Nikolaus travels by donkey in the middle of the night on December 6 (Nikolaus Tag) and leaves little treats like coins, chocolate, oranges and toys in the shoes of good children all over Germany, and particularly in the Bavarian region. St. Nikolaus also visits children in schools or at home and in exchange for sweets or a small present each child must recite a poem, sing a song or draw a picture. In short, he s a great guy. But it isn't always fun and games. St. Nick often brings along Knecht Ruprecht (Farmhand Rupert). A devil-like character dressed in dark clothes covered with bells and a dirty beard, Knecht Ruprecht carries a stick or a small whip in hand to punish any children who misbehave. NORWAY HIDE YOUR BROOMS Perhaps one of the most unorthodox Christmas Eve traditions can be found in Norway, where people hide their brooms. Its a tradition that dates back centuries to when people believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve looking for brooms to ride on. To this day, many people still hide their brooms in the safest place in the house to stop them from being stolen. VENEZUELA SKATE TO CHURCH Love Christmas, but think a spot of roller-blading could improve it? If the answer is yes, visit Caracas in Venezuela. Every Christmas Eve, the city s residents head to church in the early morning so far, so normal but, for reasons known only to them, they do so on roller skates. This unique tradition is so popular that roads across the city are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety, before heading home for the less-than-traditional Christmas dinner of tamales (a wrap made out of cornmeal dough and stuffed with meat, then steamed). COLOMBIA DAY OF THE LITTLE CANDLES Little Candles Day (Día de las Velitas) marks the start of the Christmas season across Colombia. In honour of the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception, people place candles and paper lanterns in their windows, balconies and front yards.
A subtle gift for Christmas By John Mills I was about to take a hammer to Mr Piggy Bank when a thought struck me why destroy the one bank in my life that never charges me interest or fees. So Mr Piggy Bank got to live another day. Truth be told there is not much in there. So what to give and receive at this time of year that costs nothing, but has more value than a bar of gold. The subtext of listening! What does that mean you ask? Sorry I did not hear that! A classic example is when your nine year old wakes up on a school day and says they have a tummy ache. Yes we can bring out the cod liver oil and that in truth may solve the issue. If however we listen more closely to the subtext we may discover that our child is being bullied at school or is anxious about what may be taking place that day. Another classic is does my bum look big in these jeans? The correct answer is not to answer! However the subtext is more important as the person could be expressing their lack of confidence in how they look, or wanting to find out if you notice them or still find them attractive. It is the subtle art of listening to what is truly being said behind the words being expressed. Last example: You work too hard! Yes that may be the truth on the surface but behind that may be; I miss you; I am worried about your health etc. Lets take that one step further to a more important person saying something to someone YOU! When you say something to someone ask yourself a very simple but difficult question. Is this really what I want to say or ask? Can you imagine what a gift it would be to your loved ones if instead of berating them for working such long hours you could express your need for their company, or express your love through your concern for their health and ultimately telling them straight that you are frightened you may not get to share a long healthy life with them if they work so hard. What a different Christmas it would be if we truly heard one another and said what we really mean rather than hiding the truth. So here goes. I want to wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and a safe new year. What I really want to say is I would like you to remember how to have fun this Christmas with low alcohol intake and no family violence. Your children are not the cause of your shitty life so don t make them the scapegoat. Remember not to take out your anger and alcohol consumption on the roads so that everyone s loved ones come home safely. Make sure you can look back on this festive time as one where you took responsibility with fun for all. My love to you all John
