Dear Peace Family, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13. Where there is smoke, there s fire. Wow, does that old adage ever ring true for western Montana this year! As I write this, the most recent count records 21 wildfires in the Treasure State this summer. We pray for rain, though not much relief is in the forecast for the next 2 weeks at least. Our hot, dry weather pattern continues due to a lingering jet stream. On summers like this we often look to the October snows in the high country to finally extinguish the wildfires. Still we know that our creator God is not captive to any weather forecast or jet stream so we continue to pray in earnest for rain- or even early snowfall for that matter! Now if you are reading this you may wonder what in the world Rom. 15:13 has to do with wildfires and praying for rainfall. The link is found in two absolutely essential words for the Christian found in this verse: trust and hope. In significant ways, the hope of the Christian is what separates us from those who do not know or believe in the Triune God of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Their hope is primarily based on themselves- their knowledge, their abilities, their resourcefulness, and so forth. It is not in God. Thus, they trust only in what they can verify with their mind and with their 5 senses. Christians pray because we trust in God. We trust not only in His willingness to hear our prayers but in His power to answer them. And therein lies our hope. Our God of hope can do for us all that is beyond our own power and reasoning to do. For example, we can t control the weather, to make it rain, but we trust that God can and so we hope that he brings rain upon our parched forests, fields, and pastures. Friends in Christ, we pray because we trust. Because we trust, we have hope. Our hope in God and our trust in God are two rock-solid foundations in which our prayers, and our Christian lives, are built upon. Yes, where there s smoke there is fire, but where there s prayer- there you will find the Christian. Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 3

Dear Family at Peace. As we enter the month of September, I imagine that the question in everyone s mind is: Where d the summer go? School is now in session and we slide back into routines that are familiar for most months of the year. Those routines fill up the days of our calendars. Commitments to programs and groups resume, making our free time in short supply. While the pace of our schedules picks up a bit, I hope you won t forget the activities at PLC which are also filling the calendar. We will begin our Sunday School program for youth and adults on Sunday, September 17 th. The focus in the first few months will be on the Protestant Reformation. This October 31 st will mark the 500 th anniversary of when Martin Luther posted his 95 Thesis on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. In honor of this, we will turn our attention to the characters and events that surrounded that historic day and what resulted after words which ignited the seismic change in church history. Both kid s and adult programs will familiarize themselves with the person, work and impact of Dr. Martin Luther and of what became the Lutheran Church. This year s confirmation program will also begin by looking at Luther and the Catechism. Be on the lookout for more activities that will help us further understand and appreciate our great heritage which is summed up in The Solae which encapsulates the essence of the Reformation argument that we are saved by grace, through faith and know this only by what Scripture teaches. Sola Scriptura or, scripture alone Sola fide or, faith alone Sola gratia or, only grace Solus Christus or, only Christ Soli Deo gloria or, glory to God alone It is through the merits of Christ only that we are saved and our good works are for the glory of the Father. These Solae serve to give a synopsis of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that was understood at the beginning of the Reformation and once again needs to be understood by all. May this time of remembrance of what makes up who we are, renew our faith and ignite our lives as disciples of the living Christ. Gratefully, Pr. Bob 4

Dear Peace Family, After living in the Gallatin Valley for many years we are heading out on a new adventure. We have sold our home in Belgrade and are moving to Park City, MT--about 25 miles west of Billings. It all came about quickly and although we are sad to leave so many friends, especially all of our wonderful friends here at Peace, we are excited to be moving closer to most of our children and grandchildren. We are also looking forward to a little slower pace of life away from all the crazy growth that is happening around Belgrade and Bozeman. Park City is not that far away and we would love to have you come and visit if you are in the area. Our phone numbers and email addresses will remain the same. We feel blessed to have been part of such a caring, loving church family. We are so very thankful for all the love and support you showed us when Wayne was ill last fall. You are truly a shining example of God's love at work. We will miss all of you. Prayers and love, Wayne and Lynn Johnson 9
