ST JOHN PAUL II CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL Volume 17 11 th October 2018 School Charisms Compassion, Forgiveness & Desire for Unity In Harmony Nidja Noongar Boodjar Noonook Nyininy School Prayer Lord Jesus, Through St John Paul II and in the spirit of harmony, gift us with Compassion to better understand and care for each other Forgiveness to restore relationships and A desire for unity to live peacefully with each other Amen. St John Paul II Feast Day - 22 nd October Oh, St. John Paul II, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing! Bless the church that you loved and served and guided, courageously leading it along the paths of the world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who were your great passion. Help them dream again, help them look up high again to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth. Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice. You tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that we may be tireless sowers of peace. Amen. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11) Do not forget that true love sets no conditions; it does not calculate or complain, but simply loves. (St John Paul II) Dear Parents Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful holiday break. It s hard to believe we re in the last term of the year which will undoubtedly go as quickly as the previous terms. It s a great time to take the opportunity to chat to your child about what challenges, goals and hopes they have for the remaining 8 weeks of this school year. I would like to thank Mr Maxwell for his work in the principal role during my long service leave break. I ve heard many positive comments! Thanks also to the staff for being prepared to help out when required. Phone: 9303 7101 Fax: 9404 8777 SMS Absentee Line: 0438 404 375 Email: admin@sjpiicps.wa.edu.au

Athletics Carnival Last term we had a wonderful athletics carnival. Thanks to the P&F for their support, parents who helped on the day in various roles and to the teachers for their hard work leading up to the carnival. Congratulations to Mrs Cullen on organising a very successful event! School Feast Day Celebrations On Monday 22 October, children will be able to come in free dress (for a gold coin donation). There will be a liturgy to start the day followed by a rotation focussing on each of the school charisms. Children will have the opportunity between recess and lunch to purchase goodies and participate in fun activities organised by the various classes. Money raised will support some charities linked to the school community. Further information is in this newsletter. God Bless Mr Lamb Principal THE UNDERCOVER AREA TRANSFORMATION HAS BEGUN!! A big, big thank you to the 50+ people from our school and parish community who were able to come along and remove all the pavers from the undercover area within 90minutes!!! The concrete has now been poured. At the end of the term the top coat will be applied, leaving the area not only looking much nicer, but also making it so much easier to keep clean!

CENTRED ON JESUS CHRIST Year 3 and 4 Cluster Mass Toward the end of last term, we had a wonderful turn out of Year 3 and 4 children to the Cluster Mass to support our Parish Community. It was a wonderful way for the children to play a special role in the weekend Mass and their participation is always greatly appreciated by our Parish community. Our School Feast Day It s been a few years since we ve been able to celebrate St John Paul II s Feast Day on the actual date (Oct 22) at school. For the last 2 years Oct 22 has fallen on a weekend. This year, the fourth time we will celebrate St John Paul II s Feast Day in a special way at out school, Oct 22 is a Monday!! Here is the exciting schedule of events for this day: 8.30am Short Liturgy to Celebrate our Feast Day 9.00 am School Based Retreat based on the Charisms of our school: Forgiveness, Compassion and Desire for Unity 11.00 am St John Paul II Fun Raising Market Day Stalls each class will be running a stall. The main aim on this day is to celebrate our Feast Day any funds raised will be shared with miscellaneous charities which people in our school community have brought to our attention, which are not one of the dedicated charities we support (Project Compassion, Lifelink, Vietnam Orphanage & St Vincent De Paul). In other years on this Feast day we have supported Wheelchair for Kids, Heart Kids and contributed to building our parish church. The focus of our day is to celebrate, not to raise funds. Children are invited to bring in a small amount of money (eg: $3 to $7) to participate in the stalls. PLEASE NOTE THAT CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO COME IN FREE DRESS ON THIS DAY. THIS WEEK S QUESTION (LET MR MAXWELL KNOW THE ANSWER TO BE IN THE RUNNING FOR A LITTLE PRIZE) What is the date of St John Paul II s Feast Day?

CHARISMS OF ST JOHN PAUL II CATHOLIC PRIMARY In Harmony with our God, St John Paul II Catholic Primary school community endeavours to be characterised by the following charisms: DESIRE FOR UNITY We value our relationship with Jesus, who is central to all we do. We build a relationship with Jesus through valuing and nurturing relationships with all others. As one family in Christ, we include others, create a sense of belonging for each member of our community, we respect the dignity of others, and celebrate the diversity of cultures in our community. may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me (John 17) Friendship, as has been said, consists in a full commitment of the will to another person with a view to that person's good. (St John Paul II) COMPASSION Compassion motivates us to go out of our way to help others experiencing physical, spiritual, or emotional hurts and pains. We recognise the dignity of all people since they are created in God s image and likeness. Like Christ we want to be always welcoming, loving and generous in our response to others. (St John Paul II) FORGIVENESS We offer forgiveness. We distinguish between the actions of others which may be hurtful, and the person themselves. Through forgiveness, we restore relationships and give value to them. In Jesus and in St John Paul II we find perfect models of forgiveness. When we make mistakes, we ask for forgiveness, and seek to restore relationships. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. (Luke 6) But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5) Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. (James 5:16) Forgiveness is above all a personal choice, a decision of the heart to go against the natural instinct to pay back evil with evil. (St John Paul II)

P & F President Mrs S Piek Dear Parent/Guardian RE: School Run4 Fun Colour Explosion Parent Consent Thank you to date for your support with the School Run4FunColour Explosion. We are well and truly on our way to reach our fundraising goal. The event is only weeks away which is very exciting. It is our responsibility to seek permission for your child to participate in the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion. All measures have been taken to ensure that this event is safe for all students. There will be various colour powder stations throughout the course with two designated lanes one for colour powder, the other with no powder. Your child can still participate in the event should you not wish for them to be sprayed with colour powder. The staff will do their best to throw the powder at the torso, however wind and other factors can cause the powder to protrude on the face. You may wish for your child to bring their own eye protection such as sunglasses or goggles. The colour powder used in the event is non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally friendly consisting of 98% corn starch and 2% food colouring. It will likely washout of your child s clothing, however we recommend that your child wears a plain white shirt that you don t mind being coloured. That s what the event is all about! Based on the toxicology profiles of the powders used, their concentrations in the formulation and the mode of use, the colour powder is considered safe for use. Students with lung issues such as asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to participate. Should you wish to view the ingredient listings and toxicology risk assessment of the powder, please see the staff in the Administration Office. Get ready for a BLAST OF COLOUR, and thanks in advance for your support! Happy fundraising!
