From the Finance Council Dear Fellow Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica, Recently we sent you the operating financial statement of our parish for the period July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. We encourage you to read this closely, but here are some of the highlights as we see them: Our parish continues to provide an ever-increasing number of services and ministries to our parishioners. This is the future of a healthy parish, but it requires an increasing number of lay volunteers and associated expenses. We have been in the fortunate position of having the resources, especially the many dedicated people who devote their time and energies to their neighbors, fellow parishioners and to others outside our parish. Our parish operating expenses continue to be under strict control, both church and school, with staffing being maintained at the right levels and materials, supplies and utilities being purchased at the right cost and at the right times. Our school remains very strong, with 657 students during the period. Parents provide 92% of the direct operating costs of the school, which clearly demonstrates their commitment to a quality Catholic education for their children. On the other hand, maintenance and repairs will continue to grow as our buildings age, despite closely attentive and regularly scheduled inspections. Just as our own homes require increased maintenance costs over time, so too will our beautiful and valued parish properties. More significantly, our parish Sunday collections have remained level for several years. Perhaps this might be sufficient for some parishes, but it is not enough for us. Our future depends on doing more for ourselves and that will require more financial resources. Just as important is the matter of our Basilica ceiling, which is a capital expense not reflected in the operating statement. We have mentioned a number of times the unfortunate and sudden need to replace our entire ceiling this year. Due to the prudent foresight of those who came before us we were in the fortunate position of being able to fund the over $1.3 million cost of the project from our savings. However, prudence also dictates that our savings must be replenished in the coming years. What does this mean? We must increase our Sunday collections immediately and substantially. What do we ask? We know that we have many faithful supporters, who provide for their church on a regular basis. We are extraordinarily grateful for their efforts. Without them we would not be able to be where we are today. We have not asked for a Sunday collection increase for several years, but now we must. At this time, we ask that you consider an immediate increase in your Sunday offertory of a minimum of 10%, and hopefully more if you can afford it. We know that many of our parishioners stretch themselves to support our parish, which is why our average Sunday envelope contains about $35 per week. Others certainly have the ability to support our parish beyond that average. We know that our fellow parishioners always do the right thing when they are given the facts, and that is why we confidently lay before you the situation we now face. As always, if you have any questions about our financial condition or the various ways you can provide an increase in your support, please contact our business office at 773.736.6060. Sincerely yours, 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL John Andrus John Conway Randy Darlak James DeRose Dennis Hammer Lou Manfredini Neal McNamara Rico Ramos Sandra Wisniewski

Parish News There was no room in the Inn A Portrait of Homelessness in Chicago During Advent, it is important to recall the difficulties Mary and Joseph faced as they prepared for Jesus birth. One of those difficulties was that there was no room for them in the Inn. The Christmas crèche is not a top-notch hospital but a stable, a hut, complete with animals. The scene also reminds us of the poverty into which Jesus was born. Advent is also a time when we might reflect on the ways we can make room for Jesus in our hearts and in our lives. In this way, we give Jesus the place he deserves. And when we open our hearts to Jesus, he asks us to love your neighbor as yourself. Some of our neighbors are homeless people who live in Chicago. Most likely we don t know them too well. Maybe we have seen them begging on the street corners, or huddling in the doorways to sleep. Love your neighbor as yourself. Maybe one step we could take in memory of the Holy Family s homelessness, is to meet in a virtual way some of our homeless neighbors. After all of the Masses on December 9 and 10, Queen of All Saints will host the exhibit A Portrait of Homelessness in Chicago. The exhibit is provided through Franciscan Outreach ministries. There will be a ten minute presentation by Mr. Ed Jacob, Franciscan Outreach Executive Director or Ms. Laura Reilly, Franciscan Outreach Development Director. The exhibit presents portraits of homeless people, along with their stories and 6 minute video. The exhibit is appropriate for older children, youth and adults. At a time when some people focus on their lists of wants, this event can help us to remember the needs of other people. Will you make room? When: Where: December 9 after 5PM Mass December 10 immediately after 6:45, 8, 9:30, 11, 12:30 Masses QAS Cafeteria Refreshments will be offered Further information or to volunteer to help contact Carole Eipers at the rectory. O God of all the nations, the One God who is and was and always will be, in your providence you willed that your Church be united to the suffering of your Son. Look with mercy on your servants who are persecuted for their faith in you. Grant them perseverance and courage to be worthy imitators of Christ. Bring your wisdom upon leaders of nations to work for peace among all peoples. May your Spirit open conversion for those who contradict your will, that we may live in harmony. Give us the grace to be united in truth and freedom, and to always seek your will in our lives. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us. Prayer composed by Archbishop William E. Lori, Baltimore Fifth Grade Family Mass Saturday December 9th 5:00pm Mass The School and R.E. students will be participating in the annual Share Christmas program. S tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 26, 2017 whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me - MATTHEW 25:40 Most of us are generous when it s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one s time, money, compassion, forgiveness or mercy when it s not convenient; when it s not on our schedule, but on the other person s schedule. Stewardship Thankgiving Prayer Thanksgiving is an American holiday with a distinctly religious foundation, one with a special focus on our obligation of stewardship and generosity to each other. This year, as we gather together as families and friends, let us pray: Father in Heaven, Creator of all and source of all goodness and love, please look kindly upon us and receive our heartfelt gratitude in this time of giving thanks. Thank you for all the graces and blessings. You have betowed upon us, spiritual and temporal: our faith and religious heritage. Our food and shelter, our health, the loves we have for one another, our family and friends. Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please grant us continued graces and blessing throughout the coming year. This we ask in the Name of Jesus, Your Son and our Brother. Amen. In Thanksgiving for the Benedictine sisters who served our parish school with devotion for so many years A window in the Basilica depicts St. Benedict, the great 6th Century religious figure who today is recognized as the father of Western Monasticism. Our QAS School was long staffed by sisters belonging to the Order of St Benedict, and in their honor our former convent is known as the Benedict Center. The Benedict Center is now the primary focus of our Capital Campaign From Generation to Generation, which will repurpose that building for use in our parish for decades to come. Please consider adding your pledge to our campaign. Contact our business office at 773.736.6060 for further information. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. Our Ceiling Status Our project is nearly complete for this year, with the choir loft scheduled to begin after Christmas. We hope you are as excited as we are to see the fruits of our careful planning and the superb workmanship of our contractor crew. Thanks to all for your outstanding patience as we continue this very major project. This has been a once in a lifetime chance to do it right and, as careful and prudent stewards of our parish resources, we promise that your faithful support and continued attendance at Mass despite the inconvenience will be rewarded when the full results of the project are revealed! If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 26, 2017 15
