EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD ALLELUIA! We are the Easter people and Alleluia is our song. Pope John Paul II For the 40 days of Lent, the word Alleluia is gone from the liturgy of the Church. It is never said - not even once. Then, during the Easter Vigil, the Priest intones the great Alleluia and it seems like the Church can t stop repeating this word over and over again. Why is that? Alleluia (sometimes written Hallelujah ) is rooted in a Hebrew expression that means Praise the Lord. It is found most often as a type of antiphon that is repeated at the end of the Psalms. It is also found in the Book of Tobit, where it is referenced as a hymn of praise to be sung in the new Jerusalem. The gates of Jerusalem shall be built of sapphire, and of emerald, and all the walls thereof round about of precious stones. All its streets shall be paved with white and clean stones: and Alleluia shall be sung in its streets. It is also found in the Book of Revelation and as the voice of great thunders, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord our God the Almighty hath reigned. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give glory to Him; for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath prepared herself. Saint Jerome is responsible for the translation of the Hebrew expression to the word Alleluia in the Latin Vulgate, which was then used in the Roman liturgy. It is, and always has been, an expression of praise, glorifying God for His goodness. For this reason, Alleluia is closely associated with a season of joy, and is in stark contrast with the somber penitential attitude of Lent. Easter is a period of great joy and exultation, and singing Alleluia is the Church s way to highlight this reality, continually giving praise and honor to God. Alleluia! TODAY S READINGS First Reading Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). (1) Second Reading All who are baptized, set your hearts on heaven (Colossians 3:1-4) or (2) Second Reading Christ our Passover is sacrificed; therefore let us celebrate (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8). Gospel Three witnesses, Mary, Peter, and John; each responds to the empty tomb (John 20:1-9) or Luke 24:1-12 (or, at an afternoon or evening Mass, Luke 24:13-35). +EASTER MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR+ Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Alleluia! On this golden Easter Sunday morning everything the Spring weather, the flowers, birds, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful liturgy and music everything seems to bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Alleluia!! Like the eyewitness accounts in today s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing Alleluia! Today, our Parish Family gathers to celebrate the glory of the Risen Christ. The cross of unspeakable pain and death has been transformed into the triumphant cross. Outside our Church, surrounded by beautiful flowers, and with its white shroud gently blowing in the breeze, this triumphant cross will stand throughout the entire Easter season. It will be our constant reminder of Christ s great love for us, and of His total victory over sin and death. May the cross always be a sign of life and hope and a reminder to us of His everlasting love. Today, we gather as an Easter people, not to focus on an empty tomb, but rather, to celebrate our Christian belief in a Risen Jesus who is Lord and Savior, the conqueror of both sin and death. Because we have been blessed with the vision of faith, we not only believe, but are able to boldly proclaim to our community, and to the whole world our Easter proclamation, Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Alleluia! On this day of our Lord s glorious Resurrection, may the Spirit of the Risen Christ always live within you, and may you always have the gift of love, the blessing of hope, and the promise of peace. The Priests and Deacons of St. Catharine s Parish wish all of you and your loved ones a truly grace-filled and joyous Easter. Monsignor Francis McAree Father Abraham Vallayil Deacon John Kelleher Deacon John Jurasek

EASTER MEANS Easter Sunday is the greatest of all Sundays! The word Easter comes from Old English, meaning simply, the East. The sun which rises in the East, bringing light, warmth and hope, is a wonderful symbol for Christians of the Risen Christ, who is the true Light of the World! GRATEFUL FOR YOUR PRESENCE We are very glad that you could be with us during these holiest of days. Whether you are a long-term parishioner of St. Catharine s, a first time visitor, or a college student home on break, we are blessed by your prayerful presence at our liturgy, and we ask God to bless you in return. The Lenten-Easter season evokes many memories for Catholics who may be away from active participation. Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter these powerful days remind us of our Catholic roots. Maybe you have been away for a while, but now you feel a tug at your heart calling you back to the Catholic Church. Listen to that tug! It s your Heavenly Father reaching His arms out to you, the Holy Spirit whispering in your ear, hoping to draw you home! It is never too late to come home, you are always welcome here! GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT Your Easter contribution to Saint Catharine s should be something which truly reflects your love of God and our Parish. Your support makes it possible for St. Catharine s Parish to continue to spread God s word, to celebrate the Eucharist, to offer the Sacraments, and to continue to build the many ministries and charitable activities that are a hallmark of our wonderful parish. Special Easter envelopes may be found on the Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church. Thank you and may God bless you and your loved ones with a truly Blessed Easter. A SPECIAL EASTER THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Easter Ham and Food Drive. With your kindness and generosity, we were able to provide some of our local families in need with Easter Baskets and wonderful Easter Sunday dinners. How blessed we are to be able to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves! ST. CATHARINE S PASSION PLAY As we gathered on Good Friday for this year s Passion Play, the actors reminded us of the love that our wonderful Savior, Jesus Christ, has for us and the price He paid for the forgiveness of our sins. We would like to thank Bruce Neier and Michael Wagner and all of the dedicated families, children and adults who made this year s Passion Play such a wonderful success. WHY DID JESUS FOLD THE NAPKIN? Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded and was placed at the head of that stony coffin. Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!' Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple out ran Peter and got there first. He stopped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side. Is that important? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes! In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition. When the Servant set the dinner table for the Master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the Master wanted it. The table was furnished perfectly, and then the Servant would wait, just out of sight, until the Master had finished eating, and the Servant would not dare touch that table until the Master was finished. Now, if the Master was done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers and mouth with that napkin and toss it onto the table. The Servant would then know to clear the table. For, in those days, the wadded napkin meant, I'm done. But, if the Master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the Servant knew that the folded napkin meant, I'm not finished yet. The folded napkin meant, I'm coming back! EASTER FLOWERS When the lights were turned on at our Holy Saturday Vigil, the beautiful display of hydrangeas, azaleas, mums, and Easter lilies presented us with a beautiful scene which was somehow reminiscent of the scripture verse, How wonderful is your dwelling place, Lord God Almighty Throughout the Easter Season, we will continue to enjoy this beauty and color which is only fitting for the celebration of the Lord s resurrection and the promise of our own future resurrection. A special thank you to Father Abraham and all his helpers for making our Church so very beautiful for all of us to enjoy this Easter season.

THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED FOR EASTER ON MONDAY, APRIL 22 nd If you have an emergency and are in need of a Priest, please phone (845) 359-0542 and listen to the prompts. THE 2019 CARDINAL S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL No one is more generous to us than God. God has given us life; He has blessed us with the gift of faith; He has given us this world to be our home; and He has sent His Son to be our Savior. In return God expects us to be generous: with our love, with our time, with our talents, and with our resources. Our goal, set by the Archdiocese is $131,000 and right now we are at $61,660. Please join your fellow parishioners, prayerfully consider your contribution, and make your gift today. RCIA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Each year on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil, thousands of men and women are received into the Catholic Church in the United States. Parishes welcome these new members through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). RCIA is a series of steps conducted in the context of learning about the faith and spiritual formation, through which a person is fully incorporated in the Body of Christ, the Church. This past Easter, under the education and spiritual guidance of Deacon John Jurasek, Dorianne Deidra Torres Anderson was welcomed into full membership of the Catholic Church. Congratulations and welcome! DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY SERVICE NEXT SUNDAY AT 3 PM IN OUR CHAPEL St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish Nun, was gifted with mystical visions of our Lord Jesus. Her diary records her dialogue with Jesus as He proclaimed His message of mercy. Then I heard the words, I am glad you behaved like My true daughter. Be always merciful as I am merciful. Love everyone out of love for Me, even your greatest enemies, so that My mercy may be fully reflected in your heart. Jesus requested the Feast of Divine Mercy be celebrated the Sunday after Easter as a time of mercy for all people. It is celebrated with an emphasis on the merciful forgiveness of God and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Please join us for a special Divine Mercy Service in our Chapel next Sunday, starting at 3:00 PM. ST. CATHARINE S ANNUAL BOOSTER CLUB Please note, we have changed the date of our Drawing to Sunday, May 19 th, following the 12:30 PM Mass Tickets are $100 each. The Grand Prize is $8,000! To purchase tickets, you may contact our Booster Club Chairwoman, Judith Scandiffio at 359-1023. The Tabernacle Candle will burn before the Blessed Sacrament the week of April 21 In Loving Memory of Kenny Langan From Judy McElligott For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.
