Evangelism has gotten a bad reputation bringing to mind the image a street corner evangelist announcing that Hell is the destination for all who don t profess Christ. With all the baggage we associate with evangelism, maybe that s why a lot of us try to leave the heavy lifting to other people. It s not that we don t want our friends and family and neighbors to know Christ. We d just be more comfortable if someone else showed them the way. Someone who s good at it. Someone with the gift of evangelism. Just not us. Some Christians are better evangelists than others, no doubt, and there are various levels of calling. But don't be deceived evangelism is for every Christian. Over the past century, evangelism came to be seen as a quick process where people heard the gospel and were expected to make an instant response of conversion and faith. And so as we think about evangelism, there is all this pressure on us to say just the right thing in order to convince someone to make an instant decision for Christ. Yet, faith is a journey. Authentic evangelism is grounded in relationship. As opposed to a street-corner evangelist, evangelism looks more like a series of coffee-shop conversations that builds a friendship between people, and ultimately invites them into friendship with God. The challenge is to rethink evangelism by thinking of the relationships we already have and could develop. We have to remember that God has placed people in our lives as gifts to us, and us as a gift to them. I encourage you to pray for your friends, co-workers, classmates, neighbors, and family members. Ask God to open your eyes for opportunities to build relationships and to all the little moments when you could share God s love and share your faith in Jesus. Are there people that God is nudging you to invite to worship or to special church events? Is there someone with whom God is calling you to spend some time, to go out to lunch or coffee, and to get simply get to know better? Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:19 to go and make disciples, not to remain in the church and wait for people to come. Our Evangelism Committee has been renamed the Reaching New People Team in recognition of our mission to go out into our community--- our stores, our workplaces, our schools, our restaurants and coffee shops, our families and friends---and to build relationships where we can naturally share our faith. And this is truly good news that is something that everyone can do. Blessings, Pastor Melissa

March 1, 2017 Worship Services Special Kid-Friendly Service at Raise the Roof @ 5:30 PM Ash Wednesday Worship with the Imposition of Ashes 7:00 PM The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship, and the Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. This practice is the historic focus of Ash Wednesday observance and gave the day its name. It is traditional to save the palm branches from the previous Passion/Palm Sunday service and burn them ahead of time to produce the ashes for this service. w w w. r e d l a n d - u m c. o r g email : inquiries@redland-umc.org 5
