The Mass o the Resurrection is a work that develoed over a eriod o more than twenty years. The ria in excelsis was coosed irst, in 1982, as a estive anthem or John R. Lively and the roessional choir o the Third Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, PA to mark the church s 150th anniversary. It was coosed or choir, our soloists, and organ and received its remiere in the sring o 1983 with Dr. Lively conducting and the cooser at the organ. The ria in excelsis was reworked slightly the soloist arts were rescored or choir and arts or brass quintet and tiani were written or Easter services in the magniicent Gothic chael o Princeton University or Easter Day services in 1985. There it was erormed by members o the Syhonic and Westminster Choirs rom Westminster Choir College and was conducted by the cooser. It was not until ten or twelve years later that the ria in excelsis resuraced and the other movements o the Mass Ordinary were coosed. The Kyrie eleison, Sanctus and Benedictus, and the Agnus Dei were added and the entire work was given its remiere erormance at the Easter Day services at Christ Church, New Haven, Connecticut in 1998. On that occasion the cooser conducted the Mass with Stuart Forster at the organ (brass instruments were not used on Easter Day at Christ Church.) Kyrie eleison Kyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie Eleison Lord have mercy Lord have mercy Christ have mercy Lord have mercy ria in excelsis ry be to God on high, and on earth eace, good will towards men. We raise thee, we bless thee, we worshi thee, we gloriy thee, we give thanks to thee or thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb o God, Son o the Father, that takest away the sins o the world, have mercy uon us. Thou that takest away the sins o the world, receive our rayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand o God the Father, have mercy uon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory o God the Father. Amen. Mass o the Resurrection Several years later Thomas Foster, then Organist and Choirmaster at All Saints Church, Beverly Hills, Caliornia, called the cooser and asked him to score the entire work or brass and tiani or use at All Saints Church the ollowing Easter. His request was honored and Tom Foster conducted that erormance with the eminent American cooser Craig Phillis at the organ, and suerb brass layers rom Los Angeles laying the newly coosed brass arts. The colete brass arts were subsequently rescored or smaller orces than those used in Beverly Hills and it is this version o the Mass which is here oered. The Mass o the Resurrection is based uon three rincial themes, namely the Solemn Tone o the Gregorian Te Deum laudamus, (the great Hymn o Thanksgiving, We raise thee, O God... ),* the Great Alleluia which is sung thrice at the Great Vigil o Easter, and the slendid Easter Sequence Victimæ Paschali laudes or Christians, to the Paschal Victim These three Easter themes ermeate the Mass thus joining us with those o ast centuries who have sung these same melodies to celebrate the resurrection o the Lord Jesus Christ who has traled down death and won or us the lie eternal. Resurrexit Christi! Alleluia! Robert W. Lehman * Legend holds that the Te Deum laudamus was irovised sontaneously by Saints Ambrose and Augustine at the latter s batism at the Great Vigil o Easter c. 373 AD. Sanctus and Benedictus qui venit Holy, holy, holy, Lord God o Hosts: Heaven and earth are ull o thy glory. ry be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name o the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Agnus Dei O Lamb o God, that takest away the sins o the world, have mercy uon us. O Lamb o God, that takest away the sins o the world, have mercy uon us. O Lamb o God, that takest away the sins o the world, grant us thy eace.
