MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR MAY THE MONTH OF MARY The Way of the Resurrection T here is a wonderful devotion in the Easter season that complements the Way of the Cross in Lent. This devotion of the Way of the Resurrection helps us as we move along towards the Ascension and Pentecost to appreciate all the activity of the Risen Lord to encourage and challenge His disciples to have total faith in Him: 1. Jesus is raised from the dead 2. The finding of the empty tomb - Mary refers 3 x to grave robbers but ironically God Himself robbed the grave 3. Mary Magdalene meets the risen Jesus 4. Jesus appears on the road to Emmaus 5. esus is known in the breaking of bread 6. Jesus appears to the disciples in Jerusalem 7. esus gives the disciples his peace and the power to forgive sins 8. Jesus strengthens the faith of Thomas 9. Jesus appears by the Sea of Tiberias and feeds the apostles 153 fish at the charcoal fire 10. Jesus forgives Peter and commands him to feed His sheep 11. Jesus commissions the disciples upon the mountain 12. The Ascension of Jesus 13. Mary and the disciples wait in prayer 14. The Holy Spirit descends at Pentecost Heavenly Father, around Your throne the Saints sing Your praise forever. Their glory fills us with joy, and their communion with us in the Church gives us inspiration and strength as we move along our journey of faith in Jesus each day. We ask Your blessing in the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord. Amen A few days ago the month of May began, which for many Christian communities is the Marian month par excellence. As such, down the centuries it has become one of the best-loved popular devotions and has been increasingly appreciated by Pastors as a favourable occasion for preaching, catechesis and community prayer. After the Second Vatican Council, which emphasized the role of Mary Most Holy in the Church and in the history of salvation, Marian devotion underwent a profound renewal. And the month of May, coinciding at least in part with the Easter Season, is a most favourable time for explaining the figure of Mary as a Mother who accompanies the community of disciples united in prayer in expectation of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1: 12-14). This month can thus be an opportunity to return to the faith of the primitive Church and, in union with Mary, to understand that our mission also today is to proclaim and witness with courage and joy to the Crucified and Risen Christ, the hope of humanity. H.H. Benedict XVI Regina Cæli Address of May 6, 2007 Are you a parishioner of the Cathedral?
