Liturgy Weekly Reflections Sixth Sunday of Easter A May 25, 2014 Jesus words in this gospel from the Last Supper discourse are reassuring ones: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Yet Thomas and Philip, who hear Jesus also tell them that he is leaving, are not reassured and question him anxiously. The leap from the Jesus at the Last Supper to the Jesus after the resurrection is one giant step, one the disciples have not yet taken. But we have taken this leap. We are an Easter people. We have received the Holy Spirit who empowers us to know Jesus, through him to know the Father, and to do the works of Jesus. Believing this mitigates all troubles, all anxiety. Being troubled and anxious is a fact of our stress-filled lives. Do not be troubled the surgeon says to someone before major surgery; Do not be troubled a parent says to a child wakened by a nightmare; Do not be troubled... The only way we can truly not be troubled is if we put our lives in Jesus hands. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. If simply studying or reading or discussing are your main approaches to God, what else is needed, according to this reading? How does love impact knowledge and understanding in any friendship? And he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth. Discuss Pope Francis statement regarding this statement on the Holy Spirit: To believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in everyone means realizing that he seeks to penetrate every human situation and all social bonds: The Holy Spirit can be said to possess an infinite creativity, proper to the divine mind, which knows how to loosen the knots of human affairs, even the most complex and inscrutable (St. John Paul II 178). The Bishops of Washington State are sponsoring the Cornerstone Conference to inspire and educate Catholics and others to continue working together to protect human life: the unborn, individuals who live in poverty or on the margins of society, and people at the end of life. The committee is asking parishes to have one Mass offered each month, for 9 consecutive months. St John s next Mass for these intentions will be June 16th at 8:30 am. Rosary will start at 8:00 am. The conference will take place October 24/25, 2014 at the Tacoma Convention Center. Visit www.cornerstonecatholic.com for a list of speakers and to register. Next weeks Readings June 1, 2014 The Ascension of the Lord Year A First Reading Acts 1:1 11 Lord Jesus ascends into a cloud. Psalm 47 God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. Second Reading Ephesians 1:17 23 Christ is the head of the church; where he is we are called to follow. Gospel Matthew 28:16 20 Jesus commands us to go and baptize. They worshiped, but they doubted. These words from today s Gospel passage encapsulate the experience of most people of faith. We know who God is supposed to be in our lives, but we have difficulty grasping what that really means for us. Jesus response seems to be to put us right to work, carrying out his mission in the world. As we listen to God s holy word today, perhaps we will find that the best way to overcome our doubts is to encounter Jesus in our lives as we go about doing his work. SERVING GOD AND COUNTRY: A MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE TO OUR HEROES This year we will be honoring the men and women who have served our country with a special tribute during our annual Memorial Day Mass. Memorial Day Mass: Monday, May 26, 2014 10:30am Calvary Cemetery 5041-35 th Ave. NE, Seattle Holyrood Cemetery 205 NE 205 th St., Shoreline St. Patrick Cemetery S. 204 th & Orillia Rd., Kent Gethsemane Cemetery 37600 Pacific Hwy S. Federal Way All are invited. www.mycatholiccemetery.org

St. Joan of Arc Feast day, May 30 1412-1431 Joan of Arc (or Jeanne d Arc, also known as the Maid ) was born in the Lorraine about 1412 and became France s greatest heroine. It was in1429 that she inspired the French army to recapture Orleans and persuaded the dauphin, Charles, to be crowned. She was captured by the Burgundians in 1430 who sold her to their English allies. She was tried and burned at the stake as a witch in Rouen on May 30, 1431. She was not yet nineteen. In 1456, the pope decreed that her conviction was false and that she was a true child of God. it took more than 450 years before the church decided she was indeed a saint. Joan was ultimately canonized in 1920, making official what the people had known for centuries. She was made a saint because of her holiness and faithfulness to God s word; not because of her bravery. Joan was canonized by Pope Benedict XV.
