Eve of Epiphany II Saturday 19 January 2019 5:00 PM Welcome to Saint James this weekend. We welcome you to our live-streamed service. Saint James is a contemplative place in an anxious world. Our services aspire to have a contemplative feel as we weave the three essential elements of contemplative prayer into each mass: silence, stillness, and simplicity. This does not mean an absence of noise or movement but an invitation to explore the interior silence of your own being, resting in the One who loves and redeems you. During silent pauses consider being attentive in this way: Try using the ancient tradition of reciting the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Breathe in the phrase Lord Jesus Christ. Breathe out the phrase have mercy on me. Continue in this way during the times of silence and throughout your day. The early desert mothers and fathers "prayed without ceasing" meditating on this phrase throughout their days. If you are visiting, feel free to fill out a Get Connected card and place it in the offering plate. Or visit us online and complete the form at saintjameslancaster.org/get-connected. The flowers are the Altar are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Julia Marti-Schibler, Inge Marti-Hrabik, and Violet Matti Foote. Tonight s service features the music of Mumford & Sons as played by Chris Keeney & The Duke Street Band.
Gathering Babel 'Cause I know that time has numbered my days And I'll go along with everything you say But I'll ride home laughing, look at me now The walls of my town, they come crumbling down And my ears hear the call of my unborn sons And I know their choices color all I've done But I'll explain it all to the watchman's son, I ain't ever lived a year better spent in love 'Cause I'll know my weakness, know my voice And I'll believe in grace and choice And I know perhaps my heart is farce, But I'll be born without a mask Like the city that nurtured my greed and my pride, I stretched my arms into the sky I cry Babel! Babel! Look at me now Then the walls of my town, they come crumbling down You ask where will we stand in the winds that will howl, As all we see will slip into the cloud So come down from your mountain and stand where we've been, You know our breath is weak and our body thin Press my nose up, to the glass around your heart I should've known I was weaker from the start, You'll build your walls and I will play my bloody part To tear, tear them down, Well I'm gonna tear, tear them down 'Cause I know my weakness, know my voice, And I'll believe in grace and choice And I know perhaps my heart is farce, But I'll be born without a mask
The Opening Acclamation Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession and Forgiveness Silence may be kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
The Collect of the Day Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Liturgy of the Word Isaiah 62:1-5 A reading from the Book of Isaiah. For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 36:5-10 Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, and your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; you save both man and beast, O Lord. How priceless is your love, O God! your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. They feast upon the abundance of your house; you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light. Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, and your favor to those who are true of heart.
1 Corinthians 12:1-11 A reading from Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Sequence Song Awake My Soul How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes I struggle to find any truth in your lies And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know My weakness I feel I must finally show Lend me your hand and we'll conquer them all But lend me your heart and I'll just let you fall Lend me your eyes I can change what you see But your soul you must keep, totally free In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die And where you invest your love, you invest your life Awake my soul, Awake my soul For you were made to meet your maker
John 2:1-11 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon

If you prefer not to receive, we invite you to come forward for a blessing or to remain in your pew as you wish. Communion Song I Will Wait Well, I came home, Like a stone And I fell heavy into your arms These days of dust, Which we've known Will blow away with this new sun But I'll kneel down, Wait for now And I'll kneel down, Know my ground And I will wait, I will wait for you So break my step, And relent Well, you forgave and I won't forget Know what we've seen, And him with less Now in some way shake the excess 'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you Now I'll be bold, As well as strong And use my head alongside my heart So tame my flesh, And fix my eyes A tethered mind freed from the lies And I'll kneel down, Wait for now I'll kneel down, Know my ground Raise my hands, Paint my spirit gold And bow my head, Keep my heart slow 'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
