C OUNCIL 1098 ASSEMBLY 0224 N OVEMBER 2013 Knight News A Word From the Grand Knight S eptember and October were months of much activity for our council. On 9/24, we had 5 new members join our Council plus a transferred member. Our Financial Secretary will note their names in his section. On 9/29, our Council hosted the quarterly Chapter s meeting. Grand Knight Lawrence Ruder Faithful Navigator David Cruse Ladies Auxiliary President Nancy Diak Columbus Home President Walter Bruch Dates to Remember Nov. 13 First Degree Troy Council Nov. 15 Vocation Raffle Tickets Due Nov. 23 Granite City Santa Parade Dec. 7 Sparkles & Sweets (St. E) Our Annual Family picnic was held on 10/5. The weather was not good, but the gym was set up so the kids could have a good time and the food was great. I am sorry that more members did not come out to enjoy it. Thanks to Carl and Gert Petty and their kitchen crew, Mary Austin and the Columbus Home workers, Tribout for their donations, Mary Ryan and Keith Milton face painters, and the Holy Family 8th Grade volunteers. Congratulations to Elmer Long who was voted as trustee to take John Haug s term at the 10/8 meeting. On 10/18 & 10/19 we held our annual Tootsie Roll Drive for the Intellectually Disabled. While we collected about the same as last year, the amount of member participation was disappointing. I decided not to staff the Medicine Shop so we would have enough volunteers for the other places. About 40 members of our 500+ membership helped out. A big THANK YOU to those who did help, especially those who took multiple shifts, the wives, and the handful of non-members. What other Council provides donuts and lunch for doing about 2 hours of charity work? Our Council could easily get back to the amount that was collected a few years ago if we could get 20% participation. I wish I knew how to get more member participation in all our events or even to get members to read the newsletter. Vickie Haug does a great job listing the upcoming events on the front page and the calendar page in the newsletter. All ideas are welcomed but they need to be backed by the willingness to implement them. On 10/26 was the Chapter s Hall of Fame Dinner which our Council hosted. Thank you to the people who went out of their way to get Ads for the Souvenir Book. These Ads certainly will help to defray the cost of the event. Priesthood Sunday was on 10/27. I hope everyone thanked their parish priest for the work and sacrifices they do for our parishes. Our Council gave each a small monetary gift. The Vocation Raffle booklets are due 11/15. Reminder, do not tear off the cover. See GK News Continued on page 2...

KC Meeting Attendance/50-50 Winners & Losers September 24, 2013 Bob Pare won the 50/50 drawing and Joe Groboski failed to win the attendance drawing. October 8, 2013 Marty Thomason won the 50/50 drawing and John Demoulin failed to win the attendance drawing. GK News continued: Our Culture of Life Director, Roy Logan, reminds us that a group of people meet downtown at the abortion clinic every Saturday morning at 9:00 am to pray the rosary. It would be great to have a larger turnout to take a stand against abortions. Troy Council #9266 is having a 1st Degree on 11/13. The annual Granite City Santa s Holiday Parade is on 11/23. Joe Schuler has again volunteered to chair this event for our Council. Please help him with this Community event. Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner on 11/28. I wish everyone a blessed day. While we may have problems, we all have many things in which to be thankful. If you haven t been to a Council meeting in a while (or never), we want to invite you back to renew old acquaintances or make new ones. Winter is coming and can be a slow season in our busy lives. Come and join us on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM for the business meeting and the 4th Tuesday at 7:30 PM for the social meeting. Thanks to our Lector, Carl Petty, we have good food after the social meeting. Come and have an enjoyable night out with the guys. Due to lack of support, our Council will not be sponsoring the K of C Soccer Kick Contest or the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest for grade school kids. See you in Church, Larry Ruder

From the President of the Ladies Auxiliary T he month for Thanksgiving is here!! Are you thankful for everyday life? As an individual, we have our own thankfulness to express to the Lord. Please express it; YOU can do it. We had a very fast but productive meeting last month. We wanted to do our "Business" and get to the TV for the Cardinal Baseball Game. Cleo reported the few quilters we have are still quilting, working on projects for the Layette Baskets. We still need Ladies to help quilt! Don't let this precious ministry pass in history. Thank you to Gert Petty and all the Ladies who volunteered their TIME to help in the preparing, serving and cleanup of the Family Picnic. Thank you to our Sir Knights for providing the family gathering. SPARKLES AND SWEETS FUNDRAISER is December 7, 2013. Please bake 6 dozen cookies, breads or candies for the sale. If you have not brought in any sugar, corn syrup, or peanuts for the Peanut Brittle cooking, please do so. The more supplies we have, the less will come out of our treasury. Baskets will be raffled off so if you have any ideas for baskets, please contact Barb Lilley. Also, Cleo Schnefke has the Quilt Raffle tickets. Be sure to sell your tickets. Wreaths Across America Project was presented by Dorothy Jansen and is December 14. There is still time for this to be announced at next meeting. If you know someone of a Military Family who is buried at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, you may place a Christmas wreath on their grave. The Ladies voted to give DAR Wreaths cross America $150.00 for 10 wreaths for 10 graves. If anyone wishes to participate, we will finalize the information at November meeting. Laurie Mann from Springfield is the Ladies Auxiliary new state officer. Her title is now called the Auxiliary Liaison to the Knights. She will be at the Hall of Fame Dinner here October 26th. She has voiced her excitement to meet the Ladies from our Auxiliary. Congratulations to the Council s inductees George Friedel and Rudy Hoffek. Thank you, Ladies, who have been giving us GOOD refreshments at the meetings. Keep them coming! During the November meeting, we will vote on dispensing our monies for this year. Please discern on where you would like to see us give the monies. Voice your opinion. HAPPY THANKSGIVING Nancy Diak From the Financial Secretary C ongratulation to our five new members: Robert Hutson, Keith Melton, Anthony Ruesing, Samuel Ruesing, and Felix Urioste. We now have 505 members, 75 Honorary Life, and 13 Honorary members. By the time you receive this newsletter the ID (tootsie roll) drive will be over. I would like to thank everyone who worked and gave to this drive; we could not do it without you. In the following months I will be working on the dues for 2014. I would like to remind all members to let me know of any address and telephone number changes. Please take the time to notify me so you do not miss out on any Council 1098 news and events. If you have not received your "Vocation Raffle Tickets" yet, please pick them up at the club. If you have receive them turn them in as soon as possible. Richard Haack 931-5340
