ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea with questions or to help out.) Baptized today! Brandon Lane McFarland, Maisie Michael Cressy, Gael Uribe Ocampo Save the Date for VACATION BIBLE CAMP 2019: July 8-12 We are busy making baptismal robes. Do you sew? Please help us out. Save the Rosaries and Holy Cards you receive in the mail for children s ministry. Old Testament TOBIAH PREPARES FOR A TRIP Tobit 2: 11 6: 1 Tobit slept outside and his eyes were injured. He became blind, and also became unreasonable. Tobit s wife Anna had done some weaving for a neighbor who paid her with a little goat. Tobit accused her of stealing the goat! Even though she said she was innocent, he just wouldn t believe her. So it was a sad time for the family. Tobit suddenly remembered that he had left some money in trust with a cousin in another city. He told their son Tobiah to go to that city and ask for the money. He also hoped that Tobiah might find a wife among their relatives. Anna was very sad and worried that it might not be a safe trip. But Tobit reassured her that an angel from God will go with him. He didn t realize it, but Tobiah had met the Archangel Raphael out in the street, who was sent to go with him. New Testament INTRODUCING JOHN THE BAPTIST Luke 3: 21-22 & Luke 4: 1-13 John the Baptist was very surprised when Jesus came to him for baptism. He was surprised because Jesus had no need to be sorry for sins. Jesus was baptized to set an example for us. We follow in Jesus s footsteps whenever we participate in a Sacrament. After he came out of the water the Holy Spirit descended on him as a dove. Then a voice from heaven said, You are my beloved son. Immediately the Holy Spirit drove Jesus into the desert, where he did not eat or drink for 40 days. The devil tempted him three times. But unlike Adam and Eve, he resisted the temptations. Satan tempted Jesus with food (let these stones become bread); with power (worship me and receive all the kingdoms); and with trickery (throw yourself down and God will save you.) But Jesus conquered temptation, and angels came and served him. MY FAITH Love Our Neighbors The Catholic Church teaches that all human beings are connected, even the ones who live far apart or have different customs. In the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37) Jesus explains that anyone who needs our love and help is our neighbor. BIBLE BOOKS Joshua tells the story of the man who came to lead the Hebrews after Moses died. His name was Joshua, a form of the name Jesus. Joshua was a great leader. He trusted in God and was able to ask for many miracles. You may have heard the story of the sun standing still (10:13), or the River Jordan crossing (ch 3 & 4), or the Battle of Jericho (6: 1-27). Jesus makes it clear that it matters not how much one gives, but that it is planned, calculated, at least somewhat sacrificial (see Luke 24:1-4), and not simply from what is leftover at the end of the month. We propose the tithe (10%) as the ideal every family can consider working towards. This means taking steps to give 5% to one s parish, and 5% to other charities or causes you have personal passion for. You can register online at www.saintbrendan.org and click on the link Online Registration/New Parishioner on lower left corner of website and to give online, click on the Online Giving link. It s quick, secure, convenient, and easy. Your support helps sustain our parish. If you need help with online giving, please call the Parish Office at 425-483-9400. PAGE 7
